On Thursday, May 17, 2012, Norristown senior Shane Springer was recognized at a news conference for signing a letter of intent to wrestle at Rider University.
Shane Springer – Rider University (Wrestling)
Major: Chemistry
Final list of colleges: Rider, American International, East Stroudsburg, Hofstra
Reasons for choosing Rider: “When you go somewhere and can see yourself there – it was one of those things. I was there, and I felt like I belonged there. That’s where I wanted to be.”
What was the progression that led you to wrestling at the collegiate level? “My dad always wanted me to wrestle in college because I could get a scholarship and hopefully get a free or almost free education. My freshman year I thought wrestling in college would be this whole terrible thing and really tough, but as I got closer to my senior year, I saw other kids I knew going on to wrestle in college. I thought, ‘All right, I’ll see what it’s like.’ Eventually, it was like – I’m going to college for wrestling because I want the competition.”
Coach Mark Harner says: “Shane started wrestling when he was five years old with the youth program. What really makes him good is his love for the sport. Obviously, he’s uniquely talented, but it’s his love for the sport that sets him apart. It’s work for other kids, but it’s enjoyable to him.
“As a wrestler, he’s somewhat unorthodox, but he’s got very good balance. He’d be the first to tell you he’s not very quick, but it’s his balance and his power that make him a good wrestler. He has the state record for pins, and I think he had that in his mind since his first high school match.”
