Cody Stoneback – Millersville University (Baseball)

Major:  Elementary Education

Final list of colleges:  Millersville, Kutztown, Rider, Bloomsburg

Reasons for choosing Millersville:  “The program – last year they did really well. They went to the College World Series, and coach (Jon) Shehan and I clicked right away. I like that he said, ‘If you do hard work, you’re going to excel.’”

What was the progression that led you to playing baseball at the collegiate level?  “Ever since I was little and knew about college baseball, (I knew I wanted to play).
“Last year I found out I was diabetic and the year before that I had a knee problem. It was obviously a setback, but it didn’t really stop me. I was going to keep working for my goal until I reached it. I’ve been working to get my arm back in shape and keeping everything healthy.
“This is very exciting, and it’s very relieving. A lot more stress is taken off my shoulders, and it feels good to know I’m going to a school that will take me to my ultimate dream, which is to play professionally.
“The way I took it is that I will be given every opportunity to either start or relieve, whichever I want, and it’s up to me to work toward that end.”

Coach Steve Cherrybon says:  “He came up to the varsity late in his sophomore year, and he went 3-0 and pitched very, very well. Last year he had two physical setbacks, and it took him until the end of the season until he was starting to show the ability he has. Over the summer, he kept improving, and he’s in a great spot right now.
“His potential is to be not only one of the top pitchers in our league but in District One. He’s tall, he throws hard, he has good control, he has good off-speed pitches – he has everything. It’s just a matter of putting it all together and being consistent, and this year’s he’s going to have the health to do that.
“Millersville has a really nice baseball program, and Cody will fit in there. He has the right temperament – he has poise on the mound, things you don’t always see in a young player.”
