SOL Boys/Girls Soccer Wrap (9-4-12)

Check out the results of SOL soccer teams in action on Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER

Central Bucks East 2, Wissahickon 1 (OT)
In a classic battle of SOL powers, the Patriots used a goal by Kyle Clow (Ben Marks assist) in the 87th minute of play to eke out the hard-fought win. Earlier in the game, it was Marks turning an assist from teammate Mark Philipson into a goal in the 22nd minute to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans rallied to knot the score when Matt Knittle scored in the 68th minute, setting the stage for overtime.
Exactly how evenly matched the two teams were on Tuesday night is underscored by the fact that both squads took eight shots. The keepers for both sides – East’s Jacob Nesturek and Wissahickon’s Neal Guaglianone and John Carrazzo – were credited with three goals.
East is 1-0 on the young season while Wissahickon evened its record at 1-1.

PENNRIDGE 0, HAVERFORD 0 (2 OT)
Both teams had plenty of opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but the superb play of keepers Zack Jarrett and Sebastian Stelmach forced the two squads to settle for a 0-0 tie.
For the Rams, Jarrett turned away all 10 shots he faced.
“He played really well,” coach Pete Valimont said.
Stelmach also was equal to the task, turning away 12 shots for the Fords.

GIRLS SOCCER

Council Rock North 2, Archbishop Wood 1
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Indians answered with a pair of second half goals, the first by Adrianne Rosario (Nicole Moonan assist) and the second by sophomore Michaela Finnyfrock. Rosario had the assist on Finnyfrock’s game winner, which came in the 77th minute.

Wissahickon 2, Christopher Dock 1
The Trojans and Pioneers battled to a 0-0 halftime tie, but senior Cailin Grey put the Trojans on the scoreboard when she scored on a breakaway from just inside the 18. With just under four minutes to play in regulation, Dock knotted the score, but the Trojans answered when Grey connected for her second goal of the night, capitalizing on a free kick from beyond the 18 with 40 seconds remaining for the 2-1 win.
The Pioneers held an 11-5 edge in shots, but that advantage was negated by the 10-save effort in goal of Rachel Stone.
According to coach Shannon Creamer-Franke, a change in the line to give the team more speed in back made a noticeable difference. The Trojans’ starting backs were Meredith Brown, Sammi Silar, Laura Frankenfield and Anna Chiodo-Ortiz, and according to the Trojans’ coach, Ellen-Claire Benbow, a returning starter, worked well with newcomer Liz Gregorio in the midfield.
“Haruko Arango-Kautz, with fresh legs from the bench, proved to be a force to be reckoned with,” Creamer-Franke said. “In the second half, top side, sophomore Meghan Guzewicz held strong, making a difference.”

Quakertown 4, Springfield (Montco) 1
The Panthers continued their early-season offensive onslaught, connecting for four goals to bring their total to nine after just two games. Linzi Wolfe (Shelly Cowan assist) got the ball rolling with a goal in the fourth minute, and then it was Shannon Gibat scoring with a Wolfe assist. Wolfe’s second goal of the game – this one with an assist from Emily Galluppi – sent the Panthers into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, Gibat and Molly Fitzpatrick both scored unassisted goals for the 5-0 final.
Coach Michael Koch credited Devin Reed, Emily Galluppi and Jenna Joseph for their outstanding defensive performances in the win.
