WILLIAM TENNENT 3, NESHAMINY 0 (25-5, 25-11, 25-14)
The Panthers appear to be finding their stride after several early season losses. They picked up their second win in three days with a convincing sweep of the Redskins on Thursday.
“It was the best I’ve seen the girls play yet,” coach Brian Bassler said. “We had a balanced attack and played great defense.
“We were very aggressive. We played smart and dictated play all night. I’m really proud of their effort. They were awesome tonight.”
Ashley Weidman led a balanced attack with seven kills while Amber Wood, Chelsea Gallagher and MJ Alanis each contributed five kills.. Gallagher also had three aces. Junior libero CC Weir had six aces to go along with nine digs. Hannah Washam was credited with 26 assists.
Neshaminy coach Kate Livingstone tipped her hat to the Panthers.
“Their libero played exceptionally good defense,” she said of Weir. “And everyone else on their team played solidly as well.
“Tennent is the best team we have faced so far this season, but I know our girls will bounce back for both Council Rock teams next week.”
Junior Danielle Catapano led the Redskins defense with 10 digs while Morgan Oberholtzer had six digs, four kills and three aces. Julia Staub had seven assists.
HATBORO-HORSHAM 3, UPPER DUBLIN 0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-6)
The Hatters used a balanced attack to defeat the Flying Cardinals with the kills equally earned by Sam Jones, Lauren Laucella, Quinn O’Donnell, Laura Calvin, Katie McKay and Jamie Stockzo. Laucella also added five blocks, and O’Donnell contributed four. Caitlin Klotzbach and Candyce Riley led the defense with seven and four digs respectively. Once again, Klotzbach, Riley, Laucell and Lauren Yanni delivered nearly perfect passing scores. Jones and Hannah Steiger dished out 16 of the team’s assists. Riley also served three aces.
“The win was a team effort by all,” coach Kathy Tanner said.
For the Flying Cardinals, Melanie Phifer had three kills, and Taylor D’Ginto had one ace, one kill and six assists.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, SOUDERTON 1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-16)
The Patriots dropped the first game of Thursday’s match but rallied to win the next three. East was led at the net by Hannah Lunak (11 kills), Courtney Kauffman (10 kills), Lindsay Macintosh (10 kills) and Rachel Clow (eight kills). Directing the offense was Caroline Davis with 37 assists. Defensively, the Patriots received big performances from Clow (12 digs), Caroline Davis (12 digs), Haley Echelmeier (10 digs) and Erin Lane (nine digs).
“Consistent defense proved to be the difference for us again,” coach Scott Geller said.
UPPER MERION 3, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-12)
The Vikings remained perfect with their sweep of the Colonials Thursday.
“The sets would start out close, but then Upper Merion would eventually blow out the mistake-prone Lady Colonials,” PW coach Michael Nguyen said.
Emily Houck led PW with five kills, two aces and two digs. Torri Biggins had three kills and five assists while Ryan Haney led the defense with 14 digs. Riley Hellings had six assists.
ABINGTON 3, WISSAHICKON 0 (25-6, 25-18, 25-11)
Abington's strong serving game kept the Trojans out of system in Thursday night's match. Liz Gassman went 11-for-11 in serving with three aces, and Emma Garg was 18-of-19 in serving with several aces.
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, PENNRIDGE 0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-19)
Alicia West (10 kills, three aces, six digs), Maddie Klun (eight kills, three aces, seven digs), Rachel Baker (seven kills, one ace and six digs) and Jess West (three kills, two aces and 26 assists) led the Bucks to the sweep. Also making contributions were Rachel Farnin (10 digs), Courtney King (three kills, one ace, seven digs) and Candace Ruppert (four kills).

PENNSBURY 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1 (25-20, 25-18, 15-25, 25-19)
In a battle of the National Conference heavyweights, the Falcons won Wednesday night’s showdown at Council Rock North. The win gives the defending champions an early jump in the race for the conference crown.
“This was huge,” senior Kate Webb said. “Just to have the momentum this early in the season and just to win on their court with their crowd was so big.”
The senior libero led a tenacious Falcon defensive effort with 11 digs, including some improbable ups of Rock North kill attempts.
“She had some of the biggest plays,” Pennsbury coach Michael Falter said of Webb. “We have been working on (our defense). The floor defense hasn’t really been what we want it to be in the past couple of tournaments, but today they were disciplined and followed the game plan exactly the way we wanted them to.
“I think it really made a difference, especially in the fourth game. Olivia (Aizen) had some pretty big digs when their middle started to tip. She was sitting right there, and we ran a pretty good offense off it.”
Cara Reilly added four digs to go along with 14 kills. Taylor McCartney also had a big night with 13 kills, four aces and one dig. Jae Jackson had five blocks, and setter Paige Misawic had 21 assists. Aizen had five kills with no errors and four blocks
For the Indians, senior Lauren Blachowski had 13 kills. Senior libero Erin Stewart had 25 digs while sophomore setter Krista Campbell had 29 assists.
“I’m very proud of their defense and their serve receive,” Rock North coach Kinsey Lynch said of her squad. “That’s one element at practice they’ve exceeded my expectations and did extremely well, but we’re not capitalizing on the free balls the other team is giving us or capitalizing when there should be kills.
“That was really the main difference – they were putting ball on the floor more frequently than we were.”
The first set featured 12 ties. The Indians trailed by just one (17-16) after a Kristi Kuiken kill, but a kill by Pennsbury’s Sarah Sweetland sparked a 5-0 Falcon run that culminated with a McCartney kill. Reilly delivered a kill for game point.
In the second set, Sweetland broke a 7-7 tie with a winner, which brought McCartney to the service line. The junior outside hitter reeled off seven straight points to give the Falcons a commanding lead.
“That (serving run) is huge because you feel so much more up, and there’s so much more energy on the court,” Webb said. “You can feel it right when the runs starts, and just to have that is so key in a game.”
Rock North opened up a quick 5-1 lead in the third set. They led 10-3 after a Falcon hit in the net and upped that lead to 15-6 after a Rachel McLaughlin-McManis kill. A Jessica Charlton kill gave the Indians a double-digit lead (16-6), and they never looked back.
Pennsbury regained control of the match in the fourth set, turning a 9-9 tie into an 18-11 lead after a Rock North hit in the net. The Indians would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
“Pennsbury played a great game,” Lynch said. “There were some long rallies, and they played great on defense. Both Pennsbury and our team will be improving over the next couple of weeks and we’ll see each other again.”
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, PLYOUTH WHITEMARSH 1 (25-8, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21)
Abby Mummert led the Titans to the non-league win on Wednesday.
“Abby stood out with an amazing performance with leadership and skill with serving and hitting,” coach Ulana Keer said. “She took control with serving strings in games one and three.”
Mummert finished with seven aces to go along with seven kills and five digs. Senior Heather Kobrzynski also had seven aces, and Jax Babezki had three aces. Ally Horvath had a pair of aces, and Madi Conroy added one.
Conroy also had 15 assists, and Bebezki had six kills with Wise and Haffey delivering three each. Berton and Kobrzynski both had four digs while Miller had three. Babezki had a big day at the net with 10 blocks and Wise added six.
For the Colonials, Tori Biggins had four kills, three aces and eight digs. Emily Houck had two kills and six aces. Michele Taunton had four kills and Cara Sweeney and Emma Fisher both had three kills. Riley Hellings had 13 assists and four digs. Keelin McEleney had five digs, and Cindy Ly had four.
