BASEBALL
Chris Edgar (North Penn) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs in Millersville’s 10-6 come-from-behind win over the University of the Sciences on Sunday. In Saturday’s 3-2 win in game one of a twinbill against West Chester, Edgar contributed an RBI single. Millersville won the second game by a 4-2 score to complete the sweep.
Shane Petrellis (Council Rock South) won his second game of the week with a strong seven-inning performance in La Salle’s 7-3 win over New York Tech on Sunday. The right handed hurler allowed three earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five. Kevin Christy (North Penn) came on in relief of Petrellis in the eighth and earned the six-out save, his first of the season. In game one of La Salle’s doubleheader sweep of Saint Peter’s on Saturday – a 7-6 win in 10 innings, Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) contributed four RBIs, which included a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning. In La Salle’s 3-2 win in game two, Adam Kammler (Pennridge) broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a bases-loaded walk.  In Friday’s 6-5 come-from-behind win over Manhattan, Gyles contributed a two-run single to left center to cap a six-run rally in the ninth inning. Kammler led off the rally in the game’s final frame with a walk. Zach Huff (Pennridge) worked three important innings of scoreless relief to keep the Explorers within striking distance and earned the win after working a scoreless and hitless ninth. In Tuesday’s 10-3 win over Coppin State, Petrellis pitched seven strong innings to earn the win, allowing just three hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out two. Gyles reached base safely all five times he stepped to the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
James Quigley (Bensalem) contributed three hits and three RBIs in Kutztown’s 4-3 win over East Stroudsburg in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday. Included in his three hits was an RBI double in the fourth that plated the go-ahead run as well as two-run homer in the first inning. ESU freshman Keith Moyer (Souderton) kept the Warriors within striking distance with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, striking out five and allowing just one hit. In Kutztown’s 7-2 loss to ESU in game two, Quigley contributed a double and RBI. He now has 41 doubles and 13 home runs in his career at KU.
Redshirt sophomore Andy Noga (Cheltenham) tossed a five-hitter, struck out eight and didn’t issue a walk for the first shutout of his career in East Stroudsburg’s 6-0 win over Kutztown in game two of a twinbill on Friday. ESU won game one 1-0 to sweep the doubleheader. Kutztown’s lineup came into the twinbill with a lineup that was hitting .358 and averaged more than 11 runs per game through its first 14 contests. East Stroudsburg remained at No. 3 in the NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll. In Noga’s first three starts, he boasted an 2.11 ERA with 16 strikeouts and three walks in 21.1 innings.
Nick Vitelli (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered an RBI triple that highlighted a four-run ninth inning in Penn State Berks 6-5 loss to Susquehanna University on Thursday. In Wednesday’s 8-3 loss to Kutztown, Vitelli contributed a single.
Alec Jacob (Pennsbury) threw 2.1 innings of relief in Lock Haven’s 8-2 loss to IUP in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday., striking out a pair of batters while allowing one run. Lock Haven won the second game 8-1.
Sophomore Matt Hone (Council Rock North) contributed a three-run double in a five-run uprising in the sixth inning of Widener’s 12-3 win over Lebanon Valley in game two of a twinbill on Saturday. Widener dropped the first game 2-1. In Widener’s 10-0 win over Lyndon State in game one of a twinbill, Hone contributed an RBI. Widener won the nightcap 15-0.
Will Erksine (North Penn) had a pair of hits and an RBI in Penn State-Abington’s 7-4 win over Swarthmore on Tuesday. Erksine scored a run and also had a stolen base.
Scott Runzer (Council Rock North) contributed a single in Bloomsburg’s 5-0 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday. Bloomsburg dropped a pair to the Raiders but came back to earn a split in Sunday’s rematch, falling 5-0 in game one but winning the second 4-1. Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) walked to lead off the sixth and stole second, eventually scoring.
Junior leftfielder Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) and senior first baseman Mike Knipe (Pennridge) each recorded three hits in Chestnut Hill’s split with Bloomfield College on Saturday. Chestnut Hill won game one 5-2 but fell in the second 4-3. In a four-run sixth inning in game one, junior centerfielder Eric Blood (Pennridge) ripped a one-out single, and Latchum followed with a base hit. A triple from Knipe plated a pair of runs. In game two, Knipe contributed an RBI double and later scored on a groundout by Blood.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) played his final collegiate game for Temple on Saturday in the Owls’ 71-64 double overtime loss to San Diego State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The senior forward recorded his 41st career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, finishing his career as Temple’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,158. Sophomore guard Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) added 14 points. In Thursday’s opening round dramatic 66-64 win over Penn State, Wyatt contributed 10 points off the bench while Allen pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. It was the eighth straight game the senior forward grabbed double-digit rebounds.
Cabrini senior forward Dom Farrello (William Tennent) was named to the D3Hoops.com Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team. Farrello helped lead the Cabrini men’s basketball team to its second straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) crown and to its second appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament ‘Sweet 16.’ Farrello finished his tenure with 1,256 career points, ranked seventh all-time. He also pulled down 565 career rebounds, finishing 13th all-time at Cabrini. Farrello scored 516 points in 2010-11, the third highest single-season total in program history. He earned CSAC First Team distinction and celebrated a banner season in 2010-11, averaging career highs in points (17.8 PPG), rebounds (8.0 RPG) and free throw percentage (.776). He recorded a team-high eight rebounds and scored in double figures in 27 of 29 games.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Swarthmore senior Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin) has been named a member of the 2011 WBCA/State Farm All-America Honorable Mention Team for Division III. The honor marks the third consecutive season that Stockbower has been named a member of the WBCA All-America Honorable Mention Team. This is Stockbower’s second All-America recognition of the year as she was named a Capital One/CoSida First Team Academic All-American in February. In the 2010-11 season, Stockbower led the Centennial Conference in rebounding average (12.4 RPG), finished fourth in scoring average (14.8 PPG), fifth in shooting percentage (48 percent) and 16th in the nation in rebounding average. With 83 career double-doubles, she is the all-time NCAA Division III leader, breaking the record with her 80th career double-double at Johns Hopkins on Feb. 5. She also became Swarthmore’s all-time leading rebounder against Muhlenberg on Feb. 2. Stockbower is one of only three players in Centennial Conference history to reach 1,500 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
FIELD HOCKEY
Lock Haven’s Casey Hughes (Souderton) earned a spot on the 2010 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Collegiate National Academic Division One squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2010-11 academic year. The Lady Eagles finished the year 15-7 overall and went 5-2 in conference play in their inaugural season in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
MEN’S GOLF
La Salle freshman golfer Michael Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. He carded a one-over par 73 in the team’s spring opener at Christopher Newport last Monday to earn medalist honors. Johnson also was named A-10 Rookie of the Week on Oct. 12. He averaged 77.0 strokes per round in the fall, good for second best on the team.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Shawn Caven (Pennsbury) had five groundballs in Ursinus College’s 11-9 come-from-behind win over Swarthmore on Saturday.
Freshman Kyle Andress (Central Bucks East) scored an unassisted goal in Penn State-Abington’s 16-2 loss to Misericordia on Saturday.
Sophomore Johnny Casey (Abington) scored a pair of first-half goals in Widener’s 9-8 loss to Dickinson on Saturday. Freshman Craig Hunsberger (Pennridge) won the face-off after Widener pulled to within one, but a turnover cost the Pride a chance to go for the tie.
Kevin Sonderschafe (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal and two assists in Chestnut Hill’s 19-0 win over Penn State-Abington Wednesday. Sophomore goalkeeper David Cutler (Pennsbury) combined with teammate Dakota Maurer for the shutout.
Sophomore midfielder Joe Hughes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored his first goal of the season in No. 15 Cabrini’s 9-8 overtime loss to No. 18 Gettysburg on Wednesday.
Freshman attackman Garrett Rosiek (Wissahickon) contributed one goal and four assists in Aurora's 16-7 win over Randolph College. It was just the third game in the program's first season of NCAA competition, and it was the team's first win of the season. Rosiek shares the team lead  in scoring with four goals and five assists.
Sophomore Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) contributed four goals and an assist in Messiah College's 15-12 win over York College. For the season, Kupecky is second on the team with seven goals and six assists.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Lauren McDermott (North Penn) scored a pair of goals and contributed a pair of assists in La Salle’s 13-8 win over Monmouth on Wednesday.
Kelsey Schmoltze (Upper Moreland) contributed the hat trick in Millersville’s 11-10 loss to IUP on Saturday. Goalie Courtney Haggerty (Hatboro-Horsham) was credited with 10 saves and two groundballs.
Jen Dunne (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in Kutztown’s 14-6 loss to East Stroudsburg on Saturday afternoon. On Thursday, Dunne, playing her first game of the season, scored an insurance goal in Kutztown’s come-from-behind 12-10 overtime win over Philadelphia University. Justine Simonsen (Upper Moreland) is the captain of Kutztown’s squad.
Senior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) scored three goals in East Stroudsburg’s 14-6 win over Kutztown. Sophomore Ali Green (North Penn) added a single goal. In ESU’s 12-6 loss to No. 6 West Chester on Tuesday, Mangiaruga contributed a goal.
Freshman Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) scored a pair of goals in Bloomsburg’s 12-4 win over Kutztown on Tuesday. Emily Savini (Neshaminy) was credited with three groundballs for Kutztown while Leann Pica (Neshaminy) and Simonsen both had one groundball.
Freshman Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) has started three out of five games for Syracuse. She scored her first career goal in Syracuse’s 11-10 loss to Stanford. She scored single goals in both Syracuse’s 21-11 loss to Virginia and the Orange’s 11-5 win over Towson.
Senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) scored two goals in Ursinus College’s 15-11 win over Swarthmore on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 19-3 win over Cabrini, Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) scored three goals while Jackie Kimmel (Hatboro-Horsham) was credited with four groundballs. Freshman midfielder Kellie Manoppello (Upper Merion) scored a goal for Cabrini.
Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) contributed a goal in #4 Lock Haven’s big 17-11 win over #2 C.W. Post on Sunday. With the win, Lock Haven improved to 5-0 on the season.
Freshman Emily Maher (Pennridge) scored a goal in American University’s 15-12 loss to Colgate in its Patriot League road opener on Saturday.
Senior Mary Dean (Cheltenham) contributed a goal and three assists in Penn State’s 11-8 upset win over No. 12 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon. The win – the Nittany Lions’ third straight – brought a halt to their four-game losing streak to the Commodores and catapulted them to the top of the early-season American Lacrosse Conference standings.
Colleen Dellostretto (Hatboro-Horsham) and Lauren Smyth (Council Rock South) each contributed two goals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 17-0 rout of Rosemont on Saturday. In Thursday’s 17-2 non-league win over Penn State-Abington, Jenna D’Arcy (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a pair of goals while Dellostretto added a single goal.
Kelly McKay (Pennridge) contributed a goal in Chestnut Hill’s 21-10 loss to Malloy on Saturday.
Sophomore Alex Taratuski (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed six points in Widener’s 18-5 Middle Atlantic Conference win over King’s on Saturday.
SOFTBALL
Millersville sophomore Alicia Hughes (Quakertown) was recognized by the PSAC as its Eastern Division Pitcher of the Week last Tuesday. The southpaw won four straight starts to help the Marauders improve to 6-5 before heading home from Clermont, Fla. Hughes (5-2) began the season winning just one of three decisions before finding her groove against Southern New Hampshire in a 10-0 complete game shutout that ended in five innings. In her last four starts, she pitched two shutouts, both of which ended in five innings. Hughes totaled 17 strikeouts – leading the team with 30 on the season – without surrendering a walk last week. She had an ERA of 2.62, giving up just seven total earned runs on seven hits in 24 innings of work.
Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) and Beth Everist (North Penn) each knocked in a pair of runs in a six-run second inning to lift Mount St. Mary’s past North Carolina Central 8-4 in the Demarini Capital Classic on Saturday. Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) picked up the win on the mound, striking out six. Everist moved into sixth place in program history for career RBIs (70) while Zingle jumped into seventh place in RBIs (67) and fourth place in at-bats (466). Sadowl moved into ninth place for strikeouts (120). Delaware State defeated the Mount in eight innings in the nightcap. In Thursday’s 1-0 win over Coppin State in the opener of a doubleheader, Zingle knocked in the lone run for the Mount. In the Mount’s 4-3 loss to Coppin in the nightcap, Zingle added a hit and run scored. Everist went 2-for-3  - which included a double - with two RBIs in the second game.
Sophomore Deanna Dungee (North Penn) was named the Pitcher of the Week by the Commonwealth Conference it was announced last Tuesday. Dungee started the week with a shutout over Northwestern and followed that up by allowing just one run as she came in mid-game against Finlandia. Dungee is 1-0 on the season with just one earned run through 10 innings, good for a 0.70 ERA, which is second in the conference.
Junior Samantha Schoell (North Penn) contributed a pair of doubles in Temple’s 10-5 win over Dayton in the second game of a twinbill on Sunday. Dayton won the first game 13-4.
Junior third baseman Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a two-run single in East Stroudsburg’s 9-3 win over Alderson-Broaddus on Friday.
Sophomore Tegan Wendell (Abington) had one of her team’s two hits – a double in the second – in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 14-1 loss to Moravian on Saturday. Freshman Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) contributed an RBI groundout. In Gwynedd’s 8-0 win over Notre Dame on Friday in game one of a twinbill, Farrar contributed a two-run home run. In Gwynedd’s 9-3 win in game two, freshman Renee Stiteler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI double.
Deann Schneiderriet (William Tennent) delivered a double and scored a run in Millersville 6-4 loss to Fairmont State on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 5-4 loss to Georgian Court, Schneiderriet contributed an RBI single.
Senior Erin Holloway (Souderton) allowed just two hits in IUP’s 10-2 five-inning win over Fairmont State in the finale of the Salem Tournament on Sunday. She struck out seven and walked two in the abbreviated game and upped her record to 9-1 on the season. Teammate Dee Eppinger (North Penn) contributed a two-run single in a five-run uprising in the fourth inning. In Saturday’s 11-5 win over Glenville State in the Salem Tournament, Eppinger capped a seven-run first inning with a two-out grand slam, her first home run of the year. In IUP’s 12-4 win in six innings over Wheeling Jesuit later in the day on Saturday, freshman Mary Ward (North Penn) delivered a grand slam to invoke the eight-run rule to end the game in the sixth inning. Holloway benefitted from the offensive explosion, earning the win in the circle. The senior mound ace allowed four earned runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking none. IUP opened the Salem Tournament with a pair of wins on Friday – 7-0 over West Virginia State and 4-2 over Charleston in the nightcap. In the win over Charleston, Holloway earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings while striking out 11.
TRACK & FIELD
Millersville sent three members to compete in the multi-events at the 49er Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina – Charlotte. Jess Rhyner (Quakertown) finished sixth in the heptathlon while Zach Kohler (Pennridge) placed seventh in the decathlon. Rhyner scored a total of 3,611 points. She earned a PSAC qualifier in the high jump reaching a distance of 1.59 meters. Rhyner took first place in the event, racking up 724 points – her best event of the competition. Kohler’s best event of the day was the high jump where he took fourth place, reaching 1.89 meters – just shy of a PSAC qualifier (1.90 meters).
