ABINGTON 11, UPPER DUBLIN 0 (5 innings)
What a difference a year makes.
Last year, Abington saw the mercy rule go into effect in losses to Wissahickon (11-0) and Upper Dublin (11-1) in its first two games of the season. Things have been decidedly different so far this season.
Although the Ghosts lost their season opener to Wissahickon, the 2-0 score was a dramatic improvement, and on Monday, they turned the tables on the Flying Cardinals in a contest that was halted after four-and-a-half innings when the 10-run rule went into effect.
“This was pretty big for us,” coach Ellie White said. “Last year they were all brand new to varsity, and it was too fast for them.
“I think that now that they’re all playing together, and they know what I expect of them and they know what to expect at this level – I think that’s the difference. “
Raechel Holden was the offensive star for the Ghosts, delivering a pair of home runs. Her first was a solo shot in the third inning, and her second was a three-run blast in the fourth. Junior catcher Angie LaMaina contributed an RBI triple.
Junior Celine Farina, who notched the win, has been a pleasant surprise on the mound for the Ghosts.
“She wasn’t counted on to be just a pitcher, but one of my freshman pitchers got hurt and is struggling a little bit, so Celine took these two games, and we’ve been riding her ever since,” White said. “She’s been great.”
Farina gave up a slap single to the first batter she faced on Monday and then did not allow a hit the rest of the way for the Ghosts, who evened their record at 1-1.
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 14, SOUDERTON 10
Rock North opened up a 14-5 lead before the visiting Indians scored five runs in the seventh inning.
“At the beginning of the season, there were a couple of teams we highlighted,” Rock North coach Hollie Woodard said. “Souderton was obviously one of them after placing eighth in the state last year.
“They pounded the ball. Fortunately, we were able to get more runs with the same amount of hits. Coming out on cold day, it was a battle of wills, and I was just very proud.”
Both teams pounded out 12 hits in the slugfest. Dom Pinto led the hosts with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate that included a pair of doubles and four RBIs.
“Dom was just outstanding offensively, and defensively, she kept us in the game,” Woodard said. “She made some phenomenal plays defensively just blocking the ball. We were pitching right into the wind. It was like fastballs were changeups. It was crazy calling pitches, and she just had to drop down so many times to block the ball. She had an outstanding game offensively and defensively.”
Sophomore Hannah Mumber notched the win on the mound, fanning seven.
“She’s doing a good job for us,” Woodard said. “She’s a very competitive girl, and she’s not going to back down from this challenge.”
Mumber also had a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Bailey Bigler (RBI) and Alyssa Goldberg (2 RBIs) both added a pair of hits.
Souderton was led by the two-hit efforts of Paige Shelly (3 RBIs), Nikki Canfield (2 doubles, 2 RBIs), Lauren Urbanski and Amanda Brush (double).
HATBORO-HORSHAM 7, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 1
Maggie Schaffer tossed five innings of no hit ball to earn the win, fanning eight in that span. Emily Wrenn worked the final two innings, allowing two hits and one run. Heather Lutz led the offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, which included a triple. Val Sadowl also had a triple, and Nicole Casagrand added a double for the Hatters, who improved to 2-0.
PENNSBURY 15, ARCHBISHOP 0 (3 innings)
Val Buehler did not allow a hit in three innings on the mound, but the big story of the game was the performance of freshman catcher Taylor Luise – who had five RBIs - in her varsity debut.
“The wind was blowing dead in toward the plate,” coach Frank McSherry said. “I told the kids before the game, ‘We have to squeeze things in the outfield because nobody is going to beat an outfielder today.’
“Taylor came up in the first inning with the bases loaded and hits one over the left field fence dead into the wind – a grand slam dead into the wind. It was unbelievable.”
For good measure, Luise contributed an RBI single.

PENNRIDGE 9, SOUTHERN LEHIGH 8
The Rams spotted Southern Lehigh an 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when they rallied for their second come-from-behind win in as many games. The Rams plated a pair of runs in the third inning when – with Alicia Phillips on second – Brooke Labs ripped a fullcount pitch over the center field fence.
Trailing by six heading into the bottom of the sixth, Labs led off with a walk, and Haley Taylor followed with a single to center that was misplayed, scoring Labs and allowing Taylor to advance to third. Emily Hofmann delivered an RBI single, and Keely Spanger and Bridget Casey drew walks to load the bases. Phillips, who was 3-for-5 on the day, singled to score a pair. Emily Mayhew delivered a two-run single to knot the score 8-8.
Mayhew retired Southern Lehigh in order in to the top of the seventh. Paige DeCew led off the bottom of the inning with a double to center, and Spangler was hit by a pitch. The bases were loaded with no outs after Natalie Babik drew a walk, With one out, Phillips delivered a single up the middle to score pinch runner Sarah Evers with the game winner.
Mayhew earned the win on the mound, scattering three hits in six innings while striking out six and walking none. She did not allow an earned run.
WISSAHICKON 8, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 4
Rebecca Marinucci was a near perfect 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs to lead an 18-hit attack for the Trojans, who improved to 2-0 on the young season. Teammate Kelly Gilman was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Brittany Gelman also had three hits and scored a pair of runs. Rachel Philbin collected a pair of hits, including a home run, and scored three runs.
The Trojans took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth when West plated a pair to make it a 4-2 game. The Trojans responded with four runs in the top of the seventh before the Bucks added a pair in the bottom for the 8-4 final.
Katie Ziegler earned the win on the mound, allowing six hits while fanning nine and walking three.
Cassie Zanolini contributed a triple for the Bucks while teammate Jess D’Agostino had a pair of hits. Maggie Miller absorbed the loss.
BENSALEM 10, NORRISTOWN 0 (5 innings)
Jackie Morell tossed a one-hit shutout in the abbreviated contest that was halted after five because of the mercy rule, allowing just one hit while walking one and fanning eight.
