Some SOL swimmers broke the monotony of holiday practices at the annual Holiday Distance Meet, held at Central Bucks South on Tuesday.
Events at the meet were in longer distances not seen at high school meets but typical for college.
The Central Bucks East girls had the most individual winners of the day with three. Kendall Kirsteier won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:18.33, Ellie O’Brien won the 200 breaststroke in a meet record time of 2:34.16 and Hannah Wittman won the 400 individual medley in a meet record time of 4:46.99.
“I was excited to win,” O’Brien said. “After swimming a 200, a 100 is much less nerve wracking. I like this meet a lot. I think it’s a nice way to get everyone together and have a fun meet that doesn’t count for anything the way a dual meet does.
“It’s good also because it gives us good practice for college, because those are more the distances that you’ll do at that level.”
The CB East girls also won the 400 medley relay in a meet record time of 4:12.61 and the 800 freestyle relay in a meet record time of 8:21.60.
Rachel Riemenschneider of Hatboro-Horsham won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:59.84, a meet record.
Liz McKenna of Wissahickon won the 200 backstroke in a meet record time of 2:15.74.
Clay Clemens of Central Bucks East won the 100 breaststroke in 2:14.90, a meet record.
“The competition from my teammates definitely helped,” Clemens said. “I train long yardage but still when I swim a 200 or a longer event it’s a different feel from the regular high school events, which are more like sprints.”
He hasn’t chosen a college yet but is considering Delaware, La Salle and East Carolina.
“Hopefully I can swim at those schools but we’ll see how this season ends for me,” he said.
Clemens was also on the winning 400 medley relay (3:50.24).
Michael Thomas of Hatboro-Horsham won the 400 individual medley in a meet record 4:27.92 and was on the winning 800 freestyle relay, which won in 7:33.91, also a meet record.
Pennridge’s David Zurmuhl won the 200 backstroke (2:03.20).
“I was pretty happy with my times,” he said. “I hope that the endurance from this will help me in the 100.”
Mike Chen of Central Bucks West won the 200 butterfly (2:02.52) and Ian Scullion of Central Bucks South won the 1,000 freestyle (10:38.06).
A total of nine meet records were set at the competition.
