Abington 12, Council Rock South 1 (5 innings)
The Ghosts won their first game on the season on Friday, and they won it in impressive fashion, downing the Golden Hawks in a contest that was halted in the fifth inning when the mercy rule went into effect. The win brought to an end a string of 12 straight games without a win for the Ghosts.
“Oh my goodness, I think it was breaking everybody,” coach Ellie White said. “The kids stay up, and they work so hard at practice because I’m not going let them be satisfied with just competing in games. I want to win.
“It’s so nice to let them have that. They deserve it. It’s been really hard, and just to see them happy is worth it.”
The win came a week after the Ghosts saw a 6-0 lead slip away in a heartbreaking 9-8 loss to Harry S. Truman.
“After the Truman loss, they were ready to get right back on the horse again and try and win,” White said. “To be honest, I think the kids were just ready to win.”
The Ghosts came out of the gate on fire, scoring five runs in the first inning, three more in the second and four in the fourth. The Golden Hawks plated their lone run in the first inning.
“Kelly Lyons finally got her win, which is nice,” White said of her senior hurler.
Lyons also contributed a double and scored two runs. Emily McKay led the Ghosts with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate. She scored one run and contributed two RBIs. Emily Willard singled, walked twice and scored two runs. Angie LaMaina was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
“When you’re losing softball game after softball game, it starts to beat you, but you have to go to work every day,” White said. “That’s what we did. We kept pursuing what we wanted to go after. We wanted a win, and it finally happened today.”
