Five Suburban One wrestlers claimed their first sectional titles at the Section Two Tournament at Pottsgrove.
Pennridge’s Scott Parker captured his second section championship and in the process won his very first Outstanding Wrestler Award.
“It means a lot,” said the Ram sophomore. “Hopefully there are many more to come.”
Parker thought he might have been in the running.
“I saw a lot of kids getting pins all the way through so I didn’t really count on it,” he said.
Upper Perkiomen won the team title in a close race with Central Bucks South 137.5-136. Souderton moved up from fifth place to third in the finals with 106.5 points.
Parker, who won the 103-pound title last year weighing around 95 pounds, grew into the weight class this year and dominated it, despite having to sit out the last couple of weeks with an elbow injury.
Although he continued training, he didn’t start wrestling again until Tuesday before the tournament.
“I’m feeling good,” he said. “The more wrestling I lost, the more I was just itching to wrestle.”
The injury clearly didn’t hamper him as he decked North Penn’s Dalton Hogle in 38 seconds in his first match before dispatching Quakertown’s Collyn Dorney in 4:15 in the semis. His finals bout against Central Bucks East’s Evan Wilson lasted a bit longer as it took him 5 minutes and 32 seconds to attain a technical fall.
Parker is now 23-0 for the season and is one of only three SOL wrestlers to reach the post-season undefeated. The other two are Central Bucks West’s Seth Ehlo and Chris Jastrzebski.
Ehlo cruised through the 152-pound weight class, and could also have been named OW. Ehlo tech falled Jake Franklin of Pennridge in the first round, majored Ray Young of Upper Perk 8-0 in the semis and decked Souderton’s Ryan Eisenhart in 3:12 in the finals.
Jastrzebski gave the crowd the most exciting bout of the night at 182. He and Upper Perkiomen’s Dalton Fleming met for the second straight year in the finals. Last year Jastrzebski pinned him, but it was a far different story this year.
Fleming took him down in the first period, caught him in a cradle in the second and reversed in the third to build a 7-1 lead. Just when things looked grim for the Bucks grappler, he broke free and caught Fleming in a headlock. Fleming called for injury time before the ref could slap the mat.
“I’m kind of known for the headlock,” said Jastrzebski. “I’ve hit it several times. It saved me. I had it in pretty tight. I was going for something pretty big. When he put his head on my hip, it was pretty much instinct at this point because I’ve hit it so many times.”
With the four-point near fall, Jastrzebski gained an 8-7 lead before Fleming escaped to tie the bout and send it into overtime.
Jastrzebski, who had gone three periods just once all year, was up for the challenge as he executed a nifty heel pick just nine seconds into overtime to win his second sectional title.
“I was just hoping for the best,” said Jastrzebski. “I felt like I was in the match the whole time, but he caught me early. I just needed to move from my feet.”
Also winning a second sectional title was Souderton sophomore Kolton Veit at 120. He defeated Quakertown’s Alex Brulliea in the finals 8-2.
“Last year I didn’t know what it was like,” he said. “This year it was good to know what was going to happen, and I knew the people in my weight class. That made it easier for me.
Quakertown junior Tyler Seislove finally reached the top of the podium after placing second as a freshman and fourth last year.
“It wasn’t the best but it was fun,” he said. “I didn’t fell like I was wrestling as well as I was earlier in the year.”
He came into the finals with a tech fall and a pin, facing Central Buck West’s Jason Douple. Seislove built a sizeable lead before Douple made a slight comeback with an escape and takedown in the third period. Seislove, however, held him off to win 12-5.
“Last couple of matches I’ve been throwing the anchor at the end and coach Handel has been yelling at me for it,” said Seislove.
West freshman Riley Barth had his hands full with Phoenixville’s Brendan Bonner until he caught him in a headlock late in the third period.
“I’m excited, first year,” said Barth of his first sectional title. “Hard work pays off.”
Central Bucks South’s Dominic Rigous also dominated his weight class with two pins and a tech fall after placing second last year.
“It was all right, another step to reach my goals, get a state medal,” he said. “I have to go out and wrestle even harder than I did today at districts.”
Two years ago Quakertown’s Matt Jorgenson was thrown into the sectional tournament not having wrestled a single varsity match all season. He surprised many by placing third. Last year he duplicated that effort.
But this year he was determined to have his name placed on the wrestling room wall with all the other Panther sectional champs.
“It feels pretty good,” said Jorgenson
This year he had no difficulty achieving that goal as he pinned his first two opponents before beating Central Bucks South’s Nick Cassalia in the finals 10-4.
“Getting a win here feels good and it’s a first step,” said Jorgenson.
Wrestling in his first section tournament, Souderton’s Ricky Young went right to the top of his class.
“It feels really good,” he said.
Cutting down from 307 pounds in football, Young, only a sophomore, used his size to advantage. After a first-round bye he decked his next two opponents in a total of 3 minutes and 4 seconds.
“I like getting it done quick,” he said. “I don’t like to play around, get in and get out.”
