COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH WRESTLING OUTLOOK
This season, our ninth, the Hawks will attempt to build on the past by competing and winning at the highest levels of high school wrestling and blazing another path to Hershey. We have a number of student-wrestlers back from last year’s team, a team that was extremely successful – winning a 3rd Sectional title in 4 years, a 4th consecutive District title, a 3rd consecutive Regional title, earned its way back to the State Team Duals (where we placed 5/6, our second highest finish), and finishing 4th as a team in the PIAA State Championships, the second highest finish in our short history (only the 2005 State Champion Team has placed higher). While these accomplishments placed last year’s team in the prestigious legendary category, this year’s team (preseason state rank #7; INTERMAT – Preseason FAB 50 ranked #48 in the Nation) will be challenged to add to the Hawk legacy, as we will again wrestle one of the most competitive schedules in high school wrestling.
This year we will again compete in three of the most challenging tournaments in the country - King of the Mountain, Bethlehem Holiday Classic, and our own Escape the Rock Tournament (which has expanded to 32 teams). In addition, we will compete in the Final Four Team Duals at Easton. This is another event that is recognized as one of the top dual events in the country. We will tangle with national powers Blair Academy, Collins Hill, GA, Walsh Jesuit, Ohio, and others. Finally we will participate in the Rockyard Duals at CR North, where we will wrestle some of the best teams in the area. Our goal remains the same - to wrestle the best competition during the season as preparation for the post-season.
The bulk of our line-up is back from last year, and there are a few wrestlers who are prepared to make their mark. Returners include: Matt Martoccio (preseason state rank #2, INTERMAT – ranked # 19 in the Nation) – a two-time State place winner (6th in 2010), three-time Sectional and three-time District Champion, King of the Mountain Champion, and Escape the Rock Champion. Matt Rappo (preseason state rank #4) – 2010 State place winner (7th), two-time Sectional and two-time Regional Champion, and three-time District Champion. Billy Rappo (preseason state rank #1) – was a 2010 State place winner – 8th Place; 3rd place in Sectionals and Districts, and Regional Runner-up. Tim Riley has become a pinning machine, a year ago 21 of his 27 wins ended with a fall. Riley was a 2010 State qualifier, a Sectional Runner-up, and placed 4th in Districts and Regionals.
Letter winners, Connor Moore (20-8), Shane Gilmore (22-13), Tommy Trampe and Tom Dinqui were District Qualifiers last season and much will be expected of them this year. In addition, Trey Balasco, Mack Moore, Jared Rosen, Brian Heckman, Dalton Wiltrout, Dan Altomare and Brian Greco round out our group of veteran wrestlers. Each has demonstrated ability and has experienced some level of success in the past. This year, it will be interesting to see each of them apply their progress on the mat, while providing a solid base and depth to our program. Also, look for talented freshman Danny Martoccio to see varsity action this year.
