On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, Wissahickon seniors Anne Marie Devlin and Clare Uhle were recognized at a special news conference for signing letters of intent to play tennis at the collegiate level.
Anne Marie Devlin – St. Joseph’s University (Tennis)
Major: Biology
Final list of colleges: St. Joe’s, Duquesne, Washington College
Reasons for choosing St. Joe’s: “It’s such a beautiful campus, and it’s a great program. I’m familiar with several of the girls on the team, and I just had a connection with (the school). My coach at the club taught several girls on the team, so I really had a great feeling about it.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate tennis? “I always hoped to play in college. My mom played in college at La Salle, and she coached my high school team. It’s always been in my family, so it was always a hope of mine to do it. I’m glad it’s coming true.”
Coach Mary Ellen Devlin says: “Anne Marie was always a hard working and unassuming player. She was a strong doubles player coming in, and when she moved to singles, she became a very solid calculating, tactical player. Part of it is just mental, and being a captain and player means playing big points well.
“One of the things I’m going to miss about Anne Marie is that she really enjoyed the team aspect of the sport, and that’s why I’m optimistic about her college experience because it’s so much about a group, not a single player. She grasps that and really enjoyed it and was not only a strong player in that regard but a strong leader. In a group of girls that was very accomplished, she stood out in that respect, and that’s not easy to do in tennis.”

Reasons for choosing Northern Colorado: “I really liked the team environment and how close everybody was, and there was just a lot of energy. It was like a family, and it looked like something I wanted to be part of.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate tennis? “I’ve always wanted to played tennis in college. The recruiting started back in ninth and 10th grades - getting e-mails, playing in tournaments and meeting some coaches.”
