MEN’S BASKETBALL
East Stroudsburg freshman Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh), who spent last year at prep school, is averaging a team-high 20.2 PPG through the first four games this season. In Tuesday night’s 99-75 win over St. Thomas Aquinas, Grant had 12 points, four rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Junior guard Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored a game-high 19 points in Temple’s 67-64 loss to Bowling Green on Sunday. Last Sunday, Wyatt had 13 points and four rebounds in Temple’s 78-75 OT win over Wichita State in the third place game of the 5-Hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament.
Cameron Prince (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed 12 points and four assists in Lebanon Valley’s 91-78 win in the first round of the Doubletree Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday.
CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 14 points in Saint Joseph’s 65-47 win over Penn State in the first home game of the year at Hagan Arena on Saturday. On Tuesday, Aiken posted a personal best 19 points and tied his career high with nine rebounds in St. Joe’s 104-99 loss in double overtime to Iona. Aiken, who is averaging just over 11 points a game, was 8-for-12 from the field.
Senior Dan DelConte (Wissahickon) netted a career-high 31 points to lead Gwynedd-Mercy to its first win of the season in an 80-54 victory over Yeshiva in the consolation game of the Ramapo College Tip-Off Tournament last Sunday. DelConte shot 10-of-18 from the floor, which included six three-pointers, and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Four of his three-pointers came in the first half with the last field goal of the stanza to give the Griffins a 40-23 lead at the break. In Tuesday’s 79-62 win over Rosemont, DelConte collected 12 points in the first half and 14 in the game.
Will Barrett (Central Bucks South) contributed seven points and six rebounds in Princeton’s 66-42 win over West Alabama on Sunday.
Sophomore point guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) scored 13 points in Ursinus College’s 76-68 loss to Eastern University in the opening game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by Neumann University on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 81-68 loss to McDaniel, Krasna scored 13 points.
Freshman forward Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 12 points and had a team-high eight rebounds in Penn State-Abington’s 111-84 loss to Eastern in the first round of the Nate Ware Classic last Saturday.
Sophomore forward Jeff Bishop (Souderton) scored 11 points in Philadelphia Biblical’s 104-41 loss to Delaware State University on Thursday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Millersville redshirt junior guard Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) was named the PSAC East Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 21. Newman led all scorers in Millersville’s season opener against Mercyhurst. She recorded 12 of her 19 points in the second half to bring the Marauders back from a 24-22 halftime deficit. She finished the game 6-for-11 from the field, 4-for-8 from behind the arc to lead Millersville to a 62-48 win. She also had eight assists, three steals and two blocks. She had her fourth career double-double in Millersville’s 81-49 win over Slippery Rock. She finished the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds and also had a career-high four blocks while also registering six assists and four steals.
Sophomore Brittany Sandone (Souderton) had nine points in Cabrini’s 52-48 loss to Alvernia on Tuesday.
Freshman Bree Benedict (Central Bucks West) and Katie Schaick (William Tennent) both contributed a team-high seven rebounds in Penn State-Abington’s 68-40 loss to Rutgers-Camden in the second round of the Rutgers-Camden Winter Invitational. In Tuesday’s 73-64 loss to Philadelphia Biblical, Schaick shot 6-for-8 from the floor for 12 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Ginny Edwards (Central Bucks South) had a team-high 11 rebounds, seven defensive, in Wilkes’ 68-45 loss to Marywood on Tuesday. She also had three blocks.
Freshman Emily Leer (Abington) had four rebounds and three steals in Villanova’s 77-44 win over the University of the Sciences on Saturday.
Sophomore guard Liz Martin (Central Bucks East) scored 12 points in Ursinus College’s 56-54 win over Albright College. Sophomore guard Sarah Martin (Central Bucks East) contributed a team-high 11 rebounds. Senior guard Alli Rosati (Central Bucks East) contributed seven rebounds and eight points.
FOOTBALL
Senior quarterback Marshall Vogel (Hatboro-Horsham) threw for a career high 356 yards and five touchdowns on 38-for-54 passing in Kutztown’s 44-37 loss to the University of New Haven in an NCAA second round game on Saturday. Junior running back Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) was Vogel’s main target through the air, hauling in 11 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a game-high 54 yards on eight carries. Mastromatto started the scoring with a 17-yard TD catch on the opening drive of the game to give KU a 7-0 lead. He has now scored 25 touchdowns in KU’s last 24 games. Defensively, Brett Moss (Bensalem) finished with seven tackles, including one and a half sacks. Junior defensive back Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) had nine tackles. He closed out the year with a school record 11 interceptions.
Brandon McManus (North Penn) connected on field goals of 28 and 33 yards in Temple’s 34-16 win over Kent State on Friday.
MEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Christopher Davidson (North Penn) is part of a Millersville soccer team that advanced to the NCAA semifinals where the No. 21 Marauders will play No. 3 Fort Lewis (22-1) at the Ashton Brosnaham in Pensacola, Fla. The Marauders earned the trip to the NCAA semifinals with a 7-6 win in penalty kicks over No. 6 Rockhurst. Rockhurst was coming off a 2-0 win over reigning national champion Northern Kentucky.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Jake Meyers (Council Rock North) was a triple winner in Washington & Jefferson’s 138-100 win over Baldwin-Wallace last Saturday. Meyers notched first place in the 200 (1:51.28) and 500 (5:08.70) freestyle events. He also swam a leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay that finished with a time of 1:31.81.
Meyers was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week. In addition to his performance against Baldwin-Wallace, Meyers also had a trio of second place finishes in his first career collegiate meet against NCAA Division II West Virginia Wesleyan on Nov. 5. He swam the first leg of the 400 freestyle relay that swam to a time of 3:34.18. He also earned second place finishes for the Presidents in the 200 freestyle (1:50.33) and the 100 medley relay (1:48.06).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Jan Ikeda (North Penn) was part of Lebanon Valley’s 200-medley relay team that lowered the program’s record by nearly a second, winning first place in Tuesday’s meet at Elizabethtown with a time of 1:59.16. Ikeda was named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week for the third consecutive week. She continued her exceptional career start, swimming another NCAA B-cut time in the 100 fly (1:03.77) and smashing the school record in her first attempt at the 200-fly in 2:28.98. She took more than 15 seconds off the previous school record.
Freshman Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of Ursinus College’s first place 200 free relay team that finished with a time of 1:44.17 in Tuesday’s meet against Swarthmore. Swarthmore earned a 111-94 win over Ursinus.
Senior CJ Corcoran (Souderton) won four events in Washington & Jefferson’s 157-97 win over York (Pa.). She finished first in the 500 breaststroke (31.76) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.94). She was part of the 200 medley relay that finished first and set a pool record with a time of 1:51.68. She also was part of the 200 freestyle relay that finished with a pool record time of 1:41.86.
