Council Rock South will showcase a terrific trio of seniors as the Golden Hawks attempt to capture the Class AA Pennsylvania State Championship game this Saturday. Goaltender Steve Jastrow, defenseman Zack Goodman, and center Patrick Grilli will all pull over the CR South sweater for the last time in their scholastic careers.
Council Rock South – the Flyers Cup champion – will challenge Bishop Canevin – the Penguins Cup champion – and the winner will hoist the state title trophy at the Ice Line Rink in West Chester.
Spotlight on Steve Jastrow:
Back of the bubble gum card:
Height – 5-foot, 8-inches; Weight – 130 pounds; Date of birth – October 10, 1992
Flyers Cup Stats – Record – 4-0; Saves 105; Save Percentage – 92.2%; Goals Against – 2.00.
Steve Jastrow was the junior varsity goalie for the Golden Hawks last season as a junior.
“There was a chance at the beginning of the season that Steven might not play for us this year,” said Council Rock South head coach Joe Houk. “The toughest thing about being a goaltender is that you can only play one at a time. There are no shifts for goaltenders, and Steven’s time wasn’t going to come until this year.
“He is a very technical goaltender,” added Houk. “Steven is a great leader, a hard worker, and always sets a great example for the rest of the team.”
“To be able to play for a state championship is where we want to be,” said Jastrow who was voted as the Most Valuable Player in the Golden Hawks 5-2 victory over Central Bucks East in the Flyers Cup title game. “We have very high standards of play at South, and I just wanted to live up to those standards.”
Spotlight on Zack Goodman:
Back of the bubble gum card:
Height – 5-foot, 10-inches; Weight – 175 pounds; Date of birth – October 24, 1992
SHSHL & Flyers Cup Stats – 23 games; seven goals; 22 assists; 29 total points.
Zack Goodman almost looks like a point guard in basketball as he distributes the puck and covers the ice in a blink on an eye.
“Zack is a big game changer for us,” said Houk. “He can change the tempo of an entire game with one shift, and a huge part of his game is that he is such a great skater.
“To have a defenseman like him is a tremendous plus,” added Houk. “He can carry the puck from the defensive end of the ice to the offensive end and get off a great shot.”
“Playing in the state title game is going to be a lot of fun,” said Goodman who will play lacrosse at Gwynedd-Mercy College next year. “We really have no idea what style of game they play, and that actually makes it more fun.
“It is hard to believe that I am a senior, and that this game will be the last hockey game I play for South,” added Goodman. “This has been a great team to be on, and we have become very close.”
Spotlight on Patrick Grilli:
Back of the bubble gum card:
Height – 5-foot, 8 inches; Weight – 175 pounds; Date of birth – July 18, 1992.
SHSHL & Flyers Cup Stats – 30 games; 46 goals; 32 assists; 76 points.
Patrick Grilli was on the ice for the 2009-2010 Rock South team that lost to Latrobe in the state final.
“This (state championship) game means more to me because we lost to the western team my sophomore season,” said Grilli. “It is a great feeling to be the Flyers Cup champion for two of the last three years, but we really want to be state champions as well.
“My high school years have gone by really fast, and it is surprising that this is going to be my last high school hockey game,” added Grilli who is leaning toward playing ice hockey on the college level at Rider University. “It would be great to end the season with a win in a state championship game.”
“My coaches and I say all the time that Patrick Grilli is a warrior,” said Houk. “He is such a great competitor and sometimes he just gets angry on the ice. We play him on the power play and the penalty kills – he is just a great high school hockey player.”
Council Rock South head coach Joe Houk says:
“This is a hockey team that is ready for the big time, and we will play well in the finals,” said Houk. “We have great senior leadership in Grilli, Goodman, and Jastrow – and we have a team that is very deep and will contribute every shift on the ice.
“The whole experience of playing in this state championship game is great,” added Houk. “They treat us really well, and the kids will always remember this weekend. It is a great way to end the season – especially for the seniors who will be playing their last game in this program.”
