SOL Girls' Volleyball Wrap (9-23-12)

Many SOL volleyball teams were in action this weekend. Check out some of the results.

Tennent captures second at Quakertown Tournament – William Tennent finished second to Central Bucks East in pool play, compiling a 6-2 mark, but the Panthers defeated Downingtown West 25-23 in the quarterfinals and then swept Central Bucks South (25-19, 26-24) to earn a spot in the tournament final where it fell to defending Class AA state champion Brandywine Heights (19-25, 17-25).
“I’m really proud of our entire team,” coach Brian Bassler said. “They battled the entire day – it was 11 hours of volleyball.”
After winning its pool with a 7-1 mark, Central Bucks East edged Cheltenham 26-24 in the quarterfinals but fell to Brandywine (17-19, 19-25) in the semifinals. Brandywine rolled through the tournament without a loss, compiling an 8-0 mark in pool play. Central Bucks South finished second to Brandywine in pool play with a 5-3 mark, and the Titans defeated Pennridge 25-17 in the quarterfinals before falling to Tennent in the quarterfinals. Neshaminy was 3-5 in that same pool. Molly MacDonald had a big day, contributing 28 digs and six aces. Julia Staub had 34 assists, four blocks and two kills. Jen Harasim had 10 kills, 19 digs and six blocks, and Morgan Oberholtzer had 15 digs, 12 kills and four aces.
Cheltenham was second to Downingtown West in its pool, compiling a 5-3 record. Upper Dublin and Souderton both finished 3-5 in that same pool. In Pool A, Pennridge, Gwynedd-Mercy and Allen all finished with identical 5-3 marks. Quakertown was 3-5 while Abington was 2-6.

Falcons at Haverford Tournament – The Falcons compiled a 2-6 record in pool play on Saturday, splitting their matches with Penncrest (25-17, 21-25) and Mount St. Joseph Academy (25-22, 21-25) and dropping a pair to Cardinal O’Hara (13-25, 21-25) and Unionville (23-25, 16-25).
“We struggled passing and blocking all day,” coach Mike Felter said. “Combine that and giving up multiple runs caused us to have a rough day.”
The team passed at 1.67 as a team for the day.
The Falcons, who were without Sarah Sweetland, were led by Cara Reilly (22 kills, 7 digs), Jae Jackson (10 kills, 4 blocks), Paige Misawic (29 assists, 9 digs) and Kate Webb (12 digs).
Pennsbury will host Mount St. Joe’s in what promises to be an interesting non-league match on Tuesday night.

Busy weekend for Vikings – On Friday, Upper Merion swept Norristown (25-6, 25-12, 25-2). Casey Griffith had 11 kills while Melanie Ingram added nine. Natalie O’Neil had five aces to go with her 26 assists.
On Saturday, Upper Merion traveled to Garnet Valley to participate in a tri-match with the Lady Jags and Villa Maria. Upper Merion defeated Garnet Valley in five tightly-contested sets (25-14, 21-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-9). Griffith led the Lady Vikings with 17 kills while Ingram had 14. Emily Shannon, according to coach Tony Funsten, was the ‘hero’ of the match as she had career highs in kills (12), digs (36) and aces (seven). Her twin sister, Ashley, had a career-high 43 digs. Eryn Brady had one solo and four assisted blocks with Niki Carpenter adding three solo blocks. Setter Natalie O’Neil had a career-high 39 assists.
“It was quite a match,” Funsten said.
An hour later, the Vikings took on a tough Villa Maria squad. Upper Merion won in three sets (25-11, 25-23, 25-20). Griffith once again had 17 kills and was helped by Ingram and Shannon with seven kills each. Niki Carpenter chipped in two solo and one assisted block. O’Neil had four aces and 30 assists.
In 24 hours, the Vikings played three matches and won all three. They will return to action on Monday night when they will host Wissahickon.
