SOL Baseball Wrap (5-3-11)

The battle for first place in the Suburban One League National Conference wasn’t much of a fracas at all as host Council Rock North (8-1) routed Truman (7-3) – 10-0.

Rock North avenged its only conference loss of the season with the victory. The Tigers defeated the Indians 9-7 in the first meeting this season.

“There was a little bit about us wanting to beat them, but we pretty much focused on what we had to do to win the game,” said Council Rock North head coach Matt Schram. “We respect that team in the other dugout, and we really put it all together today.

“This was by far the cleanest game that we have played all season – fielding, pitching, and hitting,” added Schram. “We had 13 hits, Pat O’Leary threw a great game, and we didn’t have an error and turned three double plays.”

O’Leary – who has not allowed a single run all season in 25 innings of work – had seven strikeouts in the five-inning ‘mercy-rule’ game.

“Pat is one of three very good pitchers that we have going,” said Schram in reference to O’Leary, Darren Lauer, and Jake Drossner. “I would put anyone of them out there in an important game.”

A pair of homeruns fueled the Indian offense as seniors Dan Denton and Ryan Henritzy went yard. It was Denton’s second homer in as many days.

“We haven’t hit the ball the way I thought we would,” said Schram. “Maybe Dan will be the trigger to our offense.”

Senior Mike Festa collected three hits and three RBI while senior Ryan Hartley doubled. Junior Phil Marks roped a triple for the winners.

“This was a nice win, but now we have to get ready for both Pennsbury on Thursday and Abington on Friday,” said Schram. “We have to remain focused.”

Council Rock South (8-2) moved into second place in the conference standings as the Golden Hawks scored eight runs in the fifth inning and soared to a 19-1 victory over host Neshaminy (4-7). The game was called after five innings due to the ‘mercy-rule’.

“We hit the baseball, threw the baseball, and played solid defense,” said Council Rock South head coach Greg Young. “Zack Fitzgerald had a great day at the plate, and he has had a great year moving from the number eight spot in the order to the number two spot between Billy (Fleming) and JT (Justin Thomas).”

Fitzgerald collected three hits and had four RBI for the Hawks. Junior Jeff Miller smoked a double and a homerun to highlight a 17-hit Rock South attack. It was the first career homerun for Miller.

Bret DeStefano threw a complete game to register the win. DeStefano struck out four hitters in the five innings that he worked.

“Whenever Bret takes the ball we know we’re going to be in the ballgame,” said Young. “It was great to get the win in five innings. It will save him pitches down the road.”

Pennsbury (4-6) received a ‘walk-off’ homer off the bat of Phil Herring in the sixth inning as the Falcons flew to an 11-1 ‘mercy-rule’ victory over visiting Abington (3-6).

“We hit the ball well today,” said Pennsbury head coach Joe Pesci. “We put together four singles, a double, a walk, and a hit batter to score the six runs in the fifth inning to break the game open. Chris Romano had a big double in that inning.”

Zack Yencha threw a complete game for the Falcons. He yielded just six hits and had four strikeouts. Yencha is now an impressive 4-1 for the season.

“Paul Gosselin will get the ball for us against Council Rock North on Thursday,” said Pesci. “Playing them is always a great challenge.”

Bensalem (4-6) pounded out eight runs and eight hits in the first three innings as the Owls soared to a 9-0 victory over visiting William Tennent (1-8). The Panthers had beaten Bensalem 4-2 yesterday for their first conference win.

“We both have two very young teams,” said Bensalem head coach Rick Lee. “Down the line, both Tennent and us will be able to compete with both the Council Rocks and Truman. This is such a good league.”

Bensalem collected 14 hits for the game. Junior Zack Hizer had two doubles and three RBI, Frank Primavera had two hits and an RBI, Zack Schwartz had two hits, Jessie Dannon had two hits and an RBI, and Eric Rudd had two hits and an RBI.

Rudd was the winning pitcher for Bensalem with a strong six-inning stint. He had five strikeouts and permitted just two hits.

“Eric threw well, very well,” said Lee. “He was around the plate and made them put the ball in play.”

Central Bucks East (4-5) punished first place Pennridge (8-2) by a 10-1 margin behind a nifty four-hitter thrown by Kris Davis.

“Kris pitched a lights-out baseball game,” said Central Bucks East head coach Kyle Dennis. “He challenged the hitters the entire game, and he pitched to contact. And we made the plays behind him defensively.”

Davis threw a complete game performance and allowed just a single unearned run.

Senior Ryan Pater handled the offensive load for the winners with a four-hit, three RBI day. Pater crushed a homerun and also smacked a double. Sean Trymbiski had three hits for the Patriots and matched Pater with a homerun.

“Ryan and Sean hit back-to-back homers and had great days at the plate,” said Dennis. “We have not been as aggressive at the plate as I want us to be, and both of them will help get us going in the right direction.”

“It was a nice win for us, and we really hit the ball well,” said Central Bucks South head coach Mike Schaefer. “Brian Happ had a great day for us, and we really hit the ball up and down the lineup.”

Happ finished the game with four hits that included a double and three RBI. Junior Dylan Glassmire had two hits and three RBI, while junior Chris Coia had two hits and was on base four times. Junior Kyle Lewis had a two-run double for the Titans.

Central Bucks West (5-4) moved to over .500 in the conference with a 4-1 victory over host North Penn (6-4).

“The wind was blowing in a ton, and if it was blowing out the score might have been 12-11,” said Central Bucks West head coach Jim Ertel. “North Penn hit the ball hard, but the wind knocked them down, or they were hit right at people.

“Marty (Martens) threw a good game for us,” added Ertel of his junior. “He had five strikeouts and pitched a complete game. He threw strikes and got ahead of the hitters. And he didn’t walk a batter.”

The West offense featured a three hit, one RBI outing from Eugene Alpin. Collin Goldsby had a double and two RBI in the fourth inning to plate what proved to be the winning runs.

The only run that Martens permitted was unearned.

Hatboro-Horsham (4-5) exploded for 12 runs in the third inning and ‘mercy-ruled’ the Big Red of Souderton (3-7) – 12-0. The game was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning.

“We worked hard in practice about being more aggressive with runners in scoring position,” said Hatboro-Horsham head coach Pete Moore. “We wanted to have a better approach at the plate, and we sure did that in the third inning.”

The highlight of the 12-run outburst was a grand slam homerun off the bat of Matt Hollenbeck.

Tyler Zingle picked up the win for the Hatters with his five-inning outing. He improved his record to 3-0 in conference play.

“Tyler was outstanding,” said Moore. “He pounded the strike zone the entire game and only gave up one hit.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh (8-5) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 4-2 lead and defeat visiting Cheltenham (4-8) – 8-4.

“We always felt like we were in the game,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh head coach Robert Slagle. “Steve (Wallace) settled down after the first couple of innings and kept us in the ballgame.”

Wallace – who threw a complete game and allowed just three hits – struck out 10 Panther hitters.

The Plymouth Whitemarsh hitters were sparked by junior centerfielder Matt Minetola. Minetola socked a pair of triples – including a two-run triple to give the Colonials the lead in the sixth inning.

“Matt has been hitting in our number two spot in the order and has really responded,” said Slagle. “He is hitting over .500 and has great wheels. He can really go from first to third in a hurry, and he got around the bases on his triples.

“Matt started for us as a sophomore and can hit the ball to all fields,” added Slagle. “In fact, all three of his hits were to the right side of the diamond.”

Jason Cho also had a good day at the plate for PW with two hits – including a triple - and two RBI.
