Council Rock North 2, Council Rock South 1
It's a battle for the bragging rights of Council Rock. It's a clash between two of the top teams in the National Conference.
And on Monday evening, as the front end of a boys-girls doubleheader, Council Rock North's 2-1 victory of Council Rock South was worthy of such an important game.
"It was back and forth the whole way," said North coach Wendell Beres. "I think we had an advantage in every statistical category, but it was a pretty evenly played game."
North opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Alec Neumann touched a ball off to Alec Greenhalgh, who put it in the back of the net. Nick Pascarella evened the score at 1-1 10 minutes into the second half, but North answered back and Dalton Andrusko scored off an Ian Fitzsimmons throw-in with eight minutes left in the game.
"A win like this is great for our confidence," Beres said. "When we gave up the trying goal, we kept battling and working hard."
Beres commended goalkeeper Will Terry for his strong play in net.
The win moves the Indians to 3-1-1 in the conference, while the Golden Hawks fall to 3-2.
Cheltenham 4, Norristown 0
Cheltenham has been oh-so-close numerous times this season. The Panthers began the season 0-3-2, but four of those games went to overtime. On Tuesday, the Panthers finally broke through and scored more than a goal for the first time in a 4-0 victory over Norristown in an American Conference matchup.
David Goldberg scored two first-half goals to give the Panthers a 2-0 halftime lead. Joe Gaitman and Remi Wachsmuth capped off the scoring.
"This is huge," said Cheltenham coach Chuck Gesing. "They've been putting the effort in, we just had to get the right combination of guys to get the ball in the box and finish it."
Gesing credited Ben Steinberg for his solid and vocal play on defense, Eliav Ehrenkrantz for "settling things down for us up top" and Dylan Wergelis-Isaacson for his strong play in his first start at center mid.
Brian Henstenburg got his first shutout victory of the season in goal for the Panthers.
Central Bucks West 3, Hatboro-Horsham 1
Central Bucks West received an outstanding effort from junior Tyler Sablyak in its 3-1 win over Hatboro-Horsham in Monday's Continental Conference matchup. Sablyak recorded a pair of assists and dominated play in the midfield.
Jared Kelly (Sablyak assist) opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Steve Cornwell (Sablyak assist) made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute, followed three minutes later by a goal from Cole Haney (Mike Bamford assist) to give the Bucks a 3-0 lead at halftime.
"We came off a really tough week," said Central Bucks West coach Steve Detweiler of a week that saw the Bucks lose to North Penn, Central Bucks East and non-league opponent Lower Merion. "We were ready to put that week behind us. It's important for us to get some points in the conference, it's a dogfight every game in our conference. They really put it all together today."
Ryan New scored the Hatters lone goal at the 50th minute. Brian Ehrlich made 7 saves for the Hatters. West sophomore goalkeeper Redd Brown made 6 stops.
Upper Dublin 1, Upper Moreland 0
Upper Dublin scored off a corner kick with 20 minutes left in the second half and made that goal stand in a tight battle with Upper Moreland in Monday's American Conference matchup.
"This was a great back-and-forth game," said Golden Bears coach Jack Knauss. "We had our opportunities, but we just couldn't seem to finish."
Knauss credited the outstanding defensive play of Nate Roberts and Carl Wambold for limiting the Upper Dublin chances on the Bears' net.
Pennsbury 4, Harry S Truman 0
In a game that was closer than the score would indicate, Pennsbury downed National Conference foe Harry S Truman in a Monday evening game.
"Truman plays a pretty attractive game this year," said Pennsbury coach Tom Stoddart. "It was a good match. They're able to move the ball around well."
Dylan Smith and Steve Tomaszewski scored in the first half for the Falcons, while Sean Heilferty and Charlie Rushing added second-half tallies.
Souderton 4, Pennridge 0
Trey Ziegler scored (Nick Stulb assist) two minutes into the game, and Jeff Wolf made it 2-0 (Ryan Molyneaux assist) 10 minutes into Monday's Continental Conference matchup against Pennridge. Nick Jachwak (Jeff Wolf and Tyler MacDougall assists) made it 3-0 at halftime, and Wolf added the final goal in the 77th minute to cap off the scoring for the Big Red, which improves to 1-2 in the league, 3-2 overall. Pennridge drops to 0-5, 0-7.
Wissahickon 8, Upper Merion 0
Six players scored and six contributed assists as Wissahickon powered in seven second-half goals en route to an 8-0 shutout of Upper Merion in Monday's American Conference contest.
Stefan Dasbach and Zach Scannapieco each scored two for the Trojans. Jimy Martinez, Matt Knittle, Joe Farrell and Neal Guaglinone each scored once. Dan Matthews had three assists, and Eric Hibbs, Scannapieco, Martinez, Nick Nikic and Andrew Brindell each had one assist as the Trojans outshot the Vikings, 17-2.
John Carrozza made two saves to record the shutout for Wissahickon. Upper Merion keeper Kevin O'Sulivan made seven saves.
Bensalem 2, Abington 1
Bensalem topped Abington 2-1 in Tuesday's National Conference matchup.
GIRLS SOCCER
Council Rock North 1, Council Rock South 0
In the nightcap of a boys-girls doubleheader, Council Rock North topped their archrivals from Rock South when Lexi Crocker put in the rebound of her breakaway shot in the second half.
Both teams' defenses shined in the National Conference clash.
"Council Rock North's defense was superb," said South coach John Oberholtzer. "We played a great passing game, but we couldn't penetrate and our shots were limited. North played with more urgency, they played a more direct game, they were a more fundamental team. Larry (Sullivan) really has them believing in what they can do."
Sam Lawson played a great game in goal for South, which also received a strong effort from Paula Jurewicz.
"Our entire defense played really well," Oberholtzer said. "But we had some kids who just didn't bring their A game tonight. Right now, we're not in synch. Some of the girls are not playing at the level they're supposed to play."
North remains undefeated at 5-0 overall and in league play. South falls to 4-1, 5-2.
North Penn 3, Quakertown 2 (OT)
North Penn dug itself a hole in the first half. It spent the second half climbing out of that hole. And in overtime, the Maidens completed the rally to edge Continental Conference opponent Quakertown.
Shannon Gibat netted her eighth goal of the season just two minutes into the game to give Quakertown the early lead. Jami Soriano was credited with a goal at the 13-minute mark on a North Penn own goal as the Panthers took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Katie Miller put the Maidens on the board two minutes into the second half. Senior Lauren Williams tied the game with two minutes left in regulation, then netted the game-winner two minutes into the extra frame.
"Lauren is one of our up-and-coming players," said North Penn coach Jim Dehner. "She's very versatile. We're putting her in a lot of different positions, and she helps us out wherever she plays. We don't play her up top too much, but we had to make some things happen so we made some adjustments and moved her up."
Quakertown goalie Sarah Fothergill made nine saves in the contest. North Penn's Laura Leonard made two saves.
"I thought we took the momentum from about 10 minutes left in the first half," Dehner said. "By the last 10 minutes of the second half, we were feeling pretty good. We've gotten ourselves into holes this season, but we're getting ourselves out. I don't know about them, but it's sure giving me gray hairs. To stay competitive in our league, we can't afford to start out slow."
The Maidens improve to 2-3 league, 4-3 overall with the win. Quakertown drops to 1-4, 2-4.
Hatboro-Horsham 1, Central Bucks West 0
Hatboro-Horsham continued its hot streak Monday with a 1-0 win over Continental Conference opponent Central Bucks West.
Mary Kate Bateman scored the only goal of the game in the first half. Lindsey Day posted the shutout in goal. The Hatters also received stellar midfield play from Gina Mallinder and Kelsey Shafer.
The Hatters remain atop the conference at 4-1, 5-1 overall. West drops to 2-3, 2-5.
Bensalem 3, Abington 0
Christine Cueto, Kayla Ryan and Joelle Himelfarb each scored second-half goals as Bensalem topped Abington in Monday's National Conference game.
Megan Wajda made eight saves in recording her second shutout of the season. The Owls also received strong games from Cueto in the midfield and on defense, and senior captain Kristen Jones on defense.
"We challenged them at halftime," said Bensalem assistant coach Jim Rodgers. "They really rose to the occasion."
Bensalem moves to 2-2 in the conference, 2-4-1 overall. Abington falls to 0-4, 0-6.
Pennsbury 4, Harry S Truman 0
A strong defense and a quick-strike offense lifted Pennsbury past Harry S Truman in Monday evening's National Conference battle.
Kym Brewton set up Amy Blazejewski in the 16th minute, then Brewton assisted on Jackie Sweeney's goal two minutes later to stake the Falcons to a 2-0 halftime lead. Megan Engelend (Uche Onuoha assist) and Lexi Brown (Lindsey Jones assist) scored a minute apart in the final five minutes of the game to ice the contest.
"Our first goal wasn't pretty," said Pennsbury coach Kaitlyn Battiste. "But we created an opportunity in the box, had it bounce off a defender, and we're getting bodies on the ball. We did a really nice job of distributing the ball."
Battiste praised the defensive efforts of Bridget Congdon.
"She's a very strong player for us," she said. "Not much gets by her, plus she helps in moving the ball forward, she was really making a lot of things happen, assisting the girls who got the assists."
Sara McDonald made one save to post the shutout in goal.
Cheltenham 5, Norristown 0
Emily Leibowitz scored twice as Cheltenham downed Norristown in Monday's American Conference game.
Marissa Gorman, Molly McHugh and Serena Smith each added a goal for Cheltenham, which improves to 2-2 in the league, 3-3 overall.
Central Bucks East 1, Central Bucks South 0
Miranda Meehan pressured the defense and battled the ball over to Abby Emmert, who put it away in the 76th minute to break a scoreless tie and secure the victory for Central Bucks East in its Continental Conference win over Central Bucks South on Monday.
"It was a very demanding game for both teams," said East coach Paul Eishold. "South probably had a little better of the play tonight, but we hung in there.
"This game was huge in terms of where they are mentally and physically. It was definitely good for us to have to find a way to pull out a win."
East remains tied atop the conference at 4-1 (4-1 overall). South falls to 3-2, 4-2.
Neshaminy 2, William Tennent 0
Katie Suchodolski (Erin Farrell assist) and Jamie Mason (Megan Schafer assist) scored for Neshaminy in 2-0 win over William Tennent in Monday's National Conference matchup.
McKenna Mullin recorded the shutout for Neshaminy, while Victoria Bremer played a strong game in net for Tennent.
Upper Dublin 3, Upper Moreland 0
Upper Dublin improves to 3-1 in the American Conference, 4-2 overall with Monday's 3-0 win over Upper Moreland.
Pennridge 2, Souderton 1 (OT)
Pennridge used the extra frame to down Continental Conference opponent Souderton 2-1 in Monday's game. The Rams received goals from Natalia Pinkney and Shannon Chynoweth.
