On Thursday, March 3, 2011, Pennridge senior Mollie O’Brien was recognized at a special news conference for signing a letter of intent to play soccer at Kutztown University.
Mollie O’Brien – Kutztown University (Soccer)
Major: Biology
Final list of colleges: Kutztown, Bloomsburg, Scranton, University of New Mexico
Reasons for choosing Kutztown: “It was a really random thing. I was probably going to Scranton, and all of a sudden Kutztown saw me in a tournament. I went to visit the school, and I loved it. I committed to go there in a week. I just really liked the campus, and everything with my major was really good.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “Every little girl is like, ‘Oh yeah, I want to play college soccer.’ Then it was one of those things – I wanted to focus on my academic career. I was iffy about it, but when Kutztown came around, I was like, ‘I’m definitely going to play.’
“The last three years have been the best three years of Pennridge (soccer) ever. It’s been an honor to play on these teams, and it’s been great just being a big part of that.”
What position will you be playing at Kutztown? “Defense. I’ve never played defense a second in my entire life. They lost a lot of their defenders this year, and they needed more defenders. The tournament they saw me playing we didn’t have any defenders, and my coach just put me back there. (The Kutztown coach) said he loved that when I played defense I went forward because I have an offensive mentality. If I play defense, that’s fine. If I get playing time my freshman year, that would be great.”
Coach Jorge Rodriguez says: “Mollie is one of the most clutch players I’ve ever coached in the time that I’ve been at (Pennridge). She’s the kind of player that is dangerous with every possession. She has the skill, strength and soccer IQ to have a huge impact on the game. Not only is she a joy to have on our team, but she has been a great teammate to all of our players.”
