BASEBALL


Nick Vitelli (Hatboro-Horsham) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored in Penn State Berks’ 10-1 win over Abington in the NEAC West Baseball Championship game last Sunday. Tom Boyd (Council Rock South) had one of five hits for Penn State Abington in the loss. It is the first time in school history that Penn State Abington has advanced to the title game. Penn State Berks fell to Husson University 2-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship game. Vitelli, who reached base on an error with one out in the seventh, scored his team’s only run.
Senior Colin Tosti (Neshaminy) collected three hits – including a double, scored three runs and contributed four RBIs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 12-3 win over Philadelphia Biblical in game one of a twinbill on Saturday. Teammate Jay Sechowicz (Council Rock South) was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. John Barrington (Harry S. Truman) earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and three runs in four innings. In Gwynedd’s 4-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader, Sechowicz, John Burns (Neshaminy), and Derek Apsche (Pennsbury) each collected a hit with Burns and Sechowicz contributing doubles. As a result of Saturday’s wins, Gwynedd secured the number two seed in next week’s CSAC Tournament. On Friday, Tosti (2 RBIs), Burns (3 RBIs) and Apsche (double) each contributed a hit in Gwynedd’s 21-7 win over Philadelphia Biblical.

Brown received First Team Commonwealth All-Conference honors. The junior catcher batted .300, posted a .408 on-base percentage and led the team in extra-base hits (15), total bases (55) and hit by pitches (10). He added strong defense behind the plate and contributed arguably the highlight of the year for Messiah baseball when he blasted a come-from-behind, three-run walk-off homer to beat rival Elizabethtown on April 15 and subsequently clinch a playoff spot for Messiah.

Millersville – ranked No. 1 in the most recent NCAA Atlantic Region Poll – will begin play in the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday. The Marauders are the No. 1 seed from the PSAC East and will face IUP in the opening round. Chris Edgar (North Penn) has started 43 games and played in 44 games for Millersville. He is the team’s second leading hitter with an average of .370 (54-of-146). He has eight doubles, one triple and one home run and boasts a slugging percentage of .459 with 30 RBIs to his credit. His on-base percentage is .448.
MEN’S GOLF
Widener senior John Ksionska (Pennsbury) was tied for 20th with a 175 at last weekend’s Commonwealth Conference Championship. Widener finished sixth overall.

MEN’S LACROSSE

In Widener’s 8-6 win over Elizabethtown in Wednesday’s semifinal, Casey scored three goals and added an assist while Hunsberger had two ground balls. Casey scored the tying goal midway through the third quarter and the go-ahead marker late in the fourth, propelling Widener to its seventh straight Middle Atlantic Conference final. Widener (14-2) broke the school record for most victories and established a new school record with its 12th straight win.
In Messiah’s 14-7 win over FDU-Florham in Wednesday’s Middle Atlantic Conference semifinal game, Kupecky contributed two goals, two assists and four ground balls.
Freshman midfielder Pat Nolan (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored his first career goal in the final quarter of Cabrini’s 23-3 win over Immaculata in Tuesday’s semifinal game of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
East Stroudsburg senior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) was named to the All-PSAC second team. It is her third straight all-conference honor. The senior attack player was first team All-PSAC East the last two seasons before the conference returned to a one-division format this year. She had 46 goals, led the team and ranks eighth in the conference with 27 assists, and is tied
with teammate Molly O’Hara for third in school history with 73 points. She also had 33 ground balls, 21 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers and was the PSAC Player of the Week on April 12 with 10 goals and seven assists in wins over Shippensburg and Millersville. In her career, Mangiaruga ranks third at ESU with 148 goals and 210 points and is tied for fourth with 62 assists despite missing the final 11 games of her freshman season and three more games over the last two years. She is the second player in school history with three 40-goal seasons, with 47 as a sophomore, 40 as a junior and 46 as a senior, and she scored 15 goals in her first seven career games as a freshman. She was one of six senior starters for the Warriors this season and won a program-record 39 games over the last four years.


Rachel Dirksen (Abington) contributed a pair of goals and one assist as well as two ground balls and four draw controls in #12 Messiah College’s 16-6 win over #16 Elizabethtown College in Saturday’s MAC title game. Teammate Rachel Coyle (Souderton) was credited with one ground ball and three draw controls. Messiah will host Denison University in an opening round game of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday. It represents Messiah’s third appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In Thursday’s 23-5 win over Alvernia in a MAC semifinal, Dirksen contributed three goals, two assists, one ground ball and nine draw controls while Coyle had one goal, six ground balls and five draw controls.
Senior Mary Dean (Cheltenham) connected for the hat trick in Penn State’s 17-11 win over Johns Hopkins in a quarterfinal game of the 2011 ALC Championship. In Friday’s semifinal game, Penn State suffered a 14-3 loss to defending ACL champion Northwestern. Dean contributed an assist.
Freshman Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) contributed a pair of assists in No. 15 Syracuse’s 12-11 loss to No. 9 Loyola (Md.) in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament on Thursday. The Orange, under the direction of fourth-year coach Gary Gait, won seven of their last nine games and posted a 10-8 record this season. It marks the fifth consecutive year that Syracuse has posted 10 or more victories. The Orange earned a share of the Big East regular season crown with a 7-1 record in league play. Syracuse has now won or shared the regular-season title in four of the last five seasons.
SOFTBALL


IUP senior second baseman Dee Eppinger (North Penn) was named to the PSAC Central first team. It is her first appearance on the all-conference team. She is batting .231 with four doubles and four home runs. Eppinger collected 24 hits, scored 23 runs and drove in 22. She has stolen five bases in six attempts.
Freshman Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) was 2-for-3 – which included a triple - with an RBI and run scored in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 11-6 loss to Immaculata in the second game of a
twinbill last Saturday. The Griffins, who dropped the opener 2-0, closed out the season with an 8-14 record in league play (10-21 overall). Farrar was selected to the Colonial States Athletic Conference all-conference first team. She led the team and was among the league leaders in many offensive categories as the rookie batted .424 with 22 runs scored, 18 RBIs, three doubles, three triples and five home runs. She also stole 12 bases.

Gwynedd teammate Tegan Wendell (Abington) received honorable mention recognition. Wendell finished the season with 17 RBIs and scored 19 runs while contributing four doubles, one triple and two home runs. She batted .310.
Beth Everist (North Penn) and Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) each contributed an RBI in Mount St. Mary’s split with Monmouth on Saturday. The Mount won game one 5-2 and dropped the second 5-1. In last Sunday’s doubleheader sweep at the hands of Central Connecticut State (10-5, 8-7), Zingle was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Everist contributed an RBI single and also got her first start on the mound in 2011, pitching the final three innings of the first game.

Sam Creamer (Neshaminy) delivered a one-out single in the seventh, helping to set up the game-winning run in Cornell’s 1-0 win over Penn on Thursday that gave the Big Red the Ivy League South Division championship. Cornell fell to Harvard in two straight games in this weekend’s best-of-three Ivy League championship series, dropping the first game 4-0 and falling 5-0 in the second. Cramer, who saw action in 31 games for the Big Red and started 22, hit .278 with three doubles and six RBIs in her rookie season.
MEN’S TENNIS
Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was part of Bloomsburg’s third doubles team that earned an 8-6 win in the Huskies’ 5-4 loss to Kutztown in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Region championships.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Paul Reilly (Upper Dublin) was part of La Salle’s 4x800-meter relay team that captured the gold medal in this weekend’s Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships, breaking a two-year-old Irwin Belkin Track record with a time of 7:26.98. The A-10 Championships were held on the Campus of UNC-Charlotte. Junior Nick Crits (Wissahickon) finished fifth in the 1500-meter and will compete in that event next weekend at the IC4A Championships.
Lock Haven’s Steve Roberts (Quakertown) finished second in the men’s 100-meter dash at Saturday’s Jim Thorpe Invitational at Penn State.
Elizabethtown’s Chris Niles (Central Bucks South) finished third in the 400-meter dash at the 2011 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships at Messiah College on Saturday, posting a time of 50.97. The performance earned Niles a spot on the All-MAC First Team, and he moved into the top 10 list with the seventh best time in school history. Teammate Luke Rotenberger (Quakertown) finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.61 and earned All-MAC Second Team honors.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Temple sophomore Victoria Gocht (Upper Dublin) snapped the Atlantic 10 Championships meet record en route to a first place finish in the 800-meter, running an A-10 Championship record time of 2:08.34. The sophomore bested the previous record, set in 2010 by Fordham’s Kerri Gallagher, by less than a second.
Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) qualified for the PSAC Championships in both the discus and shot put at this weekend’s Jim Thorpe Invitational at Penn State.
