Upper Merion Wall of Fame Inductees

Upper Merion will induct four members onto its Wall of Fame on Saturday.

ATHLETIC WALL OF FAME

The Upper Merion Area School District Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2012. The ceremony will be at halftime of the varsity boys’ basketball game against Harry S Truman High School, which begins at 7 pm. This year’s honorees are John Charles Eckman III (Deceased), Susan Bieber Helenski, Elaine Pomian Knobloch and Bobby Clark.

John Charles Eckman III  (Class of 1968): John was a tri-athlete competing in track & field, football and basketball during 1967-68 school years. He was undefeated in javelin throw in dual meets and won second place in the State PIAA Javelin Throw while setting Upper Merion records in shot put, discus and javelin. John was tri-captain in basketball, scoring 12.5 points per game, and was the leading rebounder during 1967-68 seasons. In football, he played tight end and receiver with honors as All League, All Area, and All State, including playing in the PA Big 33 All Star Game. He attended the University of North Carolina on a full scholarship.

Susan Bieber Helenski (Class of 1987):Sue was awarded All-Suburban One first team honors in the sports of field hockey, basketball, and softball. Sue led the basketball team in scoring, rebounds, and assists her senior year. Upon graduating in 1987, Sue was ranked third on the school’s career scoring and rebounding lists, and she ranked fourth in assists and steals.  In field hockey, she was a standout and named to the All-Suburban One League for two years. Four times she appeared on Softball All-Suburban One team in two positions. Sue was named by The Times Herald as one of the top ten female athletes of the 80’s decade. She attended the University of Delaware.

Elaine Pomian Knobloch (Class of 1978): Elaine was a three-sport athlete in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse at Upper Merion from 1976-78. In addition to being named All-Suburban One in field hockey 1977 and lacrosse 1978, she also was a member of the lacrosse teams that went to the state semifinals and state finals. She then went on to play field hockey and lacrosse at the University of Delaware. The field hockey team finished third in the nation in 1980, and the lacrosse team first in the nation in both 1981 and 1982. Elaine led the lacrosse team in assists three out of four years and is still third all time for assists for the Delaware lacrosse team.

Bobby Clark (Class of 1989):Bobby was a four-year starter in basketball, scoring 1626 points while leading the team in steals and placing second in assists and rebounds. He earned Suburban One League and Area First Team in 1987-88 and 1988-89, along with Player of the Year in 1989. Bobby was second Team All State in 1988-89 with astounding Upper Merion School Boys Basketball records of 822 points in a season, 49 points in one game, and 29.4 points per game. Bobby attended Philadelphia University on a scholarship.
