BASEBALL
Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) was 4-for-6 with a homer, two RBIs and five runs scored, but two late rallies fell short as the IUP baseball team opened its 2012 season with a pair of tough losses to Chowan on Saturday.
Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) contributed an RBI single in La Salle’s 9-3 loss to Gardner Webb on Sunday. In Saturday’s 6-5 loss to Gardner Webb, Kevin Christy (North Penn) allowed two earned runs off six hits with eight strikeouts in six innings.
Freshman Ryan Henritzy (Council Rock North) was 3-for-4 to lead Lock Haven to a 4-3 win over the Apprentice School on Saturday on day three of the Builder Invitational. Alec Jacob (Pennsbury) started on the mound for the Bald Eagles, allowing just three runs in seven innings. He struck out three. In Sunday’s 6-4 loss to the Apprentice School, Henritzy was 2-for-5.
Senior centerfielder Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) contributed a triple in Chestnut Hill’s 2-1 loss to Molloy College in the Northeast Challenge at the Ripken Experience Complex in Myrtle Beach.
Chris Edgar (North Penn) scored a pair of runs in Millersville’s 4-1 win over Fairmont State on Saturday.
Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) delivered a solo home run in Bloomsburg’s 7-3 loss to the Apprentice School on Wednesday.
Keith Moyer (Souderton) improved to 3-0 on the young season, earning the win in East Stroudsburg’s 6-2 win over Winston-Salem State on Sunday. Moyer gave up two runs – one earned – and struck out four and walked three in 4.2 innings.
Eric Ruth (North Penn) tossed a career-high 7.0 innings in his second start of the season and allowed one run on three hits, one walk and six strikeouts in Winthrop’s 2-1 loss to the ninth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday.
Michael Corrigan (William Tennent) delivered an RBI single in Abington Penn State’s 14-5 win over Centenary on Saturday. On the mound, Brian Camp (Cheltenham) worked four innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs.
Ken McCormick (Pennsbury) had a hit and scored a run in Philadelphia University’s 8-2 loss to Dowling on Saturday. Rob Spragis (Central Bucks South) combined with teammate Zach Harper to hurl 2.2 scoreless inning of relief in Philly U’s 10-4 loss to Dowling.
Freshman Brandon Martinez (North Penn) was 2-for-3 with a run scored in Kutztown’s 10-4 win over Apprentice School on Friday.
Julian Faria (Pennsbury) was 3-for-4 with a double and triple, three runs scored and two RBIs in Alvernia 6-3 win over Roanoke on Saturday.
Senior Ryan Brown (Souderton) was 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs in Messiah’s 10-9 loss to Bridgewater. In Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to Catholic University, Brown contributed a single and home run. Freshman Dan Hinchcliff (North Penn) was 2-for-2 in his collegiate debut for Catholic University.
Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) retired eight consecutive batters to close out the game and pick up the save in Rhode Island’s 4-3 win over William and Mary last Saturday. In Friday’s 4-3 win over the College of Charleston, Bradstreet threw two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. In Sunday’s 2-0 win over UConn, Bradstreet retired three straight batters in the ninth to collect his second save on the season. The North Penn alum has yet to allow a hit over 5.2 innings of work (three appearances) this season.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) blocked five shots in Temple’s 82-72 upset of #22 Temple on Saturday. Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored 11 points for Temple. The win gave the Hawks a share of the Big 5 title with Temple and ended a 10-game losing streak against their city rival. In Wednesday’s 52-49 loss to Richmond, Aiken had nine points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
In Temple’s 80-78 overtime win over La Salle on Wednesday, Wyatt had 25 points, three assists and two steals.
Guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to lead Philadelphia University to a 74-52 win over Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinal on Saturday night. In Tuesday’s 65-62 win over Holy Family, guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) knocked down nine three-pointers, including one with 0.8 left in regulation to give the Rams the win in their regular season finale. Connolly shot 9-of-13 from three-point range to finish with a game-high 29 points.
Connolly – who scored his 1,000th career point on Feb. 9 – was named to the 2011-12 All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference first team. It is the first time in his career he earned a spot on the first team. He is the conference leader – and eighth nationally – in free throw percentage (90.0). He is second in the CACC in made three-pointers (74), third in minutes per game (37.7), fourth in points per game (17.6) and 11th in three-point percentage (38.3).
Penn State Abington senior Josh Howard (Bensalem) closed out his career with 816 points, 431 rebounds and 77 assists. His 75-foot buzzer beater against Lancaster Bible on Feb. 14 is being seen all over multiple social networks. ECAC chose Howard’s shot as one of the three finalists for its Video of the Week, and it was selected as the winner for the period from Feb. 13-19. His deep three helped Abington take the contest, receiving 58 percent of total entries with almost 1,400 votes. Penn State Abington freshman forward Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) received second team All-North Eastern Athletic Conference recognition. He also received the NEAC’s inaugural Rookie of the Year award. The 6-6 forward finished the regular season as the NEAC leader in offensive rebounds (104), defensive rebounds (187), total rebounds per game (11.6) while also averaging 14.9 points per game on 54 percent (159-for282) shooting from the field with the latter being good enough for fifth best in the conference. He was twice selected as both the NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week on the year en route to landing on the All-Conference second team.
A three-pointer by AJ Picard (Souderton) with 6:17 to play in the second half triggered a 15-2 game-closing run as Goldey-Beacom College stormed back from a 12-point deficit to stun Concordia College 71-67 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinal playoff game on Saturday. Picard finished with a game-high 20 points, connecting on 8-of-13 shots from the floor (4-of-6 from beyond the arc). He also had five rebounds. Goldey-Beacom will take on the North Division’s second seed, Dominican College, on Friday afternoon. In Goldey-Beacom’s 68-64 loss to Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday, Picard had 13 points and three steals.
Dan Werth (Souderton) scored five points in Eastern University’s 103-98 overtime loss to Wilkes University in Wednesday night’s Freedom Conference semifinals.
Sophomore Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) scored 15 points in Cabrini’s 87-68 win over Immaculata University in Tuesday’s CSAC semifinal game. In Friday’s 86-79 win over Keystone College Giants, Rafferty contributed nine points and five rebounds as the Cavaliers earned their third Colonial States Athletic Conference title and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Freshman Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 10 points in Shippensburg’s 81-70 win over Millersville on Wednesday. It was his second consecutive double-figure scoring performance off the bench.
Freshman Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed four points, seven rebounds and two steals in the University of Texas’ 71-67 overtime win over Texas Tech on Saturday.
Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed seven points, three assists and three rebounds in Randoph-Macon’s 99-91 win over Eastern Mennonite on Friday.
Freshman guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field in East Stroudsburg’s 80-78 loss in overtime to Bloomsburg on Wednesday. Grant was 2-for-4 from three-point range and 5-for-6 from the foul line. He also had four assists. Grant became ESU’s second-leading freshman scorer in school history during the first half when he scored 14 points. He has 374 points this season. He leads ESU with 14.4 points per game and will be the first freshman to lead ESU in scoring on a team that reached the postseason. He extended his freshman records with 51 three-pointers and 85 free throws made and also moved into second in assists (68) and a tie for second in steals (36).
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored seven points in Bloomsburg’s 80-78 overtime win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 72-71 win over Millersville, Christmas scored eight points.
Sophomore guard Kenny Gula (Quakertown) had 11 points and two steals in Moravian’s 82-70 loss to Scranton on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Redshirt freshman center Emily Leer (Abington) scored 10 points off the bench in Villanova’s 69-49 loss to #20 St. John’s on Saturday.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior Bryn Cotteta (Norristown) was selected to the first team all-Colonial States Athletic Conference team. She averaged over 10 points a game and led the team in assists (110) and steals (51). She is ranked second in assists and tied for second in the conference in assists per game (4.4). Her points scored and assists this season are personal bests. She also set career highs in points (26 versus Centenary) and assists (13 vs. Notre Dame). Cotteta also was named to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Sophomore Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored 11 points in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 68-49 win over Baptist Bible in Saturday’s title game of the CSAC Championship. Sophomore Taylour Alston (North Penn) contributed eight points, nine boards and two blocked shots, helping GM win the battle of the boards 41-37. In Wednesday’s 82-78 double overtime win over Marywood, Cotteta scored 13 points. Matthews grabbed eight rebounds and scored nine points. Cotteta dished out six assists while Alston tied a career-high with six blocks.
Senior forward Brittany McClain (Harry S Truman) contributed 10 points and five rebounds off the bench in East Stroudsburg’s 78-63 loss to Bloomsburg on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 71-55 win over Cheyney, McClain had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Sophia Waters (Norristown) contributed 16 points off the bench, including four three-pointers, in Millersville’s 73-60 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. Teammate Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) added 10 points. In Wednesday’s 60-54 loss to Shippensburg, Waters scored 11 points.
Jordan Seiz (Central Bucks East) scored seven points in Messiah College’s 60-58 loss to Widener on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Championships.
Freshman Jessica Schmidt (Abington) scored eight points while teammate Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) pulled down nine rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 76-34 loss to Penn State Harrisburg last Sunday.
Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) contributed six rebounds and three points in Neumann University’s 60-45 loss to Immaculata University last Monday. Hinde was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Sportsmanship team. The sophomore has played in all 25 contests, averaging 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. She is shooting 67.8 percent from the free throw line.
Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) scored six points in a key 12-3 run in Bloomsburg’s 78-63 win over East Stroudsburg. She finished with eight points. As a result of the win, the Huskies clinched the PSAC Eastern Division title for the second straight year and the 14th time in school history.
Calla Miller (Central Bucks South) contributed eight points and three assists in Haverford’s 55-47 loss to Johns Hopkins in a Centennial Conference semifinal contest on Friday.

Senior Heather McHugh (Norristown) sealed Lock Haven’s 69-68 win over Mercyhurst University on Saturday, sinking a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds to play. Five of McHugh’s seven points came in the final minute of action.
Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) contributed six points and three rebounds in American University’s 58-54 win over Lafayette on Saturday.
Danielle Ciccarone (Quakertown) scored 13 points, which included a 9-for-9 effort at the foul line, in Walsh University’s 73-65 loss to Notre Dame College on Saturday.
Junior Shakia Robinson (North Penn) scored 11 points in the University of Massachusett’s 68-57 win over Rhode Island on Wednesday. In last Sunday’s 56-53 win over George Washington, Robinson had six points.
Junior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S Truman) scored nine points in Goldey-Beacom’s 48-46 loss to Dominican College in the opening round of the Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoffs on Saturday.
Freshman guard Casey Bill (Wissahickon) had six assists, three points, three steals and two rebounds in her debut season with Moravian College.

Emily Maher (Pennridge) recorded the hat trick in American University’s 12-6 win over Davidson in Saturday’s season opener. Bernadette Maher (Council Rock North) also contributed a goal. In Sunday’s 14-7 win over Columbia, Emily Maher posted three caused turnovers.
Junior Lauren McDermott (North Penn) contributed a goal in La Salle’s 10-6 loss to Oregon last Sunday. In Saturday’s 10-7 win over Iona, McDermott scored two goals, including one from behind the back.
Goalkeeper Alisha Aquilino (Abington) had six saves and senior Julie Mineweaser (North Penn) contributed a goal in St. Joseph’s 14-7 win over Wagner on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 18-10 loss to Drexel, Aquilinio had three saves.

Senior Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a hit and two RBIs in Kutztown’s 9-0 win over Fairmont State University on Saturday. In Kutztown’s 16-4 win over Glenville State, Hannum contributed a single.
Chelsea Edwards (Hatboro-Horsham) hit two home runs in Lock Haven’s 8-4 win over Davis & Elkins on Sunday at the Catawba Invitational.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Bloomsburg’s Tim Dorsch (Souderton) was named the recipient of the PSAC Champion Scholar Award at the men’s swimming championship. The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA’s Elite 88 award and honors the student-athlete with the top grade point average who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC’s 23 team championship finals. The selection criteria for the Champion Scholar Awards is identical to that of the NCAA Elite 88 awards, which honors the student-athlete with the top GPA at each of the championship finals sites of the 88 NCAA championships across all three divisions. Dorsch has compiled a 3.90 cumulative GPA while majoring in secondary education and German.
West Chester’s Calvin Starosta (Upper Dublin) won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.71 at the PSAC Championships.
Junior Dan Fitzgerald (Upper Dublin) won the 100 back, breaking the school record with a time of 48.68 at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships. He also was part of La Salle’s first place 200 medley relay (1:29.07). He was part of La Salle’s fourth place 200 free relay (1:22.45) and finished third in the 100 free (45.44). Sophomore Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) finished 10th in the 100 back with a time of 51.42.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of Ursinus College’s second place 400 medley relay team that posted a time of 3:35.87 at the 2012 Centennial Conference Championships last Sunday. Kozior received honorable mention all-league recognition as part of the 800 free relay (7:51.02) and 400 medley relay teams that finished second at the Centennial Conference Championships.
Senior Laurie McLaughlin (North Penn) finished sixth in the one-meter diving finals (222.15) at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships in Thursday. She finished fourth in the 3-meter diving competition (241.40).
Senior Kasey Blesh (Neshaminy) smashed a Lock Haven’s longest standing record at the West Chester Golden Ram Invitational on Friday, clocking a time of 5:12.91 in the 500-yard freestyle, besting the old mark of 5:17.09.
Widener sophomore Alicia Detweiler (Pennridge) was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Roll, which requires athletes to have at least a 3.2 GPA and be at least a sophomore.
Bloomsburg’s Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) finished 10th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.41, an NCAA ‘B’ cut time, in the 2011-12 PSAC Championships on Sunday. In the 100 free, Julia DeVincent (Upper Dublin) was 12th with a time of 53.37.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Luke Rotenberger (Quakertown) and Chris Niles (Central Bucks South) were part of Elizabethtown’s 4x400 relay team that captured silver at the MAC Championships.
Millersville’s Zach Kohler (Pennridge) finished fourth overall in the heptathlon at the PSAC Championships on Sunday. Kohler took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, fourth in the pole vault and fourth in the 1,000-meter run. His final point total was 4,666, good for the second highest total in school history in the event.
Lock Haven’s Steve Roberts (Quakertown) finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.51.
Sophomore Christopher Walker (Pennridge) was part of East Stroudsburg’s distance medley relay that finished second with a time of 10:15.02 at the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Freshman Brandon Mercer (North Penn) advanced to the final of the 60m dash with a time of 7.02 in the prelims, lowering his freshman record from 7.08. He finished sixth in the final with a time of 7.04. Sophomore Keith Parker-Washington (Upper Moreland) was part of the 4x400 relay that finished second.
Johns Hopkins freshman Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) improved his lifetime best in the pole vault to 3.95 meters (12’11 ½”) for fourth place in last weekend’s meet and in the conference rankings at the New York Armory that included eight other NCAA Division III schools and two clubs. He also was part of the third place 4x200 relay team (1:32.23) and finished sixth in the long jump (6.29m).
Millersville University has announced that the men’s track and field program will be cut after the 2012 season due to budget constraints. There are numerous former SOL athletes on the team, including Zach Kohler (Pennridge), Keith Ogden (Cheltenham), Seth Hibbs (Hatboro-Horsham) and Chris Jackson (Plymouth Whitemarsh. Liz Deming (Quakertown) was part of the distance medley relay that led Elizabethtown to a gold medal and earned first team All-MAC honors. Teammate Ashley Underkoffler (Central Bucks South) was part of the 4x400 relay that finished fifth at the MAC Championships and earned second team honors.
Junior Brenda Flaherty (North Penn) anchored the mile-length leg in Messiah’s distance relay that finished second with an overall time of 13:40.42 at the indoor track and field championships for the MAC on Saturday.
Jill Kostishion (Pennridge) was part of West Chester’s fourth place 4x800-meter relay team that posted a time of 9:35.59 at the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday. Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) was part of the distance medley relay that finished seventh with a time of 12:35.48.
Ijeoma Iheoma (Council Rock South) was part of Penn State’s silver medal winning 4x400 relay that ran a season best time of 3:35.80 at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. She placed seventh in the 400 meter with a time of 54.84.
Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) was named the PSAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week. The senior standout broke her own school record with a season-best toss of 58-6.75 in the weight throw at the Cornell Deneault Invitational. It is the best mark this season in the PSAC by nearly eight feet. Moses is currently ranked 16th in Division II. She was second overall at Cornell and the top DII finisher. She also added an eighth place finish in the shot put 37-05.75.
Moses defended her PSAC indoor weight throw title with a PSAC Championship record mark of 58-5.25, which topped second place by nearly seven feet at Saturday’s PSAC Championships. Christina Ohmott (Hatbor-Horsham) tied for sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 11-3.75.
West Chester’s Danielle Kuhn (Central Bucks East) finished 14th in the long jump with a leap of 16’ 1 ¾” at the PSAC Indoor Championships on Saturday. Danielle Howell (North Penn) and Kim McManus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) were part of the distance medley relay that placed ninth with a time of 12:39.98.
Lauren Bond (North Penn) was part of Bloomsburg’s winning 4x800 relay team that posted a school record time of 9:25.87 at the PSAC Indoor Track Championships on Saturday. Martina Drew (Neshaminy) was part of the distance medley relay that took third in a school record time of 12:12.71. The group broke the old mark of 12:13.08 set earlier this season. In the 400-meter dash prelims, Alexis Rankin (Hatboro-Horsham) qualified for Sunday’s finals in school record time of 58.40 seconds. She broke her own record of 58.91 set earlier this season. Rankin was part of the Huskies 4x400 relay team that finished ninth and broke the school record with a time of 4:03.51.
WRESTLING
Ursinus College freshman Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) took third at 157 at the 2012 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. He pinned Samuel Friedfeld of New York University at 4:18 in his first bout and then lost to Matt Fusaro of Johns Hopkins, 10-4.
