WARMINSTER – Jackie Rogowicz was hoping for a two-putt on the 18th hole at Wednesday’s SOL girls’ golf championship at Five Ponds. She did one better, nailing a 50-foot birdie putt to finish an even-par 71 on the soggy course.
It was an appropriate ending to a dazzling display of golf by the Pennsbury freshman, who walked away with the tournament title and finished seven strokes ahead of her next closest competitor.
“That’s fantastic,” Pennsbury coach Glenn Goldsborough said of Rogowicz’s performance. “And to birdie the last hole – she’s been pretty consistent for us, but I think she played her best round so far today.
“She shot a 77 on Monday (at the boys’ SOL championship), which if she had gone up against the boys probably would have been the fifth best score. She’s been very consistent all year, but I think her game is really starting to come around.”
For the day, Rogowicz had five birdies to balance out her five bogies.
The keys to her strong showing?
“It was hard because it was windy, but I was putting pretty good,” Rogowicz said. “I was hitting the ball fairly good too. It was a combination of both.”
Council Rock North sophomore Erica Herr shot a 78 to finish second while Central Bucks East’s Ashley Cassidy came in third, shooting a 79 to capture the bronze medal.
“I wish I could go back and redo the back nine because I didn’t hit good shots and I didn’t hit smart shots,” said Cassidy, who shot a 36 on the front nine. “I missed a lot of fairways, and in the rough, it was like a plug right next to the ball, and I just kept spraying it to the right and left.”
Herr, the defending district champion, admits she also had some problems on the back nine.
“I really struggled with my irons,” Herr said. “I was not hitting them good today. I had a little bit of unlucky bounces out there, but I definitely struggled with my irons. I probably need to work at that.
“Jackie is a great player. Walking away from this I’ll just say – you know what, I made it to districts. I’ll play there and then hopefully regionals and states.”
The goal on Wednesday was to qualify for districts. Twelve golfers met that goal, qualifying for next week’s district tournament by shooting a 98 or better.
Rogowicz and her counterparts hope that is just the beginning.
“I definitely want to go to states and just play the best I can,” the Pennsbury freshman said.
District play begins next Tuesday.
