COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 11, UPPER DUBLIN 5
Morgan Riehl slammed a pair of triples and teammate Kristin Meinotec added a triple and a pair of RBIs to lead the Golden Hawks to the big win. Jackie Schneider also contributed a pair of hits for the Golden Hawks, who notched their first win of the season.
"It was a great win for us," coach Matt McGovern said. "We set the goal to win every inning, and hopefully, that would lead to winning the game. We definitely did that."
"Becca Dougherty pitched really well. She battled and got us out of some tough spots. Morgan Riehl had two triples, which was awesome. It was an all-around good day. We faced a little adversity and overcame it, which was a big thing for us. The girls were really, really excited. We have been working hard, and it was nice to see that hard work paying off."
Dougherty fanned six in a winning effort on the mound. She helped her own cause by playing standout defense. McGovern also lauded the defensive effort of sophomore shortstop Kristin Meihofer.
The Flying Cardinals received a pair of hits from leadoff batter Ashleigh Sharp, who also drove in a run, stole two bases and scored a pair. Shannon Bolger had a hit and two RBIs for the Flying Cardinals, who committed seven errors in the game. Only six of Rock South’s 11 runs were earned.
Rock South struck first with two runs in the top of the first, but the Flying Cardinals answered with three in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Hawks scored a single run in the second and one more run in the fourth to go on top 4-3, but the Flying Cardinals knotted things up with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Rock South plated two runs in the fifth to go on top 6-4, and again, the Flying Cardinals responded, scoring one in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-5 game, but the Golden Hawks seized control of the game with a five-run sixth to go on top 11-5.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 7, NORRISTOWN 3
Jayme Zeigler fanned seven in a complete game win for the Patriots.
“Jayme Zeigler pitched a good game,” East coach Erin Scott said. “We had one big inning. Personally, I would like to spread it out a little, but after having a tough loss against Abington, we just needed to get it done.
“I’m happy that we won. We needed to get that under our belts and get our confidence back up and come back together as a team because I think we were all a little bit frustrated after losing a close game in the 10th inning.
“Norristown is still growing, and they’ve definitely grown since we’ve seen them. It was a good game.”
The Patriots found themselves staring at a quick 1-0 hole after Norristown’s Steph DiNolfi ripped a leadoff home run in the first inning.
The Patriots bats came to life in the fourth. Allie Chase got things started with a leadoff single, and pinch hitter Carla Ruscio delivered a clutch triple for the Patriots, who also received basehits from Kaylynn Johnson, Jess Haug, Sierra Huckfeldt, Sarah Decker and Caroline Schoenewald. By the time the inning was over, the Patriots led 6-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, catcher Julia Schoenewald killed a potential threat by gunning down an Eagle runner attempting to steal second. The Eagles scored a single run in the fifth, thanks to an RBI single from DiNolfi. For good measure, the Patriots added a run in the seventh when Allie Chase, who collected a two-out single, scored on Julia Schoenewald’s RBI double. Sami Kampmeier’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh made it a 7-3 game.
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 5, ABINGTON 4
Cassie Zanolini singled up the middle, and Amanda Wolfgang followed with a game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing the Bucks to eke out the dramatic win over the Ghosts. The Bucks needed those late-game heroics despite the fact that they held an 11-6 advantage in hits over the Ghosts.
Zanolini, Jess D’Agostino and Jenn Toland each had two hits to lead the Bucks. Toland accounted for two of the team’s four RBIs.
Maggie Miller notched the win on the mound for West, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out six and walking three.
For Abington, Angie LaMaina contributed a pair of hits, including a triple in the top half of the seventh. Strong throws by Jen Fabian and Jenn Toland kept Holden from circling the bases.
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 12, ARCHBISHOP WOOD 2 (5 innings)
The Indians scored five runs in the first and never looked back in a non-league contest that was halted after five innings because the mercy rule went into effect. Hannah Mumber did it on the mound and at the plate for the Indians. The sophomore hurler allowed five hits and two runs in five innings to earn the win. The Vikings scored both of their runs in the third, and by that time, the Indians had an 8-0 lead.
At the plate, Mumber was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Diana Amendolara had one hit – a double – and scored a pair of runs. Tatum Kelly had one hit and two RBIs. Dom Pinto and Alyssa Goldberg both contributed one hit, one RBI and scored two runs. Marissa Gergel and Michelle Hand each added a hit, one RBI and scored a run.
The Indians scored 35 runs in a week that saw them compile a 3-0 mark.
SOUDERTON 12, GWYNEDD-MERCY ACADEMY 4
The Indians picked up a big non-league win on Friday, exploding for 12 runs. Souderton received major contributions from Paige Shelly (3-for-4, two runs scored), Corinne Stiles (3-for-4, 4 RBIs, double, home run) and Amanda Brush (3-for-3, two runs scored, RBI). Heather Milligan earned the win, throwing four shutout innings for the Indians.
LANSDALE CATHOLIC 2, PENNRIDGE 0
LC mound ace Mary Cate Scott allowed just two hits in seven innings, fanning six and walking none. The Crusaders scored all the runs they would need in the second when they plated a pair. Paige DeCew absorbed the loss despite allowing just three hits while fanning four and walking two.
DOWNINGTOWN WEST 5, NORTH PENN 1
The visiting Whippets scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Maidens answered with one in the bottom of the inning. That’s as close as North Penn would get as the Whippets, who held a 10-2 advantage in hits, added single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings for the 5-1 final. The Maidens fell to 0-2 on the young season.
CHELTENHAM 16, LOWER MORELAND 1
Nikki Maurer had a big day on the mound and at the plate in a game that was halted after four innings when the mercy rule went into effect. Maurer fanned five and allowed three hits to earn the win on the mound, and she also was 3-for-4 at the plate. The Lady Panthers benefitted from 11 walks issued by Lower Moreland.
