North Penn opened its SOL Continental Conference season with a stunning 3-0 victory over visiting Central Bucks East.

“The score may not have been indicative of the game,  CB East is always the favorite in our (conference) and a win over them is special,” said North Penn head coach Paul Duddy.  “It is very early in the season, and there is still a whole lot of soccer to play this year.”

The Knights may not see a better game this season from senior Curtis Washburn.  Washburn scored the first two goals of the game for North Penn and assisted on the third goal.  Jamie Bonner – who assisted Washburn on the first Knight score – scored the final goal of the game for the winners.

“Curt has a great deal of speed, and in this game he played with great tenacity,” said Duddy.  “His first goal really swung the game in our favor, and his second goal was huge.”

The big swing in the game came around the 20-minute mark of the second period when senior goaltender Dylan Elger – who recorded eight saves for the Knights – came out of net and stopped a great scoring chance for the Patriots.  Less than a minute later, Washburn scored his first goal.

“The game was very evenly played up until that point,” said Duddy.  “But after Dylan made that save – and Curtis scored that goal – we seemed to handle their pressure much better.

“I was glad that we were able to play the game on the turf – there was no way we could have played any other way,” added Duddy.  “We were anxious to play, and getting a win over CB East was a great way to start the season.”

“We did some things well in the first half, but I thought the game might have been played too slow,” said Wissahickon head coach Stuart Malcom.  “We increased the tempo in the second half, but PW played very well in the second half.

“We have some things that we have to work on,” added Malcom.  “We should get better.”

Central Bucks East opened its SOL Continental Conference season on Tuesday with a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting North Penn.

“This was a great turnaround win for our team,” said Central Bucks East head coach Paul Eishold.  “Last year we came in sixth place, and to beat North Penn is a great start for us.”

The key factors in the Patriot win were a trio of very young players.  Freshman Danielle DeMichael scored the game winner at the two-minute mark of the first overtime, sophomore Annie Axenroth controlled the game from the midfield, and sophomore goaltender Paige Marcinkowski registered the shutout with four clutch saves.

“Danielle is a real quality player, and I was not at all surprised that she could come up with the big goal in the overtime,” said Eishold.  “These kids have shown an ability to work hard and play with a lot of passion.

“We played the game with a great deal of confidence and a desire to be successful,” continued Eishold.  “And today we were successful.”

“Pennridge is a great team with a great tradition,” said CB South head coach Joe Bocklett.  “They scored two nice goals, but I was happy with the way that we played the game.

“I told my assistant coaches that it didn’t feel like we lost the game,” added Bocklett.  “We are still a work in progress, but I thought that we played with both confidence and passion.”

Pennridge outshot the Titans 8-7 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
