BASEBALL
IUP junior Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) earned numerous postseason awards for his performance in the 2012 season. He was named to the 2012 Daktronics NCAA Division II Atlantic Region first team, and he was named to the 2012 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II All-Atlantic Region second team. He also was selected to the 2012 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Atlantic Region second team. Zinsmeister started all 49 games and hit .326 while setting career highs with six triples, nine homeruns and 39 RBIs. Leading the team with a .617 slugging percentage from his leadoff spot, Zinsmeister led the PSAC and was 15th in the nation with 57 runs scored after the regular season while also placing second in the conference with 25 steals. He led the Crimson Hawks with 57 hits. He had 12 doubles and a team-high six triples on the season, reaching base another 30 times via the walk as he compiled a .439 on-base percentage. He had 17 multi-hit games during the year and had a nine-game hitting streak in which he batted .471 with a .794 slugging percentage, driving in 11 runs. Zinsmeister also earned first team All-PSAC West honors at shortstop. It was his first all-conference award.
St. Joseph’s freshman Ryan Pater (Central Bucks East) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. Pater took over a starting job in the outfield for conference play and served as a catalyst at the top of the lineup. The CB East grad led the team in batting average with a .279 mark, and his .384 on-base percentage and 11 stolen bases were the top marks on the squad as well. Pater also was chosen as the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player of the Week on May 8.
La Salle freshman Mike McLeod (Harry S Truman) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. The freshman pitcher was a valuable addition to the bullpen, going 3-1 with one save and a 4.17 ERA. He appeared in 25 games, the most on the team, and ninth in school history. The righthander struck out 27 batters in 36.2 innings.
Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) threw a scoreless inning and a third to earn the win in Rhode Island’s 6-5 come-from-behind win over the University of Massachusetts in Wednesday’s elimination game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Rhode Island saw its season end when it fell to St. Joseph’s 3-0 in Friday’s elimination game. Bradstreet absorbed the loss.
Chestnut Hill senior leftfielder Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) was recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) as a Second Team Rawlings Gold Glove selection for the NCAA Division II East Region. Latchum started 40 games in the Griffin outfield, primarily manning left field with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. The 2012 Chestnut Hill College Baseball Coach’s Award winner, Latchum’s value was felt both at the plate and in the field. Latchum totaled three assists from the outfield in addition to finishing among the CACC top fielders with his 1.000 fielding percentage. At the plate, Latchum sported a .279 (43-for-154) batting average and a .397 on-base percentage as the Griffins leadoff batter. He recorded 27 walks, 15 stolen bases (15-for-17, .882), and 52 total bases en route to totaling 29 runs and 12 RBIs. Latchum is tied for the most games played in program history (155) while currently standing as the Griffins all-time leader in walks (87). He ranks second all-time in at-bats (544), runs (112), doubles (24) and sacrifices (18). Each member of the All Region Gold Glove Team is eligible for NCAA Division II Rawlings All-American Gold Glove consideration.
Senior Mike Franklin (Souderton) tossed a scoreless inning in Penn State’s 12-3 season-ending loss to Nebraska in the Nittany Lions’ second game of the Big Ten Tournament. Franklin did not allow a hit and struck out one.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) scored a goal in Syracuse University’s 8-6 loss to Northwestern in the 2012 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship final game on Sunday. The Orange, playing in the national title game for the first time in school history, finished the year with a 19-4 record. Syracuse won a school record 15 consecutive games in 2012 on its way to a single season record 19 wins. Syracuse won the BIG EAST regular season title, going undefeated in the league for the second time in school history. The Orange advanced to the title game by rallying from a seven-goal deficit to defeat No. 1 Florida 14-13 in the national semifinals on Friday. The Orange knotted the score 13-13 with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, setting the stage for overtime. They won it 58 seconds into the second overtime.
Messiah seniors Rachel Dirksen (Abington) and Rachel Coyle (Souderton) became
the first Falcons’ players to ever be honored as First and Second Team All-Americans. Dirksen’s recognition as a First Team All-American is a culmination of the most awarded individual career in the program’s history. Last week, Dirksen earned her second straight First Team All-Metro Region award. She was a four-time First Team All-MAC honoree and was also named the MAC Scholar Athlete for women’s lacrosse this season. In 2012, Dirksen placed in the top 30 in the nation with 105 total points (17th), 73 goals scored (21st) and 5.53 points per game (29th). Coyle became the first player in program history to be named a Second Team All-American following another outstanding campaign in 2012. Considered one of the most complete and effective players in her position across the nation, Coyle led the Falcons this season with 52 groundballs and 37 caused turnovers. Her 2.18 caused turnovers per game average ranked 27th in the nation. Coyle also was elected to her second straight First Team All-Region team last week.
IUP senior Stephanie Bianco (Upper Merion) was named to the 2012 IWLCA All-South Region second team. It was the first all-region honor for the senior midfielder who was named second team All-PSAC a few weeks ago. Bianco did a little bit of everything for the Crimson Hawks, leading the team with a school-record 92 draw controls and finishing third with 41 goals, adding 37 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Bianco’s 5.41 draw controls per game this year was third in the PSAC and 10th in the nation after the regular season as she collected at least six in a game eight times, including a 10-draw game against Queens.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Elizabethtown senior Chris Niles (Central Bucks South) was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Sportsmanship Team. The honor is given to a player from each conference school who has demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season. The players are selected by the players and coaches from their respective schools.
La Salle junior Nick Crits (Wissahickon) competed in the 1500 meter race at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Region Preliminary on Thursday at the University of North Florida. With just 10 meters to go, Crits was in fourth before being edged out of the final qualifying spot. He finished sixth in his heat with a time of 4:05.92, just missing qualifying for the next round by four-hundredths of a second. The top five in each heat moved on to the next round.
Brandon Bennett-Green (Cheltenham) was part of Penn State’s 4x400 relay team that blitzed to a school record 3:03.57 on their way to an NCAA-qualifying performance during the final day of action at the NCAA Eastern Preliminary on Saturday at the University of North Florida. It was the second fastest time of the evening. With the effort, the foursome bettered the previous school record of 3:04.78. The Nittany Lions will now move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 6-9 at Drake University.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Lock Haven senior Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) finished 13th overall with a hammer throw of 168-1 at the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Colorado State on Thursday.
