The Colonials served notice in Monday’s 9-7 loss to Wissahickon that they might be turning things around after a tough initial go-round in conference play. On Wednesday, they picked up where they left off against the Trojans and, behind the five-goal effort of senior Hannah Heritage, sprinted to a 6-1 halftime lead on their way to the big win.
“I’m glad they came out with a win because they’re trying to work hard and improve and become more consistent,” coach Ellen Reilly said. “On Monday when we played Wissahickon, I thought my kids came together, and we had a really good game. Even though we lost, we could have won.
“We’re working the ball down the field more, and it’s because they’re playing together as a team, looking for their teammates and not running the ball down.”
Reilly went on to laud the efforts of several of her players.
“Hannah Heritage worked really hard against Wissahickon,” the PW coach said. “She started taking some of our draws, and she’s going both ends of the field for us now. She works hard all the time.
“Mollie Getzfread is all over the field. She needs to learn how to control her speed – she’s sometimes too fast for her own good, but she’s all over that field, helping double on someone or surprising someone from the back and getting the ball because of her speed. Today, even though she had one goal, she still had two assists, and she had loads of groundballs.”
In addition to Heritage – who also had four draw controls - and Getzfread, Jenna Kalman and Charlotte Cornog both contributed the hat trick. Dani Rosenberg, Sarah Naylor, Sami Heller and Meg Messmer each had one goal.
“After Wissahickon, they said, ‘We played well today,’ like maybe that was okay,” Reilly said. “I said, ‘Yes, you did play well, and we should celebrate that, but to be really good, you shouldn’t be satisfied with that. You need to want to win, and you had the opportunities.’
“Hopefully, they will get that competitive attitude, and it will start showing. We have a lot of games left.”
Nikol Grandinetti and Maddie Mauro each scored for the Golden Bears while Alexa Schuck contributed an assist. Emma Joyce turned away seven shots for the Golden Bears, and PW’s Jordan Dunacusky had five saves.
