What stands 19-feet, 3-inches tall; weighs 810 pounds; bench presses 980 pounds; and can squat 1365 pounds?
That would be the collective numbers of a magnificent trio of senior linemen – one from each of the Suburban One League conferences – that will be playing big time football next season on the Division One college level.
Jake O’Donnell (Central Bucks East – SOL Continental), Kavon Johnson (Plymouth Whitemarsh SOL American), and JJ Denman (Pennsbury – SOL National) are certainly not the Three Stooges. There is nothing funny about playing across the line from this collection of talent.
Abington senior Bryan Osei will have the daunting task of going against that vaunted threesome along the line of scrimmage as the Ghosts compete for an SOL National Conference title and a District One playoff position in the 2011 season.
Osei (6-foot, 3 inches and 225 pounds) will earn his combat pay this season and will be well prepared for next season when he takes his talents to Villanova University.
“Bryan is one of the toughest kids that I have ever coached,” said Abington head coach Tim Sorber. “I think that he gets a lot of that toughness from also being a terrific (District One qualifying) wrestler. He uses his hands well on both offensive and defense, and is extremely fast off the ball.”
A huge challenge for Osei will come the first week of the season (9/2/11) when the Ghosts travel to Central Bucks East to meet the Patriots in a non-conference game. Jake O’Donnell (6-6, 235) – headed to the University of Miami next year – will be scant inches across that scrimmage line.
“Jake has a great motor on defense and presents a lot of problems with his wing span and speed – he has a very unique skill set,” said Central Bucks East head coach John Donnelly. “Jake also has a wonderful work ethic and is a very vocal leader.”
“Looking at him on film is amazing,” said Sorber. “He has that tremendous size and speed, and he is extremely disruptive to what any team wants to do on offense.”
Another huge challenge for Osei will come the second week of the season (9/9/11) when Abington plays host to the Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials in its second non-conference game. Kavon Johnson (6-2, 270) – who is still considering Akron, Connecticut, North Carolina State, and Rutgers among others – will also be a breath away from Osei along the line of scrimmage.
“Kavon is very strong and is a force on the inside,” said Plymouth Whitemarsh head coach Dan Chang. “He has a natural instinct for the game, and he is very explosive. We expect a lot from him this year.”
“Johnson has the size and ability to control a game,” said Sorber. “We are going to have to do a good job if we want him blocked.”
Still another huge challenge for Osei will come in the middle of October (10/14) when the Ghosts host Pennsbury in a pivotal SOL National Conference game. JJ Denman (6-7, 305) – headed to Happy Valley to play with Penn State next fall – is one of the finest offensive lineman in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
“JJ can not only play tackle, but has the ability to play both guard and center,” said Pennsbury head coach Galen Snyder. “Not only is he big, strong, and athletic – but he is very coachable.”
“We have not seen a kid like (Denman) is a long while,” said Sorber. “There is no question that he is a Division One player – there is not a bit of softness in his game. He has the great size, and he also has great athleticism.”
There will be more fantastic linemen for Osei to contend with down the line … Neshaminy’s Terry Kiser (6-3, 220 – committed to Temple) on 9/23/11 … Bensalem’s Bill Labadie (6-4, 260 – considering Wisconsin) … and Council Rock South’s PJ Gallo (6-4, 235 – committed to Maryland).
The time has come to buckle up that chinstrap and play some football.
