MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East)
finished 13th with a time of 30:03.0 at the Highlander Invitational on Saturday while Penn State Abington teammate Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) finished 14th with a time of 30:55.0. Penn State Abington finished third out of 12 teams at the meet.

Penn State junior Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished 15th with a time of 26:36 at Saturday’s Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational. The Nittany Lions finished third overall in the team standings.

Widener junior Michael Quinn (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named Middle Atlantic Conference Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week last week. Quinn was victorious at the season-opening Misericordia Invitational, posting a time of 16:44.14 and allowing the Pride to finish first as the squad boasted five of the top 12 finishers.

Quinn finished 13th at Saturday’s Wilmington Invitational with a time of 30:54.44. The Pride finished second overall with 64 points, trailing only Wilmington, and first among Division III schools.

FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) contributed an assist in Delaware Valley’s 5-1 non-conference win over Neumann University on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to Arcadia, Pritchett contributed an assist on her team’s only goal.

Junior Annie Abdo (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in No. 8 Penn State’s 3-2 overtime loss to Princeton on Thursday night.

Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) was credited with four saves in goal in Princeton’s 3-2 win over Penn State.

Senior Taylor McGarvey (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in Cabrini’s 3-2 loss to Drew University in the final game of the Drew University Fall Festival last Sunday.

Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) scored the game-winning goal in Quinnipiac’s 2-1 win over Vermont on Sunday.

Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) played the entire second half in goal in eighth-ranked IUP’s 2-1 win over Millersville on Saturday. In IUP’s 6-2 win over Mercyhurst in Wednesday’s PSAC opener, Casey McGowan (Central Bucks South) converted a penalty stroke into a goal. Varacallo played the second half in the cage and had four saves.

Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist in Lebanon Valley’s 3-1 loss to Haverford on Thursday.

Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in the University of Scranton’s 4-2 win over Misericordia on Wednesday.

Freshman Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) tallied five points in Villanova’s 3-2 win over La Salle on Wednesday night. Kenney had a hand in all three goals, scoring twice and assisting on the other. Kenney scored on a rebound of a goalie save of her own shot with time winding down for the game winner. In Friday night’s 2-1 win over St. Francis, Kenney connected for a goal that turned out to be the game winner.

In La Salle’s 3-2 loss to Villanova, senior Becca Chylack (Souderton) scored a goal on a corner that gave the Explorers a 1-0 lead. The goal was the 22nd of Chylack’s career, moving her into a tie for ninth place on La Salle’s all-time list. She also is eighth all-time in points (57).

Senior captain Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in No. 18 Drexel’s 3-2 overtime win against No. 22 California on Friday night at California’s Maxell Family Field. In Wednesday’s 6-0 win over UC Davis, Fleischut opened the game with an unassisted goal.

Junior Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) scored three goals, the final coming with 6:49 remaining to help lift Gwynedd-Mercy to a 3-2 win at Widener on Thursday night. Senior Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) assisted on one of her goals. In the Griffins’ 4-3 win over Susquehanna on Tuesday, freshman Katie O’Neill (Council Rock North) scored her first collegiate goal. Gorenflo also contributed a goal.

MaryKate McCrea (Central Bucks Wast) was credited with an assist in Ursinus College's 2-1 loss to Moravian on Thursday.

FOOTBALL
Pete Panichi (Upper Merion)
had a team high 73 yards rushing in Lebanon Valley’s 47-7 win over Misericordia on Saturday.

Sophomore Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had 57 yards on 14 carries in Lebanon Valley’s 22-14 win over No. 22 Delaware Valley on Saturday. Sophomore John Sibel (Pennsbury) led the receivers with four catches for 37 yards, including a pair of catches on a scoring drive that gave the Warriors a 10-point lead.

Kutztown University’s Kevin Morton (Abington) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Co-Offensive Player of the Week as well as the NCAA.com Division II Offensive Player of the Week and the D2Football.com Player of the Week after a record-setting performance in a 58-6 season opening win over Saint Anselm. The senior quarterback set the school record for career touchdown passes, finishing his day with a career total of 91. Morton was 31-of-45 in the win for 406 yards passing and six touchdowns. He also rushed for 33 yards and another score as he accounted for seven of his team’s eight scores. Kutztown also eclipsed the school record for total yardage with 723 yards of total offense in the game. Kutztown is currently ranked 15th by D2Football.com and 11th in the American Football Coaches Association Division II Top 25.

Morton continued his strong play in Kutztown’s 48-45 loss to No. 10 California on Saturday, throwing for 359 yards and four touchdowns. California scored the game’s first 27 points before the Golden Bears reeled off 38 straight to take a 38-27 lead in the third quarter after a 10-yard scoring strike from Morton. Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) had nine tackles and recovered a fumble.

Jake Metz (Souderton) returned an interception of a screen pass into a touchdown in Shippensburg’s 55-35 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday. Sophomore Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass that put the Raiders on top 41-14 at halftime. Sophomore linebacker James Brennan (Upper Merion) recorded a sack.

Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) had 11 tackles, a half sack and two tackles for a loss in Millersville’s 45-7 loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday night.

Redshirt sophomore cornerback Andrew Coyle (Souderton) made his first career start in East Stroudsburg’s 31-0 shutout of Lock Haven on Saturday. A total of 16 of the 44 Warriors who played on Saturday night saw their first career action. ESU recognized two members of its football family, including Derek Brown (Souderton), with a moment of silence before the national anthem. Brown died on July 5 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on June 30. A sophomore linebacker and starter on last year’s team, Brown was the second member of his family to play for ESU. Matt Brown was a four-year letter winner at tight end and graduated in 2011.

Temple senior placekicker/punter Brandon McManus (North Penn) has earned Honorable Mention Specialist of the Week honors from the College Football Performance Awards.  In Temple’s 36-27 loss to Maryland on Saturday, McManus nailed field goals of 36 and 40 yards to extend his school career record for field goals made to 50. His 40-yard field goal in the fourth quarter is his longest so far this season. McManus, who punted five times for 239 yards, improved his career punting average to 45.8 (55 punts and 2,521 yards). McManus also kicked off seven times for 448 yards (64.0 average) with five touchbacks. He has made 58 consecutive extra points. He is one of eight current players in the country who handle all kicking duties. On the career charts, McManus is No. 2 in scoring with 284 points. He needs only 40 points to catch Bernard Pierce, who holds the career record with 324 points scored.

Sean Baner (William Tennent) was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points and also connected on a 20-yard field goal in Delaware's 38-14 win over Delaware State on Saturday.

MEN’S GOLF
West Chester sophomore Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) shot a 72 and finished in a tie for fourth place with a pair of golfers after the first round of the Senator Shootout at the Lakeview Resort last Monday. The Golden Rams shot a 298 and found themselves in third place after the first day. Slawter finished with a 151 for the two-day event after carding a 79 on Tuesday. The Golden Rams shot a 601 for the 36-hole tournament and finished fourth as a team.

Michael Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) carded a 75 (+4) in the first round of the Navy Fall Classic in Annapolis on Saturday. Teammate Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a score of 79 (+8). On Sunday, Johnson fired a team-low 74 (+3) to claim team-low honors by a single point. His two-day total was 149 (+7), which placed him in a tie for 28th. Goodreds carded a 77 (+6) on Sunday for a two-day score of 156 (+14) to tie for 59th. As a team, La Salle shot 306 (+22) to finish in 11th place out of 15 teams. Johnson returns to the Explorers after a summer where he qualified for the US Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. He also qualified for the GAP Open Championship, which was held at Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey.

WOMEN'S GOLF
Jordan Glatt of Middlebury College (CB East) shot a 77 to earn an individual 6th place at the Saint Lawrence University Invitational Golf Tournament in Canton, NY on September 9th.  The Middlebury Team took home First Place out of the 9 teams participating.  The best four individual scores on the team set a round record for the event with a combined score of 314.

 

MEN’S SOCCER
Senior Julian Ward (Abington) notched his second goal of the season in Penn State Abington’s 2-1 overtime win over Keuka College on Saturday.

Eastern University’s Sean Bonner was named to the all-tournament team at this weekend’s Eagle Road Classic. The Eagles took home the tournament title with a 2-0 win over Wesley College on Saturday. Eastern coach Mark Wagner acknowledged the strong play of Bonner, noting that he continued to improve as the tournament progressed.

Sean Peckham (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist on Lafayette’s lone goal in the Leopards 3-1 loss to Quinnipiac last Sunday.

Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) connected on a first half penalty kick to lift Bloomsburg to a 1-0 win over Pitt Johnstown on Friday night. Miller scored in the 26th minute, kicking the ball into the top left corner of the net. He ended the game with three shots.

Sophomore forward Wesley Fossile (North Penn) contributed an assist on his team’s only goal in East Stroudsburg’s 2-1 loss to Davis & Elkins on Saturday.

Sophomore Troy Czapor (Council Rock South) scored a pair of goals in Widener’s 6-1 win over D’Youville on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Ursinus, Czapor had the assist on a goal by senior Drew Hilinski (Pennridge).

Senior goalkeeper Andrew Foran (Council Rock South) earned his first start of the season and made three saves in Shippensburg’s 3-2 loss at the District of Columbia. He was forced to leave the game 21 minutes in after getting injured.

La Salle freshman Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) was tabbed Rookie of the Week in the first Philadelphia Soccer Six awards of the season last Tuesday. Farrell ranked second on the team with four points on one goal and a team-high two assists. He scored the game winner 45 seconds into overtime in La Salle’s 3-2 win over Drexel in his collegiate debut. He also assisted on the game-tying goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation to send the contest into OT. Farrell also added another assist on the insurance goal in La Salle’s 2-0 blanking of Mount St. Mary’s.

Farrell scored the tying goal in La Salle’s 1-1 tie in double overtime against Lafayette on Sunday. Farrell took the rebound of a teammate’s shot and chipped the ball in the net to get the Explorers on the board.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) delivered a ball into the box that teammate Laura Wingert turned into a goal in Elizabethtown’s 2-1 win over Lasell in the championship game of the Lasell College Kick-Off Tournament last Sunday.

Freshman midfielder Cindy Wade (Abington) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 4-2 loss to Keuka College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Cabrini, keeper Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) was credited with four saves, including a stop of a penalty kick.

Freshman Chrissy Vollrath (Council Rock South) found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career in La Salle’s 6-2 win over Seton Hall on Friday.

Carly Yost (North Penn) scored her third goal of the year in West Chester’s 3-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit University on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over IUP, the Golden Rams received goals from both Yost and Ashley Saylor (Central Bucks South).  Saylor’s header off the foot of Diana Rowan put the Golden Rams on top for good (2-1) in the 16th minute. Yost scored the game’s third goal off a corner kick from Cara Deola (Council Rock South).  

Freshman Paul Jurewicz (Council Rock South) contributed an assist in Temple’s 1-0 win over Iona on Friday. In last Sunday’s 2-0 loss to the University of Pennsylvania, redshirt senior Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) recorded eight saves, five of which came in the first 45 minutes of play.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
Gwynedd-Mercy junior Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) was named to the CSAC Women’s Tennis Honor Roll for the week ending Sept. 4. Fein picked up straight set wins at #1 singles against conference opponent Cairn University and non-conference foe Richard Stockton without giving up a game. She also had two wins at #1 doubles in a 1-1 week for the Griffins.

Fein earned an 8-5 win at first singles in Gwynedd’s 6-3 win over Misericordia on Saturday. She also was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-4 win. In Friday’s 9-0 win over Immaculata in CSAC play, Fein earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles and was part of a first doubles team that earned an 8-0 win.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Sophomore Abbie Keating (Neshaminy) shared the team lead with six kills in Cairn University’s 3-0 loss to Stevenson University in the Stevenson University Invitational. In a 3-1 loss to Mary Washington, Keating had seven kills. In Thursday’s 3-0 sweep of The King’s College from New York City, Keating had six kills. In Tuesday’s sweep of Arcadia, Keating had five service aces and 11 digs.

Franklin and Marshall sophomore Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the Centennial Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 4. The honor was the second in Harvey’s career. Harvey led the Diplomats to a 3-0 record in their opening weekend, including wins against Lancaster Bible, Elizabethtown and Penn State-Berks. Over the course of three matches, Harvey registered 33 kills in eight sets (4.12) with a .455 hitting percentage. She tallied eight kills on 11 swings with no errors in two games against Lancaster Bible and recorded 18 kills in the three-set sweep of Penn State-Berks.

Harvey contributed 11 kills in Franklin and Marshall’s 3-2 loss to Franciscan on Friday at the first day of the Maria French Memorial.

Sophomore setter Leah Brown (William Tennent) had 20 assists and 13 digs in Penn State Abington’s sweep of Rosemont College on Saturday. Sophomore Kate Schalck (William Tennent) had six kills for the Lady Lions, who improved to 3-2 on the season. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Valley Forge Christian Academy, Schalck had six kills. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Cheyney, Brown had 13 assists. In Saturday’s 3-2 loss to McDaniel, Brown finished with a season high 31 assists and 10 digs.

Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) had six kills in Lebanon Valley’s sweep over York at the Dickinson Invitational on Saturday. In a 3-1 loss to Michigan-Dearborn, Godfrey had five kills. In Wednesday’s sweep of Alvernia, Godfrey had eight kills, and in Tuesday’s sweep of Dickinson, Godfrey served for two of her team’s eight aces. She had five kills in Lebanon Valley’s 3-0 win over Penn State Altoona on that same day.

Freshman libero Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) anchored the defense with 15 digs in Chestnut Hill’s 3-1 win over Mercy College on Saturday. In Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 win over Lincoln University (Pa.) on Thursday, Bianchini had 10 digs to lead the Griffins defense. In Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to West Chester, Bianchini recorded 11 digs.

Freshman setter Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) posted 38 assists in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over St. John Fisher at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. By virtue of the win, the Cavaliers qualified for the third place game against Baptist Bible College, which it won in a sweep. Koenig had 39 assists. In Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Moravian College, Koenig had 24 assists, 11 digs and four kills.

University of Connecticut sophomore outside hitter Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was selected to the All-Tournament Team of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational, hosted by Missouri State this weekend. In UConn’s 3-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha, Maugle led all players with 18 kills and 12 digs for her third double-double this season. In UConn’s 3-1 loss to Northern Illinois earlier in the day, Maugle had 19 kills and 11 digs. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Missouri State, Maugle had 12 kills and nine digs. Earlier in the day, Maugle had nine kills in UConn’s 3-0 win over New Orleans in the opening match of the tournament. In Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Hartford, Maugle led the attack with 18 kills on a .368 kill percentage.

Junior middle blocker Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) had three blocks and two kills in Moravian College’s 3-0 win over King’s College on Saturday at the Buttermaker Tournament. Senior outside hitter JeanAnne Carey (Pennsbury) had four kills. In Moravian’s sweep of Neumann on Friday, O’Hara had three kills. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Cabrini, O’Hara had seven kills and three blocks.
