Council Rock South senior goaltender Steve Jastrow weathered a barrage of nine Central Bucks East shots in the first three minutes of the game, and his magnificent effort sparked the Golden Hawks to a 5-2 victory over the Patriots to capture the 2011 Class AA Flyers Cup. The game was played before a sellout crowd of exactly 653 fans at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center in Warminster.
Jastrow – who was the starting goalie for the Rock South junior varsity team a year ago – left with an armful of awards for his remarkable 31-save outing. He was voted the # 1 star of the game – was voted to the all-tournament team – and was voted Most Valuable Player in the Flyers Cup finals.
“I had no idea that I would be leaving with all this stuff,” smiled Jastrow. “My focus was just on what I had to do to help the team win the game. Winning the Flyers Cup is amazing, but we aren’t done yet.”
Council Rock South will meet the winner of the Penguins Cup on Saturday for the Pennsylvania State Championship Trophy. The game will be played at the Ice Line Rink in West Chester with a 1:30 pm face-off.
CB East – the Suburban High School Hockey League champion – came out firing as it peppered Jastrow in the opening minutes of the game. But the Patriots failed to score on that initial nine-shot surge, and on the very first shot by CR South – the Golden Hawks took a 1-0 lead.
“Central Bucks East does a lot of run-and-gun stuff on offense,” said Council Rock South head coach Joe Houk. “They had some point blank shots on Steve, and I’m still not sure how he was able to stop them.”
“We needed to score a goal or two there,” said Central Bucks East head coach Ken Latchum. “But give (Jastrow) credit. He played the way a goalie has to play if you want to win in the playoffs.”
The first Hawk shot found the back of the Patriot net with 11:32 left in the first period. Colin Craige scored the even strength goal on assists from both Greg Aquaro and Steve Junod.
CB East, though, did solve the Jastrow puzzle in the first period. The Patriots scored a power play goal with only 27 seconds left in the period. The goal scorer for East was Michael Palmer on assists from Vince Esposito and Nick Patullo.
Council Rock South scored two second period goals to snatch a 3-1 lead. Mitchell Vaysman scored on assists from Tom Kozior and Tom Kopania at 10:22, while Aquaro scored on assists from Craige and Junod at 2:08.
Rock South appeared to put the game out of reach at 10:23 of the third period as Kozior scored on assists from Junod and Zack Goodman as the Hawks led 4-1. But East countered on a goal by Austin Cinalli at 10:13 on assists from John Esposito and Tom Schloendorn to slice the lead to 4-2.
The final goal of the game was scored by Rock South’s Kyle Walter into an open net with 38 seconds left in the contest.
Goodman – who excelled on the defensive end of the night all night for the Hawks – was also selected to the all-tournament team.
“We had a lot to prove in this game,” said Goodman. “CB East won the league playoffs, and we wanted to come out and play well. I thought we came together very well tonight.
“We won the Flyers Cup, but we still have work to do,” added Goodman. “Every game is important, and we want to win that game on Saturday.”
The state title game is staring Rock South in the face – but for the Patriots the Flyers Cup finals will be their final game of the season. And some of the Patriots, it marks the end of their respective careers.
“This is a tough way to see our season and our careers to end,” said Central Bucks East senior Austin Cinalli. “It was great to make it this far, but we would have liked to have gone one game more.
“We just didn’t bury the shots we needed,” added Cinalli – who was also voted to the all-tournament team. “They were a little better than us tonight, and they had the hot goalie.”
And that scorching hot goalie was Steve Jastrow.
Ice Chips:
