On Feb. 15, 2011, Souderton senior Alex Atiyeh was honored at a special news conference for signing a letter of intent to play field hockey at Drexel University.
Alex Atiyeh – Drexel University (Field Hockey)
Major: Environmental Engineering
Final list of colleges: Drexel, Lafayette, Lehigh, William & Mary, American
Reasons for choosing Drexel: “I chose Drexel because it has a really strong engineering program. It not only has D-1 athletics, but it also has a really strong academic program.”
When did the idea of playing collegiate field hockey start to become a reality? “It was probably during my freshman and sophomore years, especially going to the National Festival and playing on club teams – I started deciding what kind of school I wanted to go to, and I started contacting coaches.
“It’s very exciting. I can’t wait. I was ready to pack my bags back when I committed. I already met the entire team and the coaches – it’s going to be a great time.”
Souderton coach Mary Ann Harris says: “As a hockey player and a student, Alex works very hard to achieve success. In field hockey, she worked hard – in addition to playing Souderton hockey, she went to all the extra clinics and did all the things she could do to improve her game. She was very good about absorbing the information she learned and adding it to her game.
“Alex realized how important it is to be in condition, and conditioning was another thing she really improved upon to achieve her goals of going to a good university that had what she wanted academically, and she could also play field hockey at a high level.
“Alex is competitive, and she doesn’t give up. If she doesn’t perform to a satisfactory level to herself and to her team, she tries to improve upon it always.”
