BASEBALL
IUP junior Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) has been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-American third team for NCAA Division II. It was announced on Wednesday evening by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The junior shortstop is a math education major with a 3.73 cumulative GPA. He started all 49 games for the Crimson Hawks this season and hit .326. Zinsmeister set career highs with six triples, nine homeruns and 39 RBIs this year. He led the PSAC and was 15th in the nation with 57 runs scored, was second in the conference with 25 stolen bases and led the team with 57 hits. Zinsmeister also earned Capital One Academic All-District first team, all-region honors by Daktronics, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association as well as first team All-PSAC Western Division. Zinsmeister had 17 multi-hit games during the year and had a nine-game hitting streak in which he batted .471 with a .794 slugging percentage, driving in 11 runs. The 2012 Capital One All-Academic Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
West Virginia freshman Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) will play summer league baseball for the Front Royal Cardinals in the Valley Baseball League.
FOOTBALL
Ursinus freshman Josh Williams (Central Bucks South) was named the team’s Outstanding Freshman Offensive Performer at the awards banquet on April 28.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Five SOL alums – Samantha Hurley (Council Rock South), Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton), Melinda Wojt (Souderton), Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) and Kelly Hamilton (Central Bucks South) – were members of the Lock Haven lacrosse team that was ranked No. 11 in the final IWLCA National Poll for the 2012 season. Lock Haven went 11-6 this past season, and the Lady Eagles were 9-2 in the PSAC play. The Haven won the PSAC regular season crown and advanced to the conference semifinals.
Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) was part of a Syracuse squad that finished second in the final IWLCA poll after advancing to the national championship game for the first time in school history. It marks the Orange’s highest ranking in the final poll since the program began in 1998. Prior to this season, Syracuse’s best finish in the final rankings was No. 4 in both 2008 and 2010. The Orange posted a record of 19-4 in 2012, setting a single-season record for wins. Syracuse won a school-record 15 consecutive games and went undefeated in BIG EAST play during the regular season for the second time in program history.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg junior Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) competed in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships hosted by Colorado State University. She ended up just one spot shy of All-America honors after a ninth-place finish in 1:02.48. Stuetz finishes her junior season as the PSAC champion in all three of the hurdle events (indoor 60, outdoor 100 and outdoor 400) in addition to having established the new SU record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.11.
