The SOL American-Continental squad jumped out of the gate to an early 4-0 lead over Burlington County in Tuesday’s Carpenter Cup opener at Ashburn Field in Philadelphia, but that lead didn’t hold up for long. Burlington County exploded for seven runs in the fifth – only two earned – on its way to a 7-4 win.
The SOL American-Continental got on the scoreboard with a single run in the second inning when – with one out - Souderton’s Cory Capaldi hit a solo home run to deep center field.
In the third inning, the SOL American-Continental tacked on three more runs. With one out, Central Bucks South’s Dylan Glassmire drew a walk. Methacton’s Joe Casselberry hit a two-out single to center, and both runners moved up a base, thanks to an error on the centerfielder. A walk to Hatboro-Horsham’s Casey Saverio loaded the bases, setting the stage for Quakertown’s Tyler Coleman to deliver a two-run double to center field. Saverio scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game.
Burlington County erased that lead with a seven-run fifth inning that included three errors that resulted in five unearned runs. Burlington County managed just three hits, but one of those was a bases-clearing double by Tim Gallagher.The SOL American-Continental collected only two hits the rest of the way – singles by Methacton’s Nick Strizzieri and North Penn’s Ryan King.
Burlington County held a 9-7 advantage in hits. The SOL American-Continental received on hit from Pennridge’s Dylan Tice, Upper Moreland’s David McInerney, Methacton’s Joe Casselberry, Quakertown’s Tyler Coleman, Souderton’s Cory Capaldi, North Penn’s Ryan King and Methacton’s Nick Strizzieri.
Burlington County advanced to Saturday’s second round game against the SOL National-BAL at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown at 10:30 a.m.
