SOL Girls' Lacrosse Wrap (4-19-12)

Pennsbury earned a big win over Abington in girls’ lacrosse. Check out all of Thursday’s SOL results.

PENNSBURY 11, ABINGTON 10
The Falcons had a day to remember on Thursday, defeating the Ghosts for the first time in program history.
“They were so excited,” coach Kelly White said of her players. “I have never seen them so happy, I have never seen them so focused.
“We have been preparing for every game but really have been preparing to play Abington. Abington has some really nice players. Meredith Cox had a great game today, but from the moment we hit the Abington field, I could just sense with my girls – they were ready for this moment.”
Although the game was tightly contested, the Falcons led from wire to wire.
“There were times when the lead diminished,” White said. “Down to the last seconds of the game – Abington had it down in our defensive zone to go on the attack, and my defense did amazing.
“My goalie had a great game, and we were able to hold them off.”
White credited several players for leading the Falcons defensively.
“Carson Smith has probably been one of our number one defenders the whole season,” White said. “She’s my D-wing, and she’s done a good job. She’s only a sophomore, and she’s moved up from a low defense to the midfield to help us out this year, and she had a ton of draw controls today.
“Ali Hickman had a great defensive game, a lot of denying the transition from a low defender position, and Liana (Eyre) was amazing in goal as well.”
Eyre turned away 16 shots in a standout effort.
Offensively, the Falcons were led by the four-goal efforts of Joy Hopkins and Jackie Sweeney. Hopkins also had a pair of assists while Sweeney had one assist. Alyssa Matthews added a pair of goals, and Elle Fagan had a single goal. Rachel Pierce also had an assist.
As a result of the win, the Falcons improved to 3-1 in league play and take over sole possession of second place behind only Council Rock North in the National Conference standings.
“I remember when I first started, Abington beat us twice, and I think it was 19-1 and 23-1,” White said. “Every year we keep stepping up and making the gap smaller and smaller.
“This year against Abington we were able to eliminate the gap and come through with a win. This is huge. We have never been in second place in the league.”
The Falcons are 6-4 overall after an 0-3 start.
“We definitely started the season off slow,” White said. “We really regrouped, and we’ve only lost one game since then. That was to Council Rock North, and even that game was 5-3 at halftime, which is a big difference from previous years.”
The Falcons have just one senior with the majority juniors in addition to two sophomores and two freshmen in the starting lineup.
“The junior class is the class I started with as a head coach,” White said. “If you look at the evolution of the team at this point, it’s huge.”
Cox had a big day for the Ghosts, contributing five goals and five caused turnovers. Elisa MacCool and Hanna Sjoholm both contributed two goals and one assist. Kelsey Fitzgerald had one goal and one assist. Allison Rooney had one assist. Abington goalie Kate Margolis also turned away 16 shots.
“Abington is a great team, and they deserve props,” White said. “Chris Aquilino is a great coach. His team is young as well, but he has a lot of talented players.
“It was a fun game today.”
The Ghosts fell to 2-2 in league play (2-8 overall)

HATBORO-HORSHAM 17, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 4
Cortnee Daley scored five goals and contributed an assist to lead the Hatters to their third win of the week. Julie McKay (one assist) and Rachel Rausa both scored two goals, and Lizzy Carr had one goal and four assists.

ACADEMY OF THE NEW CHURCH 14, UPPER MORELAND 6
