NEWTOWN TWP. - It's no secret that the Council Rock South Golden Hawks like to run the football.
Stopping them is the problem.
The Golden Hawks ran for 355 yards on Friday night in a dominating 41-17 victory over Neshaminy at Council Rock North's Walt Snyder Stadium.
"The line fired out all night, the backs were blocking for each other and (quarterback) Brian Donnelly did a good job hiding the ball," said junior Christian Crane. "On defense, we were getting big stops. They're a very good team, but this is an example of how good we can be."
Crane rushed four times for 37 yards and scored on a 9-yard run in the first quarter.
The Hawks (6-1 overall, 3-1 Suburban One League National Conference) enjoyed a 28-3 lead at halftime, scoring with 18.4 seconds remaining in the second quarter on a 21-yard halfback option pass by Crane to a wide-open Cameron Crosley.
"I loved it. We executed it well," Crane said.
Anthony Alimenti carried the ball nine times for 139 yards. He scored on runs of 29 yards in the second quarter and 55 yards in the third quarter.
"It's always a tough game with this rival, but we have so many weapons that we keep the defense guessing," said Alimenti, who also plays outside linebacker. "On defense, we created turnovers and gave the ball back to the offense."
Ryan Whiteley rushed 11 times for 94 yards and a 6-yard touchdown. Donnelly also ran for a 3-yard TD.
"We spread the wealth and block for one another," said coach Vince Bedesem.
Neshaminy (4-3, 1-3 SOL) was within 6-3 after Nick Tucci's 31-yard field goal, but it was 35-3 two plays into the second half.
The Redskins showed some life with back-to-back halfback options, scoring on a 34-yard pass from Justin Andrews to Ron Smith.
Neshaminy fumbled twice in the second quarter, though, and both turnovers led to touchdowns. CR South's Andrew Cohen, a 265-pound lineman, broke through for a blocked punt and recovery.
"We gave our defense a short field, and they have a great scheme," said Neshaminy coach Mark Schmidt. "It's not the kind of football we're used to. Hopefully, we'll correct it."
Schmidt, whose team hosts Harry S. Truman next Friday, was more upbeat than he was a week ago after a stunning upset loss to Council Rock North.
"I'm much happier about tonight's effort than last week," he said. "We battled pretty well. I like the attitude. I didn't see anybody quit.
"I can't wait for next week. I'm already looking forward to it. It's at our place, and it's senior night."
Bedesem was happy that his defense contained the Redskins.
"Sean Ulmer is a scary back. Bobby Marterella is a scary receiver," he said. "They have a lot of dangerous weapons."
The coach explained that his team didn't do anything out of the ordinary.
"We preached all week about basics and fundamentals," he said. "We told them to line up correctly and play hard."
South has lost only by a field goal to Pennsbury. Undefeated Abington looms in two weeks, but the Hawks insist they are focused only on William Tennent next Friday.
"The day after the Pennsbury game, we focused on Bensalem. We have Tennent next week," Alimenti said. "It's one game at a time."
