Scott Huff highlights wins by Souderton, Wissahickon & William Tennent and recaps all of the weekend’s action.

The teams of the Suburban One League will open respective conference schedules this week – with the exception of both Pennridge and Quakertown in the SOL Continental Conference who meet on Thanksgiving morning – and there were some eye opening non-league scores last week.
Souderton (2-1) was on the road and stunned host Neshaminy (2-1) 18-7 on the legendary turf at Heartbreak Ridge. The Indians were coming off a difficult 29-23 loss to Unionville, while the Skins routed both Northeast (24-0) and Hatboro-Horsham (45-0) in their first two games.
“This was a special win at a special place,” said Souderton head coach Ed Gallagher. “It was just a huge win for our football program. I was thrilled with the way the kids responded the after the tough loss to Unionville. The seniors left everything they had on the field.”
One senior that had a special connection to the Neshaminy football program was Souderton senior Dan Knight. Both of Knight’s parents are graduates of Neshaminy High School.
“Dan is without question one of our team leaders this year,” said Gallagher. “It seemed like he was very vocal during each of the timeouts during the game. He didn’t want to go home without winning the football game.”
Souderton had a huge game turned in by senior Anthony Williams who scored two touchdowns and raced for 163 yards – all in the first half.
“Anthony has a sprained ankle, and we have been careful about his playing time,” said Gallagher. “We will give him some time off and see where he is midweek.
“We have Central Bucks West next, and that is a team that plays with a lot of confidence,” added Gallagher. “They have a lot of players back from last year, and we are going to have a tough challenge.”
Wissahickon (2-1) knocked Central Bucks West (2-1) out of the ranks of the unbeaten as the Trojans collected a rousing 38-35 overtime victory over the Bucks.
“We talked as a team about overcoming adversity after our loss to Ryan last week,” said Wissahickon head coach Jeff Cappa in reference to the Trojans 27-21 loss. “We had too many penalties – too many turnovers. You can’t make mistakes against good football teams and expect to win.
“Even in the win over CB West, we had to overcome adversity,” added Cappa. “We lost a two-touchdown lead twice and had to go into overtime. But we gave ourselves a chance to win, and we were able to come up with the win.”
Wissahickon – which won the game in OT on a 22-yard field goal by Greg McDonough – had a huge game turned in by senior Dan Murphy who rushed for 205 yards and three touchdowns.
“Dan is a tough kid – a good athlete,” said Cappa. “He was our only returning player in the backfield, and he set a great example with an excellent offseason.
“Upper Dublin in our next game is going to (be) a game filled with emotion,” added Cappa of the Trojans’ conference rival. “They have been impressive this season, and Upper Dublin is a football program that knows how to win. It should be a great football game.”
William Tennent (1-2) won its first game of the season in impressive fashion as the Panthers scored an eye-popping 47 points in a 47-30 victory over winless Upper Merion (0-3).
“We even had three touchdowns called back,” said William Tennent head coach Biz Keeny. “We have been playing very well offensively all season, and we have shown a good balance with the run and the pass.
“We have taken small strides since the beginning of the season,” added Keeny. “Our problem is that we don’t have a whole lot of depth. We need to stay healthy.”
The Panthers – who rushed for 395 rushing yards for the game - had a healthy outing turned in by senior Jeff Ledford who led the team with 166 yards and a score.
“We have high expectations this year for Jeff,” said Keeny. “He runs the ball very well, and he cuts back well. He has done pretty much what we expected.
“Now we get Neshaminy to open the league season, and they are coming off a loss,” continued Keeny in reference to the Skins 18-7 loss to Souderton. “Really, nothing has changed. Neshaminy and Pennsbury always have been the gauge as to how good your football team is going to be.”

National Conference
Council Rock North (1-2) captured its first win of the season as the Indians blasted winless Hatboro-Horsham (0-3) – 37-0. Freshman quarterback Brandon Mcllwain completed 11 passes for 175 yards and fired three touchdown passes. Brandon Knotts scored on a 67-yard TD pass, while AJ Nielsen scored on a 26-yard strike. Mcllwain also rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the winners.
Abington (2-1) rebounded from its loss to Plymouth Whitemarsh as the Ghosts defeated Central Bucks East – 21-6. Junior Craig Reynolds rushed the ball 22 times for 102 yards and pair of touchdowns. Reynolds scored on runs of 13 and six yards. Dylan Collins threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Trey Guaglionona.

William Tennent (1-2) scored early and often as the Panthers won their first game of the season over Upper Merion (0-3) – 47-30. Tennent had a three-touchdown performance turned it by Cameron Jenkins who scored on a TD pass from quarterback Joe Lutz and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns with scoring runs of five and nine yards. Lutz completed 5-of-7 passes for 77 yards.
Neshaminy (2-1) trailed 18-0 at the half and could not recover as the Skins fell to Souderton (2-1) – 18-7. Hugh Hart completed six passes for Neshaminy for 55 yards that included a 23-yard touchdown pass to Justin Andrews. Andrews caught five passes for 53 yards.

Harry S Truman (2-1) closed out the non-league schedule with a win as the Tigers won in the final seconds over Fels (0-3) – 23-20. Manny Fisher kicked a 30-yard field goal with just three seconds left in regulation. Jordan Livingston rushed 17 times for 120 yards and scored on runs of six and 46 yards. Dewayne Ellis returned an interception 45 yards for a defensive touchdown.
Pennsbury (1-2) played one of the finest teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania as the Falcons fell to Downingtown East (3-0) – 42-28. Senior Shawn Pepper had an electric game for Pennsbury with a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns, one of 91 yards and the other of 87 yards. Sykeem Steward rushed for a team-high 94 yards and a score, while Chuck Snorweah also scored for the Falcons.

Bensalem (1-2) ventured into the Philadelphia Catholic League as the Owls suffered a 41-13 defeat at the hands of Archbishop Ryan (2-1). Bensalem place kicker Alec Rosenfeld booted a pair of field goals for the Owls – both from 27 yards out. Ohyle Elijah scored on a 90-yard kickoff return for Bensalem. The Owls trailed by just 7-3 at halftime.
Council Rock South (0-3) is still in search of its first win as the Golden Hawks lost to visiting Pennridge (2-1) – 31-7. The lone scoring play for Rock South came when quarterback Greg Paprocki fired a 12-yard scoring strike to Christian Crane. Crane was the leading rusher for the Golden Hawks with 65 yards on 13 carries.

American Conference
Upper Dublin (2-1) ventured into the Philadephia Public League as the Flying Cardinals soared to a 42-20 victory over the Lincoln Railsplitters (0-3). Quarterback John Derr completed eight of 11 passes for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns – one to Brad Shildkrout. Khalid Weems scored on a 70-yard punt return and also rushed for a two-yard score and a six-yard score. Mike Lee also scored for the winners.
Wissahickon (2-1) held off Central Bucks West in overtime as the Trojans edged the Bucks (2-1) - 38-35. Wissahickon rushed for a game-high 319 yards that included a wonderful effort by senior Dan Murphy. Murphy rushed for 203 yards on 26 carries and scored three touchdowns. Murphy scored on runs of two, 63, and 43 yards. Quarterback Randy Frankenfield completed five of seven passes that included a 15-yard TD pass to Gordon Bentley. Placekicker Greg McDonough kicked the game winning field goal in overtime.

Plymouth Whitemarsh (2-1) lost its first game of the seasonas the Colonials dropped a 21-13 contest to unbeaten West Chester Henderson (3-0). Plymouth Whitemarsh led the game at one point by a 13-7 score. Senior Corey Kelly scored on an eight-yard run for the Colonials, while senior Terry Brown raced 65 yards to paydirt for the final Plymouth Whitemarsh touchdown. PW outgained the Warriors in total offense, but lost the game on the scoreboard.
Upper Moreland (2-1) lost its first game of the season as the Golden Bears dropped a 27-21 contest to Interboro (2-1). Upper Moreland drove inside the Buc five-yard line late in the game but could not convert. Robert Knox had a super day with 163 yards on 35 carries and scored on runs of three and 20 yards. The third Golden Bear score came on a touchdown pass from Charlie Hooker to Tyler Whitmore. UM held a 327-238 yard advantage in total offense.

Cheltenham (2-1) won its second straight contest as the Panthers clawed visiting Quakertown (1-2) – 21-9. The Black Cats scored a pair of offensive touchdowns and Greg Morris scored both of them. Morris finished with 12 carries for 110 yards. Cheltenham scored a defensive touchdown when Charles Cooper scored on a 45-yard fumble return.
Springfield (3-0) kept its non-league record perfect as the Spartans routed the Academy of the New Church (0-2) – 34-13. Springfield senior Brendan Doyle scored a pair of long distance touchdowns on runs of 52 and 75 yards. Doyle finished with 125 yards on just three carries. Jhaloni Johnson rushed 14 times for 180 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. The meeting with Cheltenham this week will be the first SOL game for the Spartans since 1992.

Norristown (0-3) remained winless as the Eagles were humbled by Central Bucks South (3-0) – 42-0. Norristown has been outscored 97-15 in its first three games. Quarterback Sonny Brewer completed 10 passes for 70 yards, while Darius Willis was the leading rusher with 67 yards on 10 carries. The game on Saturday with Upper Merion will be the first played at the new Norristown Athletic Complex with a 1 pm kickoff.
Upper Merion (0-3) remained winless as the Vikings lost for the 23rd straight time in a 47-30 setback against William Tennent. Upper Merion played well on the offensive side of the football with 300 yards of total offense. Hassan Gardner rushed the ball 22 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Carmen Fortino completed 13 passes that included a touchdown pass.

Continental Conference
Souderton (2-1) captured a huge non-league victory as the Indians defeated host Neshaminy (2-1) – 18-7. Anthony Williams played only the first half and generated 163 yards on just seven carries that included TD runs of nine and 56 yards. Jarrett Reinhard scored the other touchdown for the winners on a 21-yard run. Souderton led 18-0 at the close of the first half.
Central Bucks West (2-1) lost its first game of the season as the Bucks lost in overtime to Wissahickon (2-1) – 38-35. Cody Reimenschneider accounted for all five of the CB West scores. The senior quarterback completed 21 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Riemenschneider also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and finished with 75 yards on 18 carries.

Central Bucks South (3-0) remained unbeaten as the Titans mercy-ruled Norristown (0-3) – 42-0. How about Super Sophomore Josh Adams – whose four scores included a 78-yard punt return. Adams scored three rushing touchdowns on runs of 28, 37, and 65 yards. Adams has already scored 14 times this season for the Titans. Cale Mosher scored on a 64-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jon Pileggi.
Hatboro-Horsham (0-3) remained winless as the Hatters were topped by Council Rock North (1-2) – 37-0. Hatboro-Horsham has been outscored 82-0 in its last two games that also included a 45-0 loss to Neshaminy. Senior quarterback Steve Palo completed 11 passes for the Hatters and was also the leading rusher with 13 rushes for 33 yards. Hatboro-Horsham finished with 140 yards of total offense.

North Penn (1-2) concluded its brutal non-league schedule as the Knights were humbled by St. Joseph Prep (3-0) – 31-3. The Knights permitted the opening kickoff to be returned for a touchdown and trailed the Philadelphia Catholic League power 28-0 at halftime. The only score came on a Brandon Mandes field goal from 27-yards. Quarterback Austin Shearer completed eight passes – four passes were completed to Eddie Posavec.
Central Bucks East (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season as the Patriots were defeated by Abington (2-1) – 21-6. Zach Nelson fired a 48-yard pass to Sean Usowski to set up the lone CBE score – a four-yard touchdown run by Vince Thompson. Nelson completed six of eight passes for 125 yards.

Pennridge (2-1) came up with a strong 31-7 victory over host Council Rock South (0-3). Michael Class again proved to be one of the premier backs in the area with 30 carries for 256 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. MacKenzie Crawford scored a rushing touchdown for Pennridge, while quarterback Alex Krivda fired a 21-yard scoring pass to Kyle Bigham.
Academy Park (3-0) remained unbeaten this season with a resounding 32-0 victory over Sun Valley. The Knights opened the season with a win over Marple-Newtown (29-20) and followed with a 19-13 victory over Great Valley.

Quakertown (1-2) played with a depleted roster as the Panthers lost to host Cheltenham (2-1) – 21-9. Q-town has 10 starters missing from action due to injury. The Black Cats led early on a 32-yard field goal by Nick Soriano. The lone touchdown for Quakertown came on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Tim Taggart to Doug Barndt.
Pocono Mountain East (2-1) won its second game of the year as the Cardinals soared to a 41-0 victory over Lehighton. Pocono Mountain East opened the season with a 39-12 win over Dieruff, while the Cardinals lost their second game of the year to East Stroudsburg – 29-26.
