Neshaminy 9, Bristol 0
Dave Chichilitti found himself in familiar territory when his team traveled to Bristol on Monday night for a non-league showdown between two of Bucks Counties top softball squads. For six years before taking over the helm at Neshaminy this season, Chichilitti coached at Bristol.
“It was a little hostile, but it was fun,” the Redskins’ first-year coach said of returning to his former home.
Making sure it was fun for Chichilitti and the Redskins was sophomore hurler Lauren Quense, who tossed a one-hit masterpiece and fanned 10 in seven superb innings.
“She pitched a gem,” the Redskins’ coach said. “She pitched a great game.
“She’s throwing the ball very, very well, and I obviously had knowledge about a couple of hitters. She played travel with their top two hitters, so she knew them fairly well too. She pitched a smart game, and every hop you could get went our way.”
Chichilitti went on to recount a sequence that saw a ball deflect off Quense to his shortstop, Laura Altenburger, who fielded the ball barehanded and fired to first for the out.
“Every ball rolled our way tonight,” he said.
Diana Lapalombara led the Redskins with a near-perfect 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Courtney Clee and Sarah McGowan both were 2-for-4 with doubles while freshman Carly Coleman continued her string of torrid offensive performances by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Julia McGovern was 2-for-4 as well.
Making those offensive performances even more impressive was the fact that the Redskins did it against an undefeated Bristol squad that boasts one of the area’s top pitchers in Kiersten Cain.
Interestingly, both pitchers struck out the first two batters they faced in the first inning.
“I thought, ‘We’re going to the international tiebreaker. We’ll be playing until three o’clock in the morning,’” Chichilitti said. “It looked like it was going to be that kind of game.
“She (Cain) pitched a great game. It was great competition. We wanted to face one of the top pitchers in the area. The other day we faced a top pitcher in (Camden Catholic’s) Laura Messina, and we took the loss for it, but it prepared us for this game.”
The Redskins, who completed a stretch of eight games in nine days, are off until Thursday.
Council Rock North 3, Nazareth 2 (8 innings)
Caytlin Friis delivered the game-winning hit in the eighth inning – roping a double to left field that plated Alysssa Smith.
Junior Dom Pinto continued her remarkable hitting streak, extending it to 14 games.
On the mound, Morgan Lewis was once again in complete command, allowing just one hit to up her record for the season to 10-4.
Central Bucks East 11, Norristown 9
The Patriots won a slugfest against the Eagles on Monday in a contest that saw both teams pound out 14 hits.
The Eagles actually took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Caroline Schoenewald opened the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to knot the score. That was followed by singles from Ali Vavala, Laura Murray and Julia Schoenewald. A walk to Kaylynn Johnson was followed by singles from Sam Gladnick and Caroline Schoeneweld as the Patriots batted around.
The Eagles came back with four runs in the second to make it a 7-5 game, but East scored a pair in the fourth. The Patriots added single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings only to watch the Eagles make things real interesting by, according to East coach Erin Scott, capitalizing on three Patriot errors to score four runs before the Patriots closed it out.
Norristown was led by the three-hit effort of Gabbie Berry, which included a triple. Stephanie ‘Sweat’ DiNolfi, Gwyn Botley, Julia Santoro, Sammi Kidd and Sara Rosetti each had two hits.
Coach Jon Kandrick credited the defensive effort of DiNolfi, Botley and Rosetti.
Botley absorbed the loss on the mound.
Pennridge 7, Christopher Dock 4
The Pioneers plated three first-inning runs, but the Rams answered with four runs in the fourth. Dock knotted the score in the bottom of the inning, but the Rams won the game with a three-run outburst in the sixth.
Paige DeCew earned the win on the mound, working two scoreless innings in relief of starter Emily Mayhew. She did not allow a hit while striking out one. Mayhew gave up nine hits and four runs, only three earned, while fanning three and walking none. Kelly Krause absorbed the loss for Dock.
Offensively, the Rams were led by the three-hit effort of Emily Hofmann, who contributed a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Haley Taylor added a pair of hits and one RBI while Sarah Yerk had one hit and two RBIs.
As a result of the win, the Rams upped their record to 9-8 on the season.
Souderton 2, Perkiomen Valley 0
It took eight innings, but Souderton’s Liz Parkins earned the win in Monday’s pitching duel against PV’s Tori Marcavage.
Marcavage fanned nine and allowed six hits, but Parkins struck out 12 and allowed just four hits through eight innings.
The two teams were deadlocked 0-0 heading into the eighth when Haley DeLaney delivered the game-winning hit for the Indians, a two-run home run to right field. Catcher Mollie Burrell set the table for DeLaney, collecting her second of two hits earlier in the inning.
The Indians, according to coach Courtney Hughes, delivered several big defensive plays behind Parkins.
