On Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, Souderton senior Cory Capaldi was recognized for signing a letter of intent to play baseball at George Mason University.
Cory Capaldi – George Mason University (Baseball)
Major: Athletic Training
Final list of colleges: George Mason, La Salle, Temple
Reasons for choosing George Mason: “It was different from the other schools in the fact that it had the major I wanted to pursue and a great baseball program with a chance to start right away.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate baseball? “I started thinking about playing in college my sophomore year. Age wasn’t an excuse anymore, and that’s when everything started going to the next level.
“My first contact was an e-mail my sophomore year, and the first calls came July 1 before my senior year. That’s when the floodgates opened.”
Coach Mike Childs says: “Cory was my first kid ever brought up as a freshman to play varsity. He had the talent then, and ever since day one when we brought up, he has worked hard. He’s probably one of the hardest working kids I have ever seen – on the field, off the field, motivating other kids. He’s definitely deserving of this.
“I have friends who live near the VFW Field and the cages there, and at 9:30 on a Saturday night, you’re hearing someone hitting, and it’s like, ‘Oh, Cory Capaldi must be over there.’ To have that commitment as a high school kid to be hitting with his dad on a Saturday night, it just shows how hard a worker he is and how great a kid he is.”
