If the Eagles needed a boost in the season’s early weeks, they got it on Monday when – sparked by the four-goal efforts of Precious Evans and Beverly Pate as well as the hat trick from Charmaze Banks – they earned their first win of the season.
“Today was huge,” coach Michelle McLoughlin said. “It was our first league win. We had a pretty rough week both on and off the field for various reasons last week, and to be able to come out today and win was such a moral victory for the girls.
“It really came down to teamwork. They were passing the ball a lot better than they had so far this year, and we had a lot more assists, which was huge because it showed how much they were working together today.”
Janelle Scruggs added a pair of goals while Amelia Schunder (one assist) and Morgan Heist both scored single goals for the Eagles, who led 8-5 at halftime.
“Beverly Pate is our leading scorer so far, and she did well,” McLoughlin said. “We had quite a few people scoring today, and we were really able to spread it out.
“Precious, who is ridiculously fast, was able to score a couple of quick goals to keep our momentum going.”
The win was McLoughlin’s first since taking over the helm. She is hardly a stranger to the program since she has been with the Eagles for three years as an assistant.
“That’s the longest time somebody has been with these girls for a little while,” the first-year coach said. “They did wonderful today, and for them to feel comfortable enough to play as well as they are capable of playing is huge for them.
“It was definitely an exciting win for us. We’re finally getting over the past few years where we are starting to get some real consistency. Today was a great day.”
Amie Adame turned away 11 shots in goal for the Eagles while Upper Moreland’s Emma Joyce was credited with nine saves.
Kathryn Brunner led the Golden Bears with three goals and one assist. Maddie Mauro, Chelsea Mills, Amanda Nowell and Alexa Schuck each scored two goals while Brandi Weaver had one goal and one assist.
While the Eagles improved to 1-2 in league play, the Golden Bears fell to 0-2 in the league (0-3 overall).
Central Bucks West 11, Central Bucks East 9
Jane Savard led a balanced West attack, contributing three goals and one assist in the Bucks’ win over their neighboring rivals. Elena Romesburg, Tara Shugars (one assist) and Amanda Parker each added a pair of goals while both Jess Circuit and Steph Cooper scored singled goals.
“It was an intense game, especially in the second half,” West coach Tara Schmucker said. “We dominated the draws and offense in the first half.
“Jan Savarad had a tremendous game offensively, and her speed helped to gain some fast break leads. Tara Shugars and Amanda Parker also helped lead the attack and provide some crucial goals.”
In addition scoring three goals, Savard also had three draw controls and four groundballs as well as one caused turnover. Sammie Hogan had 10 saves in goal for the Bucks.
“Sammie kept us in the lead in the second half with four awesome saves,” Schmucker said. “East came back in the second half, and (Carolyn) Remmey and (Jamie) Burns were big threats and helped pull East to within two at the end of the second half.”
According to Schmucker, the Bucks’ inexperience and some unforced turnovers helped allow East to stay in the game.
“Trish Kilgannon and Christy Grezesak came up with some vital groundballs and caused turnovers, and Elena Romesburg’s last draw control clinched the game for us,” Schmucker said.
Burns led the Patriots with four goals while Remmey added two goals and two assists.

The Golden Hawks earned a much-needed win on Monday, exploding for 10 second-half goals to turn a 6-2 halftime lead into the lopsided win.
“Coming off last week was a little bit tough for us – we had that (14-6) loss to West Chester East, which was just kind of a whole mess of a day,” coach Erica Heller said. “Standing out four hours in the rain doesn’t make it any easier.
“One of the things we worked on at the end of last week at practice was really trying to work together as a team, and I was very, very happy with today’s win. Not only did individual players step up and score goals, but it was a great team win.”
Becca Cocco led a balanced attack with four goals while Alexis Vanderslice, Gabi Rosenfeld (one assist) and Jamie Damirgian each added the hat trick. Damirgian also had two assists. Christine Besselman had a pair of goals and Meg Sheehy added a single goal.
Alanna Cochrane had a pair of assists while Devin Cochrane and Cara Deola each had one assist.
“We had five goals scoring one of more goals, and any girl that didn’t score that’s part of our attack was assisting a goal,” Heller said. “As a coach, that’s something I definitely want to see out of our attack. It was definitely a great team effort today.”
The win was the first of the season for the Golden Hawks, who suffered a tightly-contested loss to Central Bucks West to open the season.
“It’s always tough in the beginning of the season because you’re working out who’s going to play what position,” Heller said. “We have a couple of freshmen that have never played at the high school level before who have really stepped up, and we have found a spot for them on this varsity team where they are 100 percent making an impact.
“I think since last week we have really found a way for the team to be working together. Last week it was a lot of individual players stepping up. Today we were finding people and feeding the ball to them, the girls were setting up plays, and coming off those two losses – out of that confusion, there’s communication. They’re connecting on passes. There are plays that are being run and executed successfully.”
Heller acknowledged the solid showing of several players.
“One of our freshmen, Gabi Rosenfeld, scored three goals for us today, and she’s been stepping up for us,” the first-year coach said. “She’s consistently a hard worker on the field.
“Christine Besselman had two goals. One of the reasons I’m singling her out is - she got a little frustrated. Villa’s defense was really coming down hard on her, and she took a couple of tumbles, and they had a couple of great checks. You wouldn’t see it necessarily in the box score, but she made such a difference in other parts of the field – getting groundballs, going for interceptions and really not taking herself out of the game by getting frustrated by not being able to score in the first part of the game. She came back and scored two beautiful goals in the last 15 minutes.”
In goal, Rock South’s Taylor Hurwitz turned away 10 shots in a strong outing.
Council Rock North 11, Archbishop Wood 2
Lindsey Rheiner scored five goals and also contributed an assist while Kara Magley and Becky Ely each had two goals. Magley also had an assist while Ely had a pair. Jackie Strange also had a goal and an assist. Rock North’s final goal came on an own goal by Wood.
“We were able to shut them out in the second half, which was a surprise,” said coach Pat Toner, whose team led 7-2 at the intermission. “They have Caitlin McCartney and Alyssa Andress, who are very strong players and big scorers, and we were concerned that we were going to have a hard time, especially being down two players.
“Their goalie (Emily Hutson) made some great saves, but we were able to move her and score. We were looking to control the draw and ground balls, and we were able to do that today.”
McCarney scored both of Wood’s goals while Andress only managed an assist.
Toner went on to laud the efforts of Rheiner as well as her entire defensive unit comprised of Ely, Magley, Rheiner, Bridget Doyle, Kara Le, Nora Simcox, Caitlin Hannagen and Beck.
“Lindsey Rheiner had a great game today,” Toner said. “She played very well. When she gets in a groove, she’s very difficult to stop.
“Our entire defense played well. I was really proud of our defense. Caitlin Hannagen never played lacrosse before, and she is doing a fantastic job. She definitely understands how to mark.”
The Indians are 2-2 overall.

The Titans threw a scare into the Maidens, jumping out to a 6-3 first-half lead. The Maidens rallied to knot the score by halftime and then outscored the Titans 4-2 in the second half to earn the win.
“It was a Monday, and we didn’t come out ready to play, and I think that was the bottom line,” Maiden coach Jami Wilus said. “Plus I always think you’re never as good as you think, and you’re probably never as bad as you think.
“Today we came out very flat. We had the loss of a weekend in terms of practice time, and we were rusty and real unmotivated at the beginning of the game. I think we’re bringing it together, and the girls were able to come back from 6-3 when things weren’t really going our way.”
Senior Macie Hauck and Brenda McDermott led the Maidens with three goals each. McDermott also had two assists. Maddy Humphrey, Garrie Grenfell, Kaitlin Suzuki and Rachel Shaw (one assist) each scored single goals.
“We’re still striving to find who the vocal leader is on the field and who’s going to step up in those critical situations,” Wilus said. “That’s something we definitely need to work on as a team.
“We have – for a couple of years – had some forceful, vocal seniors, and we have a new group this year where I think a lot of them are looking around at each other to see who is going to step up. I have faith and confidence that we’ll get there. It’s just taking a little bit longer.
“We’re 5-0, so you can’t complain about too much. We’re still winning games, and I don’t think we’re playing our best lacrosse yet. A win is a win. We just need to keep getting better every day. If we were playing our best lacrosse now, I’d probably be a little worried.”
The Maidens took 26 shots to just 16 for the Titans, but Titan goalie Leslie Searles turned away 13 shots.
“It just didn’t look like we were ready to play at the beginning of the game,” Wilus said. “Once the 6-3 set in, we started to come back.
“We really held the ball for the last 10 minutes, and they didn’t come out to play us, so we didn’t try to score for the last 10 minutes of the game.”
The Titans received a pair of goals from Kristen Lawlor, Kelly Hamilton (one assist) and Casey Haegele (one assist). Kayla Kenney (one assist) and Taylor Michener (two assists) both added single goals.
“We came in with a plan, and the girls executed it very well,” South coach Janique Craig said. “We hope to continue to improve and develop as a team.”
Although the Titans lost, it was as close as they have ever come to the perennial SOL power.
Neshaminy 13, Archbishop Ryan 9
Caitlin Carrezola turned in a monster performance to lead the Redskins to the big win. The senior captain contributed six goals, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. She also had eight groundballs, two draw controls and one turnover.
Teammate Kimber Kisselback added four goals to go along with four groundballs and one draw control.
“She’s a rookie to the game,” coach Gina Quaranta said of Kisselback. “We had a few people who were able to play out of position who were really strong for us today.
Sam Kerr added one goal, three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Nicole Bellus and Rachel Rotteveel each scored a single goal while Emily Hegner had an assist.
Francis Gentry turned away six shots in goal.
“She is very strong as a defensive leader and helps keep us in games,” Quaranta said. “Today she only had six saves, but every time she makes a good save I feel as though that really pushes our defense all the way up to our attack in a positive direction. They get a confidence boost after a really good save.”
The win came on the heels of three tough losses to Germantown Academy, Downingtown West and Nazareth.
“They were all really tough games,” Quaranta said. “It just is important to me that we keep consistency in the game plan and the game we’re trying to play.
“Today we were able to be consistent and get the right passes off and use what Archbishop Ryan was giving us today to be successful.”
The win upped the Redskins to 2-3 on the young season.
Hatboro-Horsham 19, Pennridge 9
Junior Cortnee Daly contributed six goals and an assist on a day that saw nine Hatters contribute goals. Lizzy Carr, Nicole Beck (one assist), Rachel Rauza, Annett Dedisipio each added two goals. Goalie Jackie Giovinazzo turned away nine shots for the Hatters, who took a 10-3 lead into halftime.
Upper Merion 19, Cheltenham 10

In goal, Ally Frymoyer turned away 17 shots for the Vikings, who improved to 2-1 in league play (3-1 overall).
Abington 9, Springfield (Montco) 8 (OT)
