On Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, Central Bucks East seniors Emily Guthier and Emily Vasey were recognized at a special news conference for signing letters of intent to play field hockey at the collegiate level.
Emily Guthier – University of Pennsylvania (Field Hockey)
Major: Pre-Med
Final list of colleges: Penn, Rider, Dickinson, Ursinus, Haverford
Reasons for choosing Penn: “I decided on Penn because I was always really into academics, but I knew I wanted some athletics too, and they have a great field hockey program. The coach is great, and all the players are really nice. It was definitely the kind of program I wanted to join. I knew I really wanted to go somewhere where the academics are very high, and I can put a lot of work into both areas.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate field hockey? “In 10th grade, I joined my Mystx club team, and I didn’t realize how big field hockey was until I joined the club team and realized a lot of the girls were going to college to play field hockey. I was like, ‘That sounds like fun.’ I started trying it out and started working hard, and it worked out for the best.
“My college process took a really long time. I didn’t know Penn needed a goalie because a lot of schools – they either need a goalie or they don’t need a goalie. This kind of fell into place, and this is what I always wanted, so I was very happy.”
Highlight of playing career at East: Last year, as a junior when we played CB South to get into states, and we beat them for the first time. That was a great moment, but every season was special. It’s hard to pick one moment.”
Coach Marie Meehan says: “Emily came in as a sophomore and took over a lot of varsity minutes for (Christina) Maida when Maida was sick, so she’s been working out at that level since day one. She has put so much effort and time into learning her skills and developing as a keeper during the offseason.
“One of her major strengths as a goalie was her communication and her ability to talk to her teammates in front of her. They would be up at the 50, and she would see everything unfold. She would talk them through – when to shift, how to shift and that kind of thing. She also had strong, strong clears. She’s also a fabulous student, and she wanted her school to line up with that as well. She’s got a great opportunity. We’re so happy and so proud of her.”

Favorite movie: Dial M for Murder (the classic)
Favorite music: Every type of music, but I like Cold Play and Lady Gaga
Emily Vasey – La Salle University (Field Hockey)
Major: Nursing
Final list of colleges: La Salle, Ursinus, Salisbury
Reasons for choosing La Salle: “I was looking at smaller schools at first, and then the La Salle coach contacted me when I went to the (National Hockey) Festival. I started talking to her a lot, and she gave me a great opportunity. I really couldn’t pass it up. It’s D-1, and La Salle has a really good nursing program, so I also looked at that too.”
When did the idea of playing collegiate field hockey become a reality? “I always had in my mind that I really wanted to play. At first it was soccer. I always loved soccer, and I always thought I was going to be the Olympian or whatever, but that changed, especially after I started playing field hockey. I was like, ‘Wait, I’m actually somewhat good at this.’ I definitely wanted to play in college. I wasn’t sure if it would be D-3 or D-1, but the opportunity (to play D-1) came up, and I couldn’t pass it up.”
Highlight of hockey career at East: “Overall, the past three years have been so great. I’ve had a great group of girls each time. I’ve never had a problem with any of them, and they’re so fun. The opportunity to play with all these girls and the fact that we made districts every single time and we were underdogs – no one thought we could do it each year, and we proved them wrong every single time.”
Coach Marie Meehan says: “I spotted Emily Vasey at our camp when she was a little tyke. She started as a sophomore right away. She has extremely good stick skills and the ability to time her moves to defy any defensive player. She really progressed well with her shooting skills, and her passing was second to none on our team. She led us in assists as a sophomore, junior and senior, and the teams she played on were successful district teams.
“As a senior, she scored more goals working with Marissa Glatt. We had her in the middle of the field, and we had her at the high forward to get fast breaks. She was a huge playmaker for us. I think she’s going to have a great career at La Salle. There’s so much left untapped for her that she can learn and express and experience. I know she’ll put the hard work into it. She has great speed and good vision on the field. She anticipates really well, and that’s a key to success at the college level.”
