WILLIAM TENNENT 3, BENSALEM 0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-8)
The Panthers benefitted from a standout serving game to take control of Tuesday’s match at Bensalem. CC Weir led the charge with eight aces, and it was the junior libero’s 14-point service run to close out the first set that vaulted the Panthers to the big win.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Weir said. “My favorite part of the game is serving. It gives you a head start on the game.”
The Owls were actually hanging around in the first set until Weir stepped to the line and served them off the court. It was a 10-7 game after Jade DiMichele’s service ace, but that was followed by a Bensalem net serve, and then Weir took over, serving out the set.
Coach Ben Greenland had a spirited talk with his team between games, and the results in the second set were better.
The Owls fell behind 7-2 but rallied to make it a 14-10 game after back-to-back DiMichele ace. It was a 15-12 game after a Tennent passing miscue, but the Panthers got back on track, answering with a 10-2 run to close out the game.
“We’re all kind of learning each other,” said Greenland, who was without setter Alexa Topakas as well we Lexi Hamilton. “This was the first time we ran a 5-1 this season. It’s hard when you have to change formations on the fly, but one of the things we’re trying to build on is consistency, learning how to play at a high level no matter what the circumstances.”
In the third set, some of Tennent’s younger players saw action, and they didn’t miss a beat, opening up a 15-5 lead after a kill by freshman Shealyn Conway. Sophomore Amber Wood delivered a service ace to make it a 21-7 game as the Panthers rolled to the win.
The key to the match, according to Weir, was simple.
“Just always being focused, always being ready for anything that comes over the net,” the junior libero said.
Despite the Owls’ early season struggles, senior Grace Lee is optimistic the team will pull it together.
“Absolutely – hopefully we can win two or three games, and I will end my senior year happy,” she said.
While the Owls fell to 0-2 in league play (0-3 overall), the Panthers evened their league mark at 1-1 (1-3 overall).
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, NORTH PENN 2 (25-21, 26-28, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11)
In arguably the SOL match of the day, the Patriots earned the hard-fought win, handing the Maidens their first loss of the season.
“CB East came out with something to prove tonight against North Penn,” coach Scott Geller said. “We have been working so hard all season, and I knew it was only a matter of time for us to pull off a big win.
“These girls played with a new sense of confidence and drive, and they deserved this tonight. Each and everyone of our girls contributed equally both on and off the court.”
The Patriots were led by the strong serving of Haley Echelmeir (five aces). Both Caroline Davis and Courtney Kauffman had three aces. Laura Kennedy led the Patriots with 27 digs, followed by Haley Echelmeir (17 digs) and Erin Lane (11 digs).
“The strong serves allowed us to play solid and consistent defense, and we played smart volleyball on the offensive front,” Geller said.
Hannah Lunak led East with 16 kills, followed by Kauffman with nine and Lindsay Macintosh with five.
“The rest of the offense was complete with smart attacking from all areas of the court, front and back row,” Geller said. “Rachel Clow, Laura Kennedy, Nicole Krzeminski and Colleen Lane all put up a couple of kills as well to help lead the (us) to victory.”
Caroline Davis recorded 34 assists.
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, SOUDERTON 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-11)
The Bucks were led by the efforts of Rachel Baker (8 kills, 3 aces, 5 digs) and Alicia West (7 kills, 6 aces, 4 digs). Maddie Klun added five kills and three digs, and Jess West added 18 assists.
For the Indians, Alexa Kluka led the way with three stuff blocks and five kills, and Bekah Ford followed with one stuff block and four kills. Cori Watson had 13 assists and three aces, and Grace Pinto led the defense with three digs.
“While usually pretty consistent, the girls lost momentum throughout the match and had trouble communicating on the court,” Souderton coach Marlena Musselman said. “It was a tough loss, but the girls are ready to put it behind them and start fresh on Thursday.”
ABINGTON 3, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 13-25, 15-13)
The Ghosts eked out the important win over the Colonials.
“This match was just like the score – back and forth,” PW coach Michael Nguyen said. “PW played some scrappy defense but could not compete with Abington’s height. When Abington wasn’t blocking volleyballs, they were hitting over the double block. PW fought for every point but, in the end, came up short.”
Carley Cooper led the Ghosts with 10 kills, seven blocks and 11 digs. Liz Gassman added six kills, three blocks and nine digs. Regina Seweryn had six blocks.
Tori Biggins had a big all-around night for the Colonials with seven kills, five aces, 16 assists and eight digs) while Michele Taunton had a team-high nine kills and Hannah Thomas added eight. Riley Hellings had 11 assists and six digs, and Emily Houck had six digs to go along with four kills.
HATBORO-HORSHAM 3, WISSAHICKON 0 (25-10, 25-7, 25-14)
The Hatters’ offense was led by Lauren Laucella with six kills. Sam Jones added five and Lauren Hill had four. According to coach Kathy Tanner, Caitlin Klotzbach and Candyce Riley delivered nearly perfect passing scores. The team contributed 17 aces with Jones, Klotzbach and Laucella each serving four. Hannah Steiger served 16 points and contributed 10 assists while Jones added seven assists.
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, QUAKERTOWN 0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-10)
Abby Mummert served for 12 aces and teammate Lauren Wise added five as the Titans used a strong service game to sweep the Panthers.
“Game one was much closer than the score reflects,” South coach Ulana Keer said. “Quakertown had the lead up until point 16 when we were able to come back and serve with Abby Mummert stepping it up.”
Mummert also had 13 kills and Wise, two kills. Jax Babeski (eight kills), Ally Horvath (four kills), Jackie Haffey (three kills) and Taylor Danilowicz (two kills) also contributed. Madi Conroy and Linsey Edling both had 15 assists. Defensively, the Titans were led by Larissa Keer (10 digs), Jess Berton (seven digs), Cecilia Miller (six digs), Heather Kobrzynski (five digs) and Caitlyn McCrory (four digs).
UPPER DUBLIN 3, NORRISTOWN 1 (12-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-10)
Mary DeCamara paced the Flying Cardinals at the net with three kills while Alyssa Rowely and Taylor D’Ginto each had two aces.
PENNSBURY 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 0 (25-5, 25-17, 25-15)
Taylor McCartney led the Falcons with 12 kills and four digs. The Falcons will travel to Council Rock North on Wednesday for a key match at 7 p.m.
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 3, HARRY S TRUMAN 0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-10)
The Indians tuned up for Wednesday’s showdown against Pennsbury with a sweep of the Tigers.
