MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Freshman Sam Brooks (Wissahickon) finished 94th with a time of 23:10 for Elizabethtown in the Galen Piper Cross Country Challenge on Saturday in Shippensburg.
Senior Sam Stortz (Upper Dublin) finished 15th overall with a time of 30:00.99 to help lead Ursinus to a sixth place finish at the Delaware Valley Invitational on Saturday.
James Rogers (Cheltenham) finished among the top 20 runners in Gwynedd-Mercy’s second place finish at the Marywood Invitational on Saturday.
Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) placed second among scoring runners to pace the Penn State Abington cross country team during its season-opening meet at the SUNYIT Wildcat Invitational Saturday. Kane ran the course in a time of 20:03.09, setting a new school record and was only 10 seconds behind SUNIT’s Derek Struck, who won the race in a course-record time of 19:53.3. Teammate Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) finished 18th among scoring runners with a time of 21:14. The Nittany Lions placed sixth at the meet.
Junior Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished third with a time of 18:36 to help lead Penn State to the win at the Dolan Duals on Friday. Sophomore Chris Campbell (Council Rock North) was the Lions’ number four and also finished under 19:00 with a time of 18:55, which was good enough for seventh overall.
Widener junior Michael Quinn (Plymouth Whitemarsh) took first place with a time of 16:44.14 to lead Widener to a first place finish at Friday’s Misericordia Invitational.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Ashley Underkofler (Central Bucks South) finished 33rd with a time of 16:32 in Saturday’s Galen Piper Cross Country Challenge at Shippensburg for No. 20 Elizabethtown. Teammate Alyssa Korn (Abington) gave the Blue Jays eight runners in the top half of the field with a 52nd place run, posting a time of 17:13.
Shippensburg freshman Gabby Brackett (Bensalem) finished 44th with a time of 17:00.
Lauren Bond (North Penn) placed 13th with a time of 19:11 to helped lead Bloomsburg to a first place victory at the Bison Open at Bucknell University on Friday night.
Sophomore Courtney Miller (Wissahickon) contributed to the scoring in Gwynedd-Mercy’s third place finish at the Marywood Invitational on Saturday.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in the University of Scranton’s 4-0 win over Marywood on Saturday. On Friday, Kempf scored her team’s only goal in Scranton’s 2-1 overtime loss to Muhlenberg.
Junior Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) scored two goals to lead La Salle to a 4-3 win at Pacific last Sunday. Senior Becca Chylack (Souderton) contributed an assist.
Junior Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 3-2 loss to Misericorida on Friday.
Sophomore Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) had three saves to earn her first collegiate victory in The College of New Jersey’s 5-3 win at Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday.
Quinnipiac junior Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) was named the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week after leading the Bobcats to their first 2-0 start in the program’s Division I history. Taylor had an outstanding weekend for the Bobcats, who defeated Holy Cross 1-0 on Friday, Aug. 24, and Towson 3-1 on Aug. 26. Taylor factored in all four goals the Bobcats put on the board for the week. Taylor scored her first career goal in the 1-0 win over Holy Cross in the first game of the 2012 season. Taylor then had a four-point game, scoring once and assisting on two more goals in a 3-1 win against Towson.
Freshman Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) scored her team's only goal in Delaware Valley's 3-1 loss to St. Mary's College on Friday in its season opener.
Senior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) scored on a rebound of a goalie save to give Rider a 1-0 lead 15:39 into the Broncos 5-1 win over Colgate on Sunday. It was the 28th goal of her career.
FOOTBALL
Pete Panichi (Upper Merion) ran for 137 yards in Lebanon Valley’s 31-21 win over Montclair State on Saturday.
Kevin Morton (Abington) set the school record for career touchdown passes, finishing the day with six to run his career total to 91 in 12th-ranked Kutztown’s 58-6 win over Saint Anselm in Saturday’s season opener. KU also set a school record for total yardage with 723 yards of total offense. Morton finished 31-of-45 for 406 yards passing and six touchdowns and rushed for 33 yards and another score as he accounted for seven of the team’s eight scores. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) hauled in a 45-yard scoring strike to take the Golden Bears to a 14-0 lead. Mastromatto had 65 yards rushing and 78 receiving in the game and scored twice. He caught seven passes. Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) had four tackles.
Junior Mike Goode (Norristown) had a team high eight tackles in Shippensburg’s 38-28 win over No. 19 Shepherd on Saturday. Junior Mike Schmidt (Harry S Truman) contributed a big sack on a fourth down play that stymied the final Ram drive of the game.
Freshman kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) connected on a 32-yard field goal with 6:37 remaining in the third period to tie the score in Ursinus College’s come-from-behind 24-20 win over The College of New Jersey on Friday night. Josh Williams (Central Bucks South) made his first career start and recorded three catches for 37 yards.
Senior defensive back Anthony Robey (Norristown) broke up a pass play to preseason All-America WR Norman White in Temple’s 35-10 win over Villanova in Friday night’s Mayor’s Cup game at Lincoln Financial Field in front of 32,709. It was the third largest crowd to watch a Temple game at the venue and the most in the four Mayor’s Cup 
games. Brandon McManus (North Penn) connected on a pair of fourth quarter field goals, the 47th and 48th of his career to become the all-time leader in field goals at Temple.
Sophomore John Sibel (Pennsbury) had six catches for a team-high 55 yards in Lycoming College’s 24-2 loss to the College at Brockport on Saturday.
Myron Myles (Wissahickon), playing in his first collegiate football game, rushed for 93 yards on 18 carries in Millersville’s 41-17 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Included in his carries was a 25-yard touchdown run with 2:18 left on the clock. Teammate Jake Allen (Pennsbury) recovered a fumble while Jamie Thomas (Plymouth Whitemarsh) led the team with eight tackles. Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) had one sack. Last season West Virginia Wesleyan defeated Millersville 55-3.
MEN’S SOCCER
Senior Julian Ward (Abington) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 2-1 overtime win over Cairn University on Saturday.
Junior Anthony Manero (Council Rock North) scored perhaps the biggest goal of his career on Saturday when he connected on a header in overtime off a cross from Miguel Diaz (Central Bucks East), propelling Bloomsburg to a 3-2 win over Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday in the NYACK Tournament. Fellow defender and senior co-captain John Owens (Central Bucks East) scored the first goal of his career and the first BU goal of the season in the 20th minute to give Bloomsburg the early lead.
La Salle freshman Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) was named the Atlantic 10’s first Rookie of the Week of the 2012 season last week. He also was voted La Salle’s ‘Student-Athlete of the Week.’ Farrell made a splash in his collegiate debut against Drexel last Saturday, netting the game-winning goal just 45 seconds into overtime as the Explorers came from behind to defeat the Dragons in Soccer Six action. Down 2-1 with under a minute left in regulation, Farrell also recorded his first collegiate assist when he found teammate Mike Stanton near the net for the game-tying goal with just 36 seconds remaining.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Elizabethtown’s 2-1 win over Lasell on Sunday.
Redshirt senior Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) notched her first shutout of the 2012 season on Friday, collecting two saves in Temple’s 1-0 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday in the Owls’ home opener.
Goalkeeper Gabby Pakhtigian (North Penn) made eight saves in La Salle’s 3-0 loss to No. 20 Portland on Sunday in the Husky/Nike Invitational.
Ashley Saylor (Central Bucks South) scored a goal and registered an assist in West Chester’s 4-0 win over Philadelphia University on Saturday. In Thursday’s 6-0 win over Chestnut Hill, Saylor registered a career-high five points, contributing two goals – the second on a penalty kick – and one assist. Cara Deola (Council Rock South) contributed an assist on Saylor’s first goal. Carly Yost (North Penn) and Diana Rowan (Neshaminy) each scored single goals.
Sophomore forward Lauren Buchanan-Dwyer (Central Bucks South) scored the game-tying goal with 1:28 remaining in regulation as East Stroudsburg rallied to secure a 1-1 (2OT) tie against Concord in the Warriors’ season opener on Saturday.
Alicia Roberts (Upper Moreland) scored a goal to lead Wilkes University to a 2-1 win over Muhlenberg College on Friday.
Freshman Megan Kelley (North Penn) made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut. Kelley assisted on the first goal of the game and tallied the game winner in Millersville’s 4-1 win over Wilmington on Thursday. In Saturday’s 3-2 overtime win over Chestnut Hill, Kelley led the Marauders’ offense with five shots and four on the frame.
Ashley Schoellkopf (Pennridge) played the last 11 minutes of IUP’s 2-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday. The former Pennridge standout was credited with one save. Wheeling Jesuit had just one shot in the second half of play. In Thursday’s 6-0 win over Seton Hill, Schoellkopf notched a save in 16 minutes on the field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) was credited with one save in Penn State Abington’s 3-1 come-from-behind win over Rosemont on Friday. In Penn State Abington’s 1-0 win over Cairn University, Benedict saved the lone shot sent her way.
Gwynedd-Mercy’s Michelle Pool (North Penn) was named to the all-tournament team at Saturday’s 2012 Crusader Classic hosted by Alvernia.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 9-0 win over Cairn on Friday. She also was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-1 win.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Sophomore Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) led the offense with 18 kills in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-0 win over Penn State-Berks on Saturday.
Kate Schalck (William Tennent) had six kills in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 loss to Arcadia University on Friday night. Ann Cheshinski (Neshaminy) added a kill and combined with teammate Abby Millan for 11 assists.
Freshman defensive specialist Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) contributed two aces and 14 digs in Chestnut Hill’s 3-2 loss to Pace University. She also sparked the team in its 3-0 win over Kentucky State University.
Senior outside hitter JeanAnneCarey (Pennsbury) contributed five kills, four digs and three aces in Moravian’s 3-0 win over King’s College in the10th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational on Friday. She had a team best four aces in Moravian’s 3-1 win over Alvernia later that day. On Saturday, Carey delivered two aces, two kills and a dig in Moravian’s 3-1 win over Centenary College. Later in the day, Carey tallied seven kills, five digs and three aces.
Mara Berzins (Pennridge) had three blocks in Ursinus College’s 3-1 win over Alvernia at the Greyhound Premiere Classic on Saturday.
University of Connecticut sophomore outside hitter Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named to the All-Tournament Team at this weekend’s UConn Classic. Maugle was the team’s leading attacker with 36 kills, a .245 kill percentage and a pair of double-doubles.
