BASEBALL
Moravian sophomore second baseman Daniel Seitzinger (Central Bucks West) was named to the Landmark All-Conference second team. He was the Greyhounds second leading hitter with a .366 batting average (56-for-153) with 30 runs scored, 28 RBIs, 15 stolen bases, seven doubles and a triple. Moravian finished its 2012 season with a 28-16 record after falling to Drew 10-9 in the Landmark Conference Championship game on Monday. Seitzinger was 1-for-4 in the loss. Moravian was ranked 8th in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings released Thursday.
Drew Frankenfield (Wissahickon) had two hits in York College’s 12-4 loss to Franklin & Marshall in last Sunday’s season finale.
Greg Welsh (Council Rock South) worked 2.2 scoreless innings in relief in Penn State’s 3-2 win over Illinois on Friday. Welsh did not allow a hit while walking one and striking out three.
Kevin Christy (North Penn) earned the win in La Salle’s 4-1 win over St. Joseph’s on Sunday in the rubber game of a three-game series between the schools. The Explorers’ mound ace scattered five hits and allowed one run while walking none and fanning five in six strong innings. Teammate Jon Gyles (Central Bucks East) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. In Friday’s 4-2 loss to St. Joe’s, Adam Kammler (Pennridge) contributed a sacrifice fly.
Ryan Pater (Central Bucks East) was 2-for-4 in St. Joe’s 4-1 loss to La Salle on Sunday. In Saturday’s 12-4 loss to La Salle, he was 1-for-3 with a double. In Friday’s 4-2 win over La Salle, Pater contributed an RBI triple.
West Virginia freshman second baseman Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) was 6-for-12 with five runs and one double in last weekend’s series against No. 18 Louisville. In Wednesday’s 4-3 win over Akron in 10 innings, Fleming singled to lead off the 10th and scored the game winner on a sacrifice fly by teammate Alan Filauro.
Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) tossed a career-high 5.2 innings in relief in Rhode Island’s 5-2 loss in 14 innings to Richmond on Saturday. He retired 16 of the first 18 batters he faced – including 10 in a row to start off – but was charged with the loss after giving up a two-run double in the top of the 14th inning. Rhode Island was once again the top-ranked team in New England last week, according to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association.
James Smith (North Penn) was 2-for-5 with a double, run scored and an RBI in St. Peter’s 13-0 win over Savannah State on Friday.
Freshman Craig Lepre (North Penn) was 1-for-3 in Albany’s 9-5 win over Binghamton in game one of a twinbill on Saturday. In the nightcap of Albany’s doubleheader sweep, Lepre was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
FIELD HOCKEY
Kutztown’s Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) was one of nine student-athletes to receive a year-end academic honor. Rosenkaimer’s award was given by the Department of History.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
IUP senior midfielder Stephanie Bianco (Upper Merion) was named to the second team All-PSAC squad. It is her second conference postseason honor. Bianco finished third on the team with 41 goals and fourth with 45 points. She also led IUP with a school-record 92 draw controls, adding 37 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. The Crimson Hawks finished the year with an 11-6 record, tying the school mark for the most wins in program history and earned their way into the PSAC Tournament for the first time ever.
Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) contributed a goal in No. 4 Syracuse’s 15-5 win over No. 9 Dartmouth in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday. Syracuse will face No. 5 North Carolina in a quarterfinal game next weekend in the Carrier Dome.
Bloomsburg sophomore Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) was selected to the All-PSAC second team. It is the first all-conference award of her career. She led the Huskies with 59 ground balls, the most by a Bloomsburg player since 2005, and she led the team with 29 caused turnovers. In 2012, Bossert registered 18 points on 15 goals and three assists, the most by any of Bloomsburg’s defensemen. Bossert also earned the PSAC Champion Scholar Award at the women’s lacrosse championships this season for having the top GPA of any lacrosse player competing in the PSAC Championships.
Bloomsburg freshman defender Carly Ball (North Penn) picked up third team All-PSAC honors for her efforts this season. Ball started in all 19 games and racked up 11 points on 10 goals and an assist. She also collected 19 ground balls, caused 12 turnovers and controlled nine draws.
Sophomore Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a free position goal in Penn State’s 15-8 win over No. 8 Towson in a first round NCAA Tournament game on Saturday. As a result of their first NCAA win since 1999, the Nittany Lions will face No. 1 seed Florida in Gainesville in a quarterfinal game on Saturday, May 19.
Senior Rachel Dirksen (Abington) collected an assist in Messiah’s season-ending 16-5 loss to Colby College in the NCAA Regional Semifinals on Saturday. She completes her career as the most accomplished individual player in Falcons’ history. She ends the season as the Falcons’ all-time leader in career goals scored (238), assists (107), ground balls (161) and draw controls. Saturday’s loss also marked the end of the line for fellow senior Rachel Coyle (Souderton). Both were part of a senior class that finished their careers with a record of 61-15 – the most wins over a four-year stretch for a Falcons’ team. This marked the third time in four years that the Falcons advanced into the NCAA Championships. In Wednesday’s opening round 18-8 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dirksen contributed three goals and an assist while Coyle had a one goal, one assist, two ground balls and two draw controls.
SOFTBALL
Samantha Schoell (North Penn) contributed an RBI single in Temple’s 4-2 loss to Charlotte in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Wednesday.
East Stroudsburg senior Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) has been named to the Daktronics Atlantic Region second team at the designated player position. Gieringer, the PSAC East Player of the Year, hit .355 with seven doubles, a triple, five home runs, 25 RBI and 24 runs to earn her second career mention on an All-PSAC East team this season. Gieringer hit over .300 in all four of her seasons at ESU, batting .303 as a freshman, .348 as a sophomore, .344 as a junior and .355 as a senior. She finishes her career ranked ninth at ESU in batting average (.339), ninth in on-base percentage (.395) and sixth in slugging percentage (.505). She is second in school history with 17 home runs and 85 RBI, fifth with 161 hits and 240 total bases and tied for sixth with 44 extra-base hits. She is also eighth with 76 runs scored.
Allison Herbert (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a 4-0 record on the mound for King’s College this season. She threw 32.1 innings and earned wins over Lycoming, Baptist Bible, Drew and Keystone. King’s saw its season come to an end after an 8-5 eight-inning loss to Manhattanville in the Freedom Conference Tournament.
Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in No. 3 Kutztown’s 5-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The win gave the Golden Bears their first ever NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional title. Kutztown now advances to the NCAA Division II Softball Championships May 16-19 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Golden Bears will open play in the double elimination tournament against Augustana (S.D.) on Wednesday.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Gwynedd-Mercy junior James Rogers (Cheltenham) finished sixth in 5000 meter race at last weekend’s Mason Dixon Outdoor Championships, posting a season best time of 16:21.63.
St. Joseph’s sophomore Jon Eisemann (Central Bucks South) finished seventh in the 200 meters (21.98) and ninth in the 100 meters (11.05) at last weekend’s Atlantic 10 Championships in Amherst, Mass. Teammate Matthew McGarvey (Central Bucks West) was part of the 4x800 relay team that posted a time of 7:33.10 to take third.
Millersville’s Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) finished third in the 400 meter dash at the Virginia Challenge on Saturday, posting a time of 53.18.
Brandon Bennett-Green (Cheltenham) was part of Penn State’s 4x400 relay that captured first place at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Sunday, posting a time 3:04.78. It is the program’s first ever Big Ten title in the 4x400 relay, and the time matches the Penn State record set at the Penn Relays two weeks ago. The effort was the fastest winning time since 1994 and just off the Big Ten meet record of 3:04.45 set by Indiana in 1985. The Nittany Lions also tied the University of Wisconsin’s McClimon Track record in the effort, matching Ohio State’s 3:04.78 from 1994. Bennett-Green captured the bronze medal in the 400 meter race by turning in a PR of 45.94.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Gwynedd-Mercy freshman Kaitlin Iffrig (Pennsbury) finished with a season-best time of 28.57 while teammate Khaliah Darden (Pennsbury) posted a time of 28.89 in the 200 meter dash in last weekend’s Mason Dixon Outdoor Championships. Senior Lauren Brown (Pennsbury) also turned in a season-best time in the 400 meter dash, posting a time of 1:02.53. Freshman AnaLee Rodriguez (Pennsbury) captured 10th place in the shot put (9.25 meters) and discus (27.95 meters) as well as eighth place in the javelin (27.25 meters).
Lock Haven senior Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) won the hammer throw with a mark of 182-1 at the 2012 Gator Track and Field Invitational hosted by Allegheny College this weekend. Her throw is the nation’s 11th best this season in Division II and puts her in a strong position to be selected for the upcoming NCAA Championships.
Moses took home top honors on Tuesday at Lock Haven’s annual Spring Student-Athlete Awards Banquet. She received the Charlotte E. Smith Award, which is given annually to a senior female student-athlete in recognition of her accomplishments in women’s athletics, outstanding leadership and academic achievement. Last week, Moses won her first PSAC hammer throw title at the conference championships, breaking the school and PSAC Championships record. A three-time PSAC Indoor Weight Throw Champion, Moses is a six-time NCAA qualifier.
St. Joseph’s senior Kelsey Rose (Upper Dublin) finished seventh in the 800 meters (2:13.81) at last weekend’s Atlantic 10 Championships in Amherst, Mass.
Shippensburg’s Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) finished seventh in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.76 at this weekend’s Virginia Challenge.
Penn State sophomore Brittney Howell (Cheltenham) was the top Nittany Lion finisher in the women’s heptathlon at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships this weekend. Howell finished ninth overall with a personal-best total of 5,093 points. Howell’s top event finish of the day was a sixth place showing in the long jump with a leap of 18-6.50 (5.65). Howell was in fifth place after one day, turning in a four-event point total of 3308. Senior Ijeoma Iheoma (Council Rock South) posted a personal best time of 53.15 in the 400 preliminary. It was the fourth fastest time in Penn State record books and was the sixth best qualifying time, earning Iheoma a spot in the finals. She finished fifth in Sunday’s final with a time of 53.34, the second fastest effort of her career.
