BASEBALL
Ryan Pater (Central Bucks East)
was 2-for-3 with a run scored in St. Joseph’s 3-2 loss to Xavier on Saturday. Pater, who bats out of the leadoff spot, closed out the regular season with the Hawks’ highest batting average (.279, 36-for-129). St. Joe’s will head to the Bronx for the 2012 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship. The Hawks, playing in the tournament for the first time, will begin play on Wednesday against third-seeded Rhode Island.

Kutztown catcher Matt Albaugh (North Penn) was named to the Daktronics and National Collegiate Baseball Writers squad, receiving honorable mention recognition.

Ryan Brown (Souderton) contributed a sacrifice fly in Messiah’s 3-1 upset over No. 1 seeded Christopher Newport on Wednesday to advance to the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Regional Tournament. In Messiah’s 9-6 loss to Rowan University in an NCAA Regional playoff game on Friday, Brown singled and scored a run.

Michael Corrigan (William Tennent) collected two of his team’s four hits in Penn State Abington’s 8-1 loss to Penn State Behrend in the ECAC South semifinal round on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 10-6 win over McDaniel College in the first round of the ECAC South Tournament, Brian Camp (Cheltenham) earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and one run in five innings of relief. Will Erskine (North Penn) singled and scored a run.

Penn State Abington sophomore Henry Rosenbloom (Cheltenham) was named to the Spring 2012 Director’s List for boasting a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

Senior Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) had a pair of hits in La Salle’s 4-3 loss to Dayton on Friday. In La Salle’s 3-2 loss to Dayton on Thursday, senior Adam Kammler (Pennridge) had a pair of singles.

Freshman Matt Hollenbeck (Hatboro-Horsham) threw a scoreless eighth inning in Georgetown’s 15-4 win over Cincinnati on Saturday.

Freshman second baseman Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) was 1-for-2 with a run scored in West Virginia’s 10-8 win over the University of South Florida on Friday. He collected three hits in West Virginia’s 6-3 win over USF on Thursday. In Tuesday’s 5-1 win over La Salle, Fleming was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Freshman Greg Lepre (North Penn) was 1-for-1 with an RBI in Albany’s 24-2 win over Hartford on Saturday. Albany finished second in the America East Conference and will compete in the conference tournament beginning on Wednesday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Penn State Abington senior Joshua Howard (Bensalem) was named to the Spring 2012 Director’s List for boasting a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Penn State Abington freshmen Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West), Tori Kimberly (Central Bucks West) and Jessica Schmidt (Abington) were named to the Spring 2012 Director’s List for boasting a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Penn State Abington freshman Nick Volpe (William Tennent ) was named to the Spring 2012 Director’s List for boasting a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington sophomore Faith Sykes (Souderton) and freshman Victoria Brady (North Penn) were named to the Spring 2012 Director’s List for boasting a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

MEN’S LACROSSE
Messiah junior Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Sportsmanship Team. The honor is given to a player from each conference school who has demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season. The players are selected by the players and coaches from their respective schools.   

Penn State Abington sophomores Marcello D’Amore (Abington) and Robert Shulski (Hatboro-Horsham) as well as Andrew Girondo (Upper Dublin) were named to the Spring 2012 Director’s List for boasting a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Sophomore Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) is part of a No. 4 Syracuse lacrosse team that earned a spot in next weekend’s NCAA Tournament Final Four, thanks to the Orange’s 17-16 come-from-behind win over No. 5 North Carolina in Saturday’s quarterfinal game at the Carrier Dome. The Orange will face top-seeded Florida on Friday, May 25, in a semifinal contest in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Orange beat the Gators 12-11 in two overtimes in the fourth game of the season.

La Salle senior defender Sara Ciaverelli (North Penn) was named to the All-Philly Division I second team while junior midfielder Lauren McDermott (North Penn) and senior defender Allison Herman (North Penn) were named to the third team.

Messiah seniors Rachel Dirksen (Abington) and Rachel Coyle (Souderton) were named to the IWLCA All-Region First Team. The All-Region awards are for the Metro Region of the IWLCA. Both were members of a senior class that will go down as the most accomplished class in program history. They graduate with a career record of 61-15 - the most wins over a four-year stretch for a Falcons’ team. This season also marked the third time in four years that the Falcons advanced into the NCAA Championships with the two other years – 2009 and 2011 – including MAC Championships. Dirksen graduates as the most accomplished individual player in Falcons’ history. She ended her career as the Falcons’ all-time leader in career goals (238), assists (107), groundballs (161) and draw controls (237). Coyle is one of the most effective and feared defenders in the Commonwealth Conference and NCAA. She led the Falcons this season with 52 groundballs and 37 caused turnovers, with her 2.18 caused turnovers per game average ranking 27th in the nation. Dirksen and Coyle also were selected to participate in the 2012 IWLCA/Under Armour North-South Senior All-Star Game on Saturday, June 16. The annual North-South game will be held at the United Sports Training Center in Downingtown. The NCAA Division III game will take place at 2 p.m., following the Division I (noon) and Division II (1 p.m.) contests.

West Chester University sophomore defender Liz Wilson (Abington) is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Wilson, majoring in communicative disorders, currently carries a 3.901 GPA. She was presented with the award before West Chester’s semifinal contest against Rollins College on Thursday morning at Bellarmine University’s Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships. Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years at their school. They must be active member of the team.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SOFTBALL
Penn State Abington junior Rebecca Patenaude (North Penn) and freshman Tiffany Sipler (Upper Moreland) were named to the Spring 2012 Director’s List for boasting a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall semester.

Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) was 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI in Kutztown University’s 8-2 loss to No. 1 Valdosta State University in a semifinal game of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship on Saturday. The Golden Bears’ 2012 season included making its first appearance to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship, setting a program record with 52 wins, a 33-game winning streak and reaching second in the NFCA Top 25 national poll, the highest mark in school history. KU finished the season ranked third in the final NFCA poll. In Friday’s 3-1 quarterfinal loss to Valdosta State, Hannum accounted for KU’s only run with a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
University of Maryland junior Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was named to the 2012 All-ACC Academic Swimming and Diving Team. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 GPA for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during their academic career.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Eric Wolfe (Central Bucks South)
is part of Shippensburg’s 4x400 relay team that posted a 2011-12 NCAA Outdoor Provisional Mark with a time of 3:14.18. Shippensburg finished second in the Atlantic Region rankings with 490 rankings points, trailing on the nation’s No. 1 team, St. Augustine’s (by just 11 points).

Sophomore Keith Parker-Washington (Upper Moreland) and freshman Brandon Mercer (North Penn) are members of East Stroudsburg’s 4x100 relay team that earned USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region Team for the 2012 outdoor track and field season.

Brandon Bennett-Green (Cheltenham) was part of Penn State’s 4x400 relay that earned first team All-Big Ten honors.

La Salle’s Nick Crits (Wissahickon) qualified for the 2012 NCAA East Region Preliminary in the 1500-meter with his time of 3:43.99, which was attained at the George Mason Patriot Invitational. That time ranks him 26th in the region.

Gwynedd-Mercy junior Sam Keliojor (Norristown) finished 18th in the 100-meter dash trails on Thursday at the 2012 ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, posting a time of 11.09.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg’s Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) earned All-Region honors in Division II for her performance in the 100-meter hurdles (14.08) at the PSAC Championships, which was a school record. She will make her NCAA championships debut as a competitor in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles. Stuetz broke a 17-year-old school record during prelims at the PSAC championships before improving her time yet again in the finals, ultimately taking the PSAC crown in 1:00.11. The efforts were the first two times in her career that Stuetz finished faster than 61 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.

Gwynedd-Mercy senior Lauren Brown (Pennsbury) established a new program record in the 400-meter dash at the annual Tuppeny Last Chance Meet at Swarthmore College on Monday night, finishing eighth overall with a time of 1:00.24 in her first open 400-meter dash of the season. On Thursday, Brown was part of Gwynedd’s 4x400-meter relay team that finished 22nd at the 2012 ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 4:07.21. Khaliah Darden (Pennsbury) was part of the 4x100 meter relay that finished 12th overall with a time of 49.83.

Ijeoma Iheoma (Council Rock South) was part of Penn State’s 4x400 relay team that earned second team All-Big Ten honors.

Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) earned a spot on the USTFCCCA Division II All-Atlantic Region squad in the shot put after a third place finish with a three-foot personal best throw of 43-11.75 at the PSAC Championships. On Tuesday, Moses was selected for the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw event. Moses used a last chance meet to earn her trip to the NCAA Championships. Her first place mark of 182-1 at the Gator Track & Field Invitational (Allegheny College) was exactly what she needed to earn a spot in the field. She is ranked 11th heading into the NCAA meet.

Elizabethtown freshman Ashley Underkofler (Central Bucks South) set a new personal record in the 800-meter dash at Monday night’s Tuppeny Twilight Last Chance Meet at Swarthmore College, posting a time of 2:21.17 for a PR by 0.66 seconds. She remains eighth all-time in school history with that time.
