GIRLS
AMERICAN CONFERENCE
Wissahickon 1, Cheltenham 0 (OT)
It was a close matchup between the Trojans and the Panthers, who both now boast a 3-1 record in league play. Neither team scored in regulation, and finally, with two minutes remaining in overtime, Wissahickon’s Ellen-Claire Benbow found herself taking a pivotal corner kick. She found Megan Guzewicz around the 18-yard line, and Guzewicz sent home the game winner.
Coach Shannon Creamer-Franke said, “(We) knew from the start this was a must win,” so the Trojans started the game on a mission. The Trojans’ coach credited the work of Anna Chiodo-Ortiz, who shut down one of Cheltenham’s best players, Sami Silar, with smart plays and also lauded the outstanding defensive performance of Meredith Brown.
“Grit, skill and a game-winning goal, a real team effort” was how Franke summarized the performance.
Wissahickon’s goalie Rachel Stone had four saves while the Panthers’ keeper stopped 10. The Trojans held a 16-6 advantage in shots.
Springfield 4, Norristown 0
The Spartans were thrilled to earn their first league win of the season. After competing in the BAL for the past two seasons, their future has not been clear for the 2012 season. Scoring for the Spartans in their convincing win were Molly Fitzpatrick, Megan Wheatley, Danielle Dahme and Jewell Ringgold.
“It was a great team effort,” coach Suzette Wolfe said. “We moved the ball well, we played well.”
Franke also praised the performance of the Eagles’ keeper, noting, “She was awesome, she did an outstanding job.”

Upper Dublin 5, Upper Moreland 1
NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Council Rock North 3, Pennsbury 1
The Indians remained perfect in conference play with their big win over Pennsbury. Michaela Finneyfrock, who has been consistently strong, found the net first, and freshman Tori Hill also scored in the first half to send the Indians into the half with a 2-0 lead. Alexa Steele scored the final goal for the Indians in the second half before the Falcons got on the scoreboard.
“It was a good team effort, no one had a bad game,” coach Larry Sullivan said.
Sullivan also commended the efforts of midfielder Nicole Moonan, who has been a major contributor in each one of the Indians’ wins, and Sarah Cannon, who Sullivan says “didn’t make a mistake all day.”
Sullivan also was impressed by the fight the Falcons put up.
“Pennsbury doesn’t take any prisoners- we played close with them and they tried hard but we responded well,” the Indians’ coach said. “It was our first really tough game, it’s a good start.”
The only goal scored for the Falcons was by Uche Onuoha assisted by Cassandra Berger. The Indians improved to an impressive 6-0 record overall (4-0 SOL) while the Falcons are now 4-2 overall (3-1 SOL).
Abington 4, Truman 2
The Ghosts improved their overall record to 2-4 with a win today over the Tigers. Molly Wyman connected twice and assisted on a goal by Kayla Nolan. Gabby Nolan scored for the Ghosts off a pass from Emily Rankin. Emily Valleras and Gabby also contributed an assist.
Coach Rick Tompkins credited Jess Domansky with a solid defensive effort and Toni Washington for providing a much-needed spark in this SOL matchup.
Neshaminy 8, William Tennent 0
The Redskins were unstoppable today with numerous significant contributors. Leading the ‘Skins was Megan Schafer with 3 goals and 2 assists and Katie Suchodolski who had 2 goals and 1 assist. Other goal scorers were Jess Kelly (2 goals) and Erin Farrell (1 goal, 1 assist). Amy Mandia, and Morgan Goldenbaum both added an assist.
It was Suchodolski (Mandia assist) putting the Redskins on the scoreboard with an early goal and Kelly (Goldenbaum assist) connecting for the eighth goal to put the finishing touches on the decisive win for a Redskin squad that remains undefeated in conference play (4-0).
Council Rock South 3, Bensalem 1
Senior Paige McDowell dominated the field, scoring all three goals for the Golden Hawks
CONTINENTAL CONFERENCE
Pennridge 1, Central Bucks West 0 (2 OT)
The Rams are making sure they keep their fans on the edge of their seats this season with some thrilling SOL matchups, and Friday was no exception. After over 99 minutes of scoreless action, Rams offensive leader Natalia Pinkney only saw net after Jackie Stevens played a through ball to her with 1.8 seconds remaining in double overtime and was able to score the gripping game winner.
“They played a really deep defense, so it was hard to get any kind of flow forward, but Carly Henry was everywhere the ball was,” coach Audrey Anderson said.
Anderson described the intense battle as back and forth and lauded Megan Shenk and Pinkney for stepping up when the Rams need them to, and during a 3-0 week with very close games, they were needed a lot.
Central Bucks East 4, Souderton 0
The Patriots dominated the Indians Friday night, winning by a convincing 4-0 score. Abby Emmert scored first to send the Patriots into the half with a 1-0 lead. Josie Dutton scored early in the second half, allowing the Patriots to start pulling away. Ali Walker finished off the job, scoring the final two goals only five minutes apart to sink the Indians.
East Coach Paul Eisold continues to credit his squad for playing as a team
“Lots of girls are getting credit for doing the right things,” he said.
Eisold also commended Souderton for hard-fought battle.
“Souderton played very well defensively and they had some moments but couldn’t keep us off the board tonight,” the Patriots’ coach said.
Hatboro-Horsham 3, Central Bucks South 0
Neither team could find the net in the first half, resulting in a 0-0 tie going into the half. But the Hatters found what worked for them early in the second half and didn’t look back. Tory Adlam scored the game’s first goal, assisted by Marykate Bateman in the 48th minute. Bateman, who has scored eight goals in five games, continued to control the offense by scoring the remaining two goals, using assists from Mikaela Malofiy and Gina Mallinder.
Briana Cummins earned her first varsity shutout and was lauded for a ‘lights out game.’
Mikaela Malofiy was credited for helping the team handle the Titans while adding some attacking runs from the midfield.
The Hatters held a 16-4 advantage in shots, and Titan keepers Morgan Campbell and Emiily Polcino combined for three saves. The Hatters are now 2-2 in the SOL and the Titans are 1-1-2.
North Penn 1, Quakertown 0
The Maidens ended their scoring drought after Tina Miller found Elizabeth Ricci in the 75th minute.
Coach Mike Koch described Ricci’s game winner as a “brilliant goal on a 30-yard laser shot.”
North Penn had four shots on goal while Quakertown had two. Maiden’s keeper Megan Gerhart and Laura Leonard had two saves, and Panthers’ keeper Erinne Finlayson stopped three.
BOYS
CONTINENTAL CONFERENCE
Central Bucks East 1, Souderton 0
The Patriots were searching for a win after suffering two tough losses this week, and they got a big one on Friday when they knocked Souderton from the ranks of the undefeated.
“This was our most complete (effort) team-wise against very good Souderton team,” East coach Mike Gorni said.
Spencer Palermo scored a goal that turned out to be the game winner in the second minute of the second half, using a Ben Marks assist.
Gorni acknowledged the strong performances of both keepers. Tyler Afflerbach had seven saves for the Indians while Jacob Nesteruk had six for the Patriots.
“Souderton is an excellent team, playing at a great level,” Gorni said. “We were glad to get the result.”
This team effort saw standout performances by Ryan Bare, Mark Philipson and Ian McArdle. Gorni said that Ryan Gleason and Robert Saldo also had great games, noting, “They were steady all day.”
Souderton falls to 3-1 in league play (4-1 overall) while East improves to 2-2 in the SOL (3-2 overall).
Quakertown 4, North Penn 0
The Panthers earned their second win of the season. Connor Floyd scored a goal that turned out to be the game winner off a penalty kick, spotting the Panthers a 1-0. Kyle Woulfe followed with three consecutive goals for the hat trick, using a Floyd assist on the first and banging home a penalty kick for the second. The Panthers, who improved to 2-4 overall, are making sure no one in the SOL counts them out this season. The Knights are now 3-2 overall.
Central Bucks South 4, Hatboro-Horsham 1
The Titans’ goals were scored by Connor Stackhouse, Colin McGonigal, Brendan Rennie and Dan Busichio. Jeff O’Brien scored the only goal for the Hatters, who fall to 0-4 in the SOL. CB South is now 3-1 in the league.
AMERICAN CONFERENCE
Wissahickon 2, Cheltenham 1
Wissahickon’s Pat Magdalinski (Shane Fallen assist) scored in the seventh minute to give the Trojans the early lead, but they were deadlocked 1-1 at the half as the Panthers answered with a goal. Cole Kropnick connected for the game winner in the 86th minute, assisted by Matt Knittel. Both the Trojans and Panthers had eight shots on goal. In the net for the Trojans, Neal Guaglianone had three saves.
Plymouth Whitemarsh 1, Upper Merion 0 (OT)
The Colonials fought a hard battle to finally net a win over the Vikings. Four minutes into overtime, sophomore Alex Bilodeau scored the game winner off a corner kick.
Upper Dublin 4, Upper Moreland 0
The Flying Cardinals shut out the Bears 4-0. Brian Schaefer, John Roos, Alex Browndorf and Tyler Whitehead each scored one goal for Upper Dublin.
Springfield 3, Norristown 2 (2 OT)
Spartan goal scorers were Darren Ball (1 goal, 1 assist), Nick Emmett (1 goal, 1 assist) and Riley Woron (assisted by Tyler bond). Eagles’ goal scorers were Drew Baltrus and Sean Calhoun. Both keepers recorded four saves in this league contest that was extended close to 100 minutes until the Spartans finished off the Eagles.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Neshaminy 2, William Tennent 1
The Redskins scored first only 10 minutes into the game when Nick Tucci found the back of the net. In the second half, Tennent’s Johnny Cialantre tied the game 1-1. The Redskins scored the game winner when Cody Minnig connected with Reynaldo Bonilla.
“Chris Waston (GK) made a few difficult saves and managed our box really well,” Neshaminy coach Tom Foley said. “It was a very good (win) for us. Everyone who stepped on the field for us played hard and well.”
Neshaminy now is atop the conference standings with a 4-0 record while Tennent falls to 2-2 in the SOL.
Pennsbury 2, Council Rock North 1 (OT)
Charlie Rushing proved a force to be reckoned with once again as the Falcons beat the Indians, scoring in the final three minutes of the game to knot the score and send the game into overtime. Colin Waldner connected in overtime for the game winner.
The Indians took an early lead in the 14th minute, but the Falcons did not give up.
Bensalem 2, Council Rock South 1
The Owls get their first league victory after beating the Golden Hawks. The Bears’ offense was led by Josh Peprah who scored both of their goals with assists by Eric Cory and Jimmy McDowell. Tom Pascarella was the only player to score for the Golden Hawks (3-1). The Owls, who picked up their first conference win, are 1-3 in the SOL.
Abington 5, Harry S. Truman 0
Matt Treacy turned a Chris Treacy pass into a goal to put the Ghosts on top 1-0 three minutes into Friday's game. That lead grew 2-0 when, after a restart, Danny Shephard found Chris Treacy for the score. Kyles Rocks turned a nice cross from the end line into a goal that put the Ghosts on top 3-0. Danny Shephard scored the fourth and fifth goals. Abington keeper Malcolm Kane turned away a penalty shot to preserve the shutout.
