CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 7, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 6
It’s always a war when the neighboring schools do battle, and Monday’s showdown was no exception. This one wasn’t decided until sophomore Mackenzie Harding – after coming up with a ground ball - scored on a free position with 12.6 seconds remaining.
“So many thoughts are going through your head,” Harding said. “I just wanted to do it for the team. It wasn’t about necessarily me making the goal. I just didn’t want to mess up. I wanted to come up big for the team.”
Maddie DiBrino, who connected for the hat trick, came up with the ball on the ensuing draw to seal the big win for the Titans.
“It was a very aggressive great game,” Titan coach Janique Craig said. “All of our league games are going to be like this.”
A key to the win for the Titans was the 13-save effort of goalie Leslie Searles.
“I will give their goalie a lot of credit,” West coach Tara Schmucker said. “We kept shooting them right to her, and she kept saving them.”
Searles was particularly effective in the first half when she turned away eight shots, allowing the Titans to go into halftime deadlocked 3-3 even though the Bucks had the better of play.
“Leslie had so many good saves,” Harding said. “She turned the game around for us.
“It makes me want to play better for the defense because they’re working so hard.”
The second half saw the two teams exchange goals. Three times the Bucks took a one-goal lead, and three times the Titans answered with a goal – twice within 26 seconds.
The Bucks took their final lead (6-5) on a goal by Tara Shugars at the 9:23 mark, capitalizing on the fact that the Titans were down a player. Still down a player, South’s Emily Cliggett came up with the ball on the ensuing draw and scored a free position goal at the 8:57 mark, knotting the score 6-6.
Both teams had chances to take the lead, but neither could convert until Harding’s game winner in the closing seconds.
“For some reason, we just looked rattled and just needed some more leadership and poise, and for some reason, we just didn’t have it today,” Schmucker said. “I know CB South is younger, but in my opinion, they had more poise than we did, and we had more seniors.
“I just think looking forward we have to be able to capitalize on their mistakes, and we certainly can’t afford to shoot ourselves in the foot.”
The Bucks received single goals from six different players – Steph Cooper (Jane Savard assist), Jacqueline Fitzgerald (Shugars assist), Jess Circuit, Christine Munsell (Circuit assist), Savard (Fitzgerald assist), and Shugars.
In addition to DiBrino, Cliggett and Harding, the Titans also received a single goal from Brynn Dietzel.
“We came into the game knowing they were really aggressive, and it would be a fight,” Harding said. “We said from the beginning that it was about heart and being accountable for your own mistakes, and it was about teamwork and coming together on the field.
“It was a tough game, but it was fun.”
The Titans (3-1) evened their league mark at 1-1 while the Bucks fell to 0-2 in league play (3-2 overall).
NORTH PENN 18, RIDLEY 8
Senior Rachel Shaw turned in a stellar performance for the Maidens, scoring seven goals and also coming up with seven draw controls. Kaitlin Suzuki scored five goals, and Hannah Young added three goals and one assist. Brenda McDermott scored a goal and also handed our four assists. Aubrie Stouffer had three assists while Laura DeLongis added one goal.
“We were pretty balanced scoring-wise,” coach Jami Wilus Behm said. “Everyone got involved in the offense.
“Kaitlin Suzuki had a big game and made all of her eight-meter shots. I think it was just the offense clicking. Every game I feel like we’re getting a little bit better at seeing the openings and seeing the open players and just becoming a little bit more accustomed to who’s on the attack this year and not thinking of last year because we have a totally different team.”
Goalie Jenna Stover recorded nine saves. Gabby DiDomizio was credited with six ground balls in a contest that saw the Maidens hold a 28-17 advantage in shots.
“We had a lot more assists than we did in recent games, and we were able to get our fast break started,” Behm said. “I think a key to that was Jenna Stover making some saves on the defensive end and starting the transition which led to some really good scoring opportunities on the attack.”
The Maidens actually trailed 3-1 early on but recuperated to seize control of the game.
“We weren’t winning the draw control at the beginning of the game,” Behm said. “Rachel Shaw started controlling the draw. She was really dominant today and played how we all know that she can.”
The Maidens improved to 3-1 on the young season.
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 14, UPPER MORELAND 4
Meghan McCullough and Kayla Wisnewski both connected for the hat trick to lead a balanced PW attack. Sami Heller and Jenna Kalman both added two goals while Amy Fink, Kirsten Monte, Sarah Naylor and Gab Schumacher each scored one goal. PW goalie Jordan Daunacusky recorded six saves.
The Golden Bears received single goals from Kathryn Brunner, Maddie Mauro, Lily Sgro and Sami Wojciechowski. UM goalie Kaitlin Taylor turned away 14 shots in goal.
The Colonials evened their league mark at 1-1 (1-3 overall) while the Golden Bears are 0-1 in the league (1-2 overall).
HATBORO-HORSHAM 19, MARSHALL (Va.) 7
Marshall High School came into Monday’s game against the Hatters at Disney World with a big reputation, boasting four players on its roster who have committed to play at the Division One level. They turned out to be no match for the Hatters, who have five D-1 signees of their own.
With the Hatters on top 6-4, coach Duncan Swezey called a timeout. The Hatters responded with a 6-0 run, and things were never the same as they rolled to the decisive win.
Courtnee Daley had a big day at both ends of the field. The senior midfielder not only scored a team-high five goals but also was credited with four ground balls. Jenna Cutilli also had four ground balls and Caroline Hagan had three ground balls. Nicole Beck and Lizzy Carr (two assists) both scored four goals while Julie McKay (one assist) contributed the hat trick. Hagan also had two goals and two assists while Rachel Rausa had one goal. Katie McKay added an assist for the Hatters, who improved to 4-0 on the season.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 18, VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 11
Mary Kate Schwartz and Sam Axenroth both scored six goals in glittering offensive performances for the Patriots. Axenroth also had a pair of assists while Schwartz had one assist. Julia Norek had a pair of goals while Olivia Gracey, Maggie Stella, Laura Betrus and Marissa Glatt each had single goals. Lauren Wick had a pair of assists.
“Lauren Wick and Mary Kate Schwartz sparked the draw control and hustled to ground balls to lead Maggie Stella to our first goal 45 seconds into the game,” coach Megan Macauley said. “Mary Kate and Sam were a dynamic duo controlling the midfield with transitions.
“Our defense stepped up with Kelly Lapp. She was an integral part of our defensive unit. She’s an extremely versatile player, who will play anywhere the team needs her. Each player made improvements today to walk away with the win.”
Madi Steuber had 17 saves in goal for the Patriots.
The Patriots upped their overall record to 4-2.
WISSAHICKON 18, NORRISTOWN 9
Laura Frankenfield had huge performance to lead the Trojans, scoring eight goals and contributing three assists. Rachel Zucker added the hat trick while Zoe Gomez, Zoe Kale and Taylor Myers each added a pair of goals. Angela Virtu scored a single goal.
Norristown was led by the six-goal effort of Beverly Pute while Kerri Harner added two goals and Megan Grande, one goal.
The Trojans are 2-0 in league play (2-1 overall) while the Eagles are searching for their own win (0-2 SOL, 0-3 overall).
SOUDERTON 22, PENNRIDGE 14
Alyssa Ziegler and Natalie Bulgier both scored five goals to lead a high-powered Indian attack. Ziegler also had an assist. Amber Lambeth scored four goals while Chessie Rahmer and Alexa Schneider each connected for the hat trick. Schneider also contributed an assist while Rahmer added two assists and eight draw controls.
Liz Mower had one goal and one assist, Tori Bulgier had one goal and two assists and Sydney Niles had one assist.
The Rams also received a pair of five-goal efforts as both Aerin McHugh and Leah Alcott erupted for five goals. Jackie Stevens scored two goals while Taylor Dachowski and Maddie Maher both scored one goal.
Goalie Kaitlin Crouthamel had 10 saves for the Indians. Pennridge’s Lynsey Babcock (nine saves) and Danielle Nichols (six saves) combined to turn away 15 shots.
The Indians improved to 2-0 in league play (3-0 overall) while the Rams are 0-2 in the league (1-4 overall).
