SOL Girls' Lacrosse Wrap (4-25-12)

Rock North defeated Hatboro-Horsham in a battle of the SOL’s top squads. Check out all of Wednesday’s results.

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 14, HATBORO-HORSHAM 13

Rock North senior Kara Magley stole the spotlight in Wednesday’s marquee SOL matchup featuring the top teams from the National and Continental Conferences. The senior standout scored seven goals and also had a pair of assists.
“She was unstoppable today,” Rock North co-coach Pat Toner said. “She’s always very strong, but today she was unstoppable.”
Hannah Plappert added three goals and three assists, and Molly Doyle had three goals and two assists in solid supporting roles. Tori Lyon added a single goal.
“Hannah and Molly also had good games,” Toner said. “Taylor Beck came through with 10 saves on 23 shots, and some of them were pretty scary shots.”
The Indians sprinted to a 7-4 halftime lead but then watched the Hatters reel off six unanswered goals to go on top 10-7. The Indians regrouped, and they won it when Magley scored with 1:46 remaining to put the Indians on top 14-13.
“The thing I’m most proud of is the way they pulled it together,” Toner said. “When they were up 10-7, I thought we were in trouble, but they chipped away.
“We got it to a tie score, and I was very happy that we were able to possess the ball at the end of the game after we got the shot and won the draw.
“It was the longest one minute and 46 seconds of my entire life. They sent doubles, and they were trapping the ball, but we were able to maintain our composure.”
The Hatters were led by the four-goal, one-assist effort of senior Nicole Beck. Cortnee Daley added three goals and two assists while Lizzy Carr (one assist) and Katie McKay both had two goals. Julie McKay and Caroline Hagan each added one goal. Rachel Rausa had one assist.
“They’re a very good team,” Toner said. “I’m sure they’re playing under a lot of pressure, the same as us, and on any given day, anyone can beat anyone else.
“I don’t think too many people gave us a chance, but I said to the kid right off the bat, ‘You’ve been on both ends of this. You’ve lost games you shouldn’t have lost, and you’ve won games people didn’t think you could win, so hang in there.’
“It was a very high level, intense game. They just needed to calm down and play their game, and I thought they were able to do that.”
While the Hatters fell to 10-2, the Indians upped their record to 11-2 overall.

PENNSBURY 11, WISSAHICKON 5
Joy Hopkins, Jackie Sweeney and Kelsey Gumbert connected for three goals each in Pennsbury’s non-league win over the Trojans. Gumbert also was credited with five assists while Sweeney added one assist. Alyssa Matthews and Carson Smith both added single goals for the Falcons, who picked up their eighth win in their last nine games.
“It’s been exciting,” coach Kelly White said. “It’s fun to be winning, but you have to keep improving in order to keep winning.
“That’s kind of where I’m at with them right now – you can’t be content, you can’t be satisfied, you have to want to get better at every game and every practice.”
Falcon goalie Liana Eyre was credited with seven saves in Tuesday’s win, and White credited her team’s defense for its strong play.
“My goalie, Liana, has done a great job for us,” the Falcons’ coach said. “On defense, Ali Hickman and Carson Smith have really stepped it up for us.
“The offense has stepped it up as far as taking care of the ball and taking higher percentage shots rather than just going in and winging a shot for the heck of it. We have really been focusing on possession and higher percentage shots and really working the ball and, if we’re in the lead, taking time off the clock and making good decisions. Just the basic fundamentals of lacrosse.”
Zoe Gomez had a pair of goals to lead the Trojans while Laura Frankenfield had one goal and one assist. Lauren Irvine and Ashley Laskowitz both added one goal. Angela Virtu had one assist.
While the Trojans fell to 6-5 overall, the Falcons upped their overall mark to 8-4.
“I’ve very proud and very happy with where we are at this point,” White said. “We just have to keep on moving.”
