Danielle Mustin excels on the court and in the classroom. The Wissahickon senior is captain of a tennis team that has won the American Conference title in each of the last three years and also boasts a district title and a district runner-up finish. During Mustin’s years on the squad, the Trojans also have advanced to the state quarterfinals and semifinals. Mustin earned first team all-league honors, won the SOL American Conference crown and finished in the top three in districts. “She has really developed her game and worked hard in the offseason to develop it,” coach Mary Ellen Devlin said.

Beyond her accomplishments on the tennis court, Mustin has left her mark in the classroom as well. Earlier this year, she captured first place in the Pennsylvania Future Business Leaders of America competition in the category of Business Procedures. In July, she went on to finish second in the national FBLA competition where she was competing against 8,000 other students. She’s also a member of the Key Club, the National Honor Society and Health Careers Club. “She’s an excellent student athlete, in that order,” Devlin said. “She’s been a pillar of our team for all four years. She’s been a steady force. She’s a pleasure to coach.”

Mustin, who has participated in the Pennsylvania Science Fair for two years, plans to major in biology and pre-med in college. She is a Community Advisory Council member at Dow Chemical.

Univest’s SuburbanOneSports.com Featured Male Athlete (Week of Sept. 19, 2012)

Souderton football coach Ed Gallagher calls Connor Newlin a lead-by-example captain. “He doesn’t say a lot, but he doesn’t have to say much,” the Indians’ coach said. “He doesn’t get in kids’ faces, but he just gives them that look, ‘Let’s get after it. Let’s get to work.’ He’s just a great kid.” Newlin takes his role as captain and leader seriously. “I feel responsible for almost everything happens on the team,” he said. “During the games, I just feel like there’s a certain awareness. I have to set an example for everybody, even the kids that aren’t playing on the sidelines. Since they aren’t experiencing it yet, I have to show them what varsity football is all about to get them excited and get them ready for it. Something most people don’t think about being a leader is that it isn’t always about being vocal.”

Newlin has been a mainstay on the offensive line the past two years, and in the absence of projected starter Josh Lister because of an injury, the senior captain also is lining up at defensive end. “I’ve been thrilled,” Gallagher said of Newlin’s performance on both sides of the ball. “Connor Newlin has been our best defensive end, and that’s saying a lot because we weren’t expecting him to play many snaps. He’s been very solid, and Connor has been our best offensive lineman for the first three games.”

Newlin hopes to play football at the collegiate level, and according to his coach, finding a college that fits shouldn’t be a problem for Newlin, an excellent student whose schedule includes honors and AP classes. The senior captain, who plans to major in business, also is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “He comes in with the right mentality,” Gallagher said. “He works hard in the weight room, and he’s a great academic student, so he’s going to have lots of options where he’s going to school.”
