MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington’s Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) was named the NEAC Men’s Cross Country Co-Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23. Kane was the top finisher out of 45 runners at the 5K Lancaster Bible College Invitational, crossing the finish line in 16:55.90 (5:26 pace per mile). It was the second straight first place finish for Kane, who also was the top finisher in the Penn State Abington Invitational.

Kane captured first place in Saturday’s Penn State Harrisburg Invitational, breaking the school record and the 8.3K course record with his time of 26:36.0. It was his third straight individual win this season. Teammate Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) finished third with a time of 29:06.0. The Nittany Lions finished first as a team.

Widener senior Ryan Gallagher (Neshaminy) finished 35th with a time of 27:29 in the men’s long race at the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational on Saturday.

Ursinus senior Sam Stortz (Upper Dublin) posted a time of 28:29 and freshman David Slade (Abington) finished in a time of 31:23 at the annual Paul Short Invitational on Friday. Ursinus finished 24th.

Senior James Rogers (Cheltenham) rounded out the top five for Gwynedd-Mercy, finishing with a time of 28:39 and an unofficial place of 85th at Saturday’s Dickinson College Short Invitational.

Senior Brian Quintrell (North Penn) was Shippensburg’s fourth runner in the Brown 8K at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, finishing 79th overall with a time of 26:39. The North Penn alum’s finish is almost a full two-minute improvement from his run at last year’s Paul Short Invite and is also 12 seconds faster than his 8K season PR of a year ago. The Raiders finished eighth as a team.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown’s Ashley Underkoffler (Central Bucks South) finished 18th with a time of 16:12.80 in Saturday’s Dickinson Short Course Invitational on Saturday. Elizabethtown finished second as a team.

Lock Haven’s Laura Histand (Neshaminy) posted a time of 24:17, finishing third for the women’s team in the Brown Race at the Paul Short Invitational. The women’s team finished 29th out of 39 teams in the Brown Race.

Shippensburg freshman Gabby Brackett (Bensalem) posted a time of 24:01 in the open 6K at the Paul Short Invitational, finishing 99th overall.

West Chester’s Trish Evans (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 25:01 at the Annual Paul Short Run. The Golden Rams finished 27th overall as a team.

Temple sophomore Kelly Broadbent (Upper Dublin) was the Owls’ fifth-fastest runner in the Brown 6K race of the 39th Annual Paul Short Invitational with a time of 24:14. The Owls finished 26th out of 39 teams, marking their highest finish ever at the Paul Short Invitational.

Penn State Abington’s Megan O’Farrell (Pennsbury) finished sixth at the Penn State Harrisburg Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 25:52.1. The Nittany Lions finished second as a team.

Freshman Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) rounded out No. 17 Penn State’s top seven at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, finishing 77th overall with a time of 17:52. The Nittany Lions took fifth overall, knocking off No. 8 Vanderbilt as well as No. 29 Wisconsin.  

Courtney Miller (Wissahickon) rounded out the top seven for Gwynedd-Mercy at the Dickinson College Short Invitational on Saturday, finishing 79th. The Griffins finished sixth out of 18 scoring teams.

La Salle’s Anne Areias (William Tennent) finished 26th at the Mason Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 24:10.2. The Explorers took first place as a team.

FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) contributed an assist in Delaware Valley’s 3-0 win over DeSales on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-2 non-conference loss to Widener, Prichett also had an assist.

Alyssa Tourdot (Wissahickon) scored her 11th goal in just 10 games in Albright College’s 3-2 win over Alvernia on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to Richard Stockton College, Tourdot contributed an assist.

Senior captain Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) led her No. 20 Drexel squad to a 3-2 overtime win over No. 15 New Hampshire on Sunday, contributing a pair of goals and an assist.  In Drexel’s 3-1 win over Towson on Friday, Fleischut scored a goal.

Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) got the start in goal and had two saves in 35 scoreless minutes in fourth-ranked IUP’s 4-3 win over 10th-ranked East Stroudsburg on Saturday. In a scoreless half of action, In IUP’s 4-1 win over Seton Hill on Tuesday, Varacallo recorded one save in a scoreless half of action.

Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) scored her team’s only goal in Lebanon Valley’s 2-1 loss to fourth-ranked Messiah on Saturday.

Senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal and an assist in the University of Scranton’s 6-0 win over Wells College on Saturday. Freshman forward Bryn Frankhouser (Plymouth Whitemarsh) added an assist. In Scranton’s 8-1 win over Immaculata on Tuesday, Kempf had two goals and an assist while Frankhouser added a single goal.

Junior Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) scored her team-best fifth goal of season in La Salle’s 2-0 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday. In Saturday’s 4-2 win over Bryant, sophomore Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) and senior Becca Chylack (Souderton) both added a goal. In last Sunday’s 3-1 loss at Liberty, Shoemaker scored the Explorers’ lone goal.

Junior Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) scored her fourth goal of the season in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 2-1 loss to Keystone on Wednesday.

Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) contributed an assist in Quinnipiac’s 3-2 win over Brown in a non-conference game on Wednesday.

Starting goalie Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) combined with teammate Julia Boyle for the shutout in No. 3 Princeton’s 8-0 win over Columbia on Friday.

Sophomore forward Jessie Accurso (Central Bucks South) scored her first goal of the season in Yale’s 3-1 win over Sacred Heart last Sunday.

Junior Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an assist in No. 6 Penn State’s 5-4 loss in overtime to No. 10 Northwestern on Friday.

FOOTBALL
Sophomore Craig Needhammer (North Penn) rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in Lycoming’s 33-10 win over King’s on Saturday. Teammate John Sibel (Pennsbury) had a nine-yard touchdown pass. Sibel had four catches for 35 yards.

Kevin Morton (Abington) became just the 19th player in Division II history to top the 100 career touchdown passes in Kutztown’s 56-49 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday. The Golden Bears led 42-21 at the half behind four TD passes from Morton, the third of which gave him triple digits in his career. Slippery Rock responded with 28 unanswered points to take a 49-42 lead early in the fourth quarter. Kutztown tied it up with 6:11 to play when Morton hit Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) for a 22-yard touchdown. Morton, who missed the West Chester game with an injury, completed 29-of-54 passes for five touchdowns and 301 yards. He became the fifth player in PSAC history with over 10,000 yards of total offense and now has 10,167 yards. He also is fifth in conference history in passing yards with 9,485. He is second in the PSAC record books with 102 passing touchdowns. His final pass completion of the game tied Andy Breault’s school record of 733. Mastromatto, who missed two straight games, rushed for 36 yards, caught eight passes for 91 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Shawn Leo (Souderton) kicked a 43-yard field goal in West Chester’s 37-34 upset of sixth-ranked Cal on Saturday. It is the first time West Chester has beaten a Top 10 program since its 31-10 win over then No. 10 Bloomsburg in 2009.

Sophomore wide receiver Josh Williams (Central Bucks South) caught a game-high six balls for 112 yards and a touchdown in Ursinus College’s 24-7 win over Moravian on Saturday. Freshman kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) booted a 42-yard field goal.

Junior defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) came up with his second interception of the season in No. 21 Shippensburg’s 49-6 win over Lock Haven. Sophomore wide receiver Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Dave Damirgian (Council Rock South) had a career and team best eight tackles in Monmouth University’s 55-24 loss to Albany on Saturday.

Senior Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) caught a touchdown pass in Bloomsburg’s 43-24 win over Gannon on Saturday.

Defensive end Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) had a 40-yard fumble return that set up Millersville’s lone touchdown in the Marauders’ 41-7 loss to No. 22 IUP on Saturday. Pat Cantrell (Pennsbury) recorded a career high 10 tackles and a half sack for the Marauders.

Temple senior placekicker/punter Brandon McManus (North Penn) was named the ECAC Specialist of the Week, it was announced on Sept. 25. In the Owls’ loss to Penn State, McManus nailed field goals of 33 and 42 yards to extend his school career record for field goals made to 52. His 42-yard field goal in the third quarter is his longest so far this season. McManus also punted six times for 291 yards (48.5 avg.), improving his career record punting average to 46.0 (61 punts and 2,812 yards). McManus kicked off four times for 211 yards (52.8 average) with three touchbacks. He has made 59 consecutive extra points. On the career charts, McManus is No. 2 in scoring with 291 points. He also was named the BIG EAST Conference Specialist of the Week for the second time this season. He earned national recognition from the College Football Performance Awards. He was named Honorable Mention Specialist of the Week and Honorable Mention Punter of the Week.

MEN’S GOLF
Sophomore Bobby Crawford (Council Rock North) finished in a tie for sixth place, and the Penn State Abington men’s golf team shot a team total 332 to finish fifth at the Swarthmore Fall Invitational. Senior Chris Schofield (Abington) finished 44th (90) while sophomore Mike Kubler (Upper Moreland) participated but did not finish due to darkness.

West Chester’s Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) carded an 84 on Sunday and finished with a 229 in this weekend’s Vulcan Invitational. Danny Walck (Pennridge) shot a 79 on Sunday, following up a 159 on Saturday, and finished the tournament with a 238. West Chester finished with an 882 overall score and placed third in the team standings.

La Salle junior Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) carded a 76 (+4) and is in ninth place after the first day of competition at the ECAC Championship held at Twisted Dune Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., on Sunday. Sophomore Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) placed second for the Explorers after posting a seven-over 79 and currently is in 14th place. La Salle shot a 29-over par 317 on the first day of competition. The Explorers are in fourth place out of the five-team field. At the Penn Invitational last weekend, Johnson finished in a tie for 25th place after posting 79-77=156 (+14). Goodreds posted 83-81=164 (+22) to finish in a tie for 46th.

Temple sophomore Matthew Crescenzo (Cheltenham) was tied for 32nd after posting a 146 (74-72) at the Macdonald Cup, which was hosted by Yale University. The Owls finished in a tie for ninth.  At last weekend’s Hartford Hawks Invitational, junior Russell Hartung (Central Bucks East) shot a 251 (88-84-85) to finish in a tie for 79th.

WOMEN’S GOLF
Middlebury College’s Jordan Glatt (Central Bucks East) shot a 164 (82-82) to finish seventh at the Middlebury College Women’s Invitational this weekend. Middlebury finished second to Williams College in the team standings. In last weekend’s Mount Holyoke Invitational, Glatt finished in a tie for 28th, shooting an 86 and 85 for a two-day total of 171.

MEN’S SOCCER
Christian Benner (Souderton)
scored the game-winning goal in West Chester’s 2-1 win over Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon.

Just 59 seconds after coming off the bench as a substitute, senior Matt Howard (Abington) recorded an unassisted goal that put Penn State Abington on top 2-0 on its way to a 5-1 win over Bryn Athyn College on Thursday. Senior Julian Ward (Abington) also scored a goal for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State Abington’s Marco Paparo (Abington) has been selected as the NEAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23 after a pair of strong performances. The 6-4 senior forward found the back of the net four times the preceding week and kept the Nittany Lions atop the NEAC standings with a 4-0 record and 12 team points on the year. Paparo collected the hat trick, netting three goals on three shots in a 3-1 victory over SUNY Institute of Technology. He would add another goal in a 4-1 conference win over SUNY Cobleskill. The four scores were Paparo’s first points. In the Nittany Lions win over SUNY Cobleskill, teammate Julian Ward also scored a goal.

Junior midfielder Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in Bloomsburg’s 5-1 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday. In Friday’s 4-1 loss to the University of Charleston, Miguel Diaz (Central Bucks East) scored his team’s only goal. In Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Chestnut Hill, Miller scored two goals and added two assists. 

Senior captain Sean Peckham (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist in Lafayette’s 2-1 win over Holy Cross on Saturday.

Senior Zach Turchi (Neshaminy) scored his first career goal in the 96th minute of La Salle’s 1-0 overtime win at St. Peter’s on Saturday night.  The ball deflected off a Saint Peter’s player, which Turchi picked up around the 20-yard line and found the back of the net. In Tuesday’s 0-0 tie at UMBC, Jidell Roach (Abington) launched a ball toward the upper part of the net that was punched up and away by the Retriever keeper with 43 seconds remaining in the second OT.

Troy Czapor (Council Rock South) connected for his third goal of the season in the 88th minute to propel Widener to a 1-0 win over Hood on Saturday.

Sophomore forward Wesley Fossile (North Penn) contributed an assist in East Stroudsburg’s 7-0 win over Seton Hill on Sunday. In Wednesday’s 2-0 upset of regionally ranked Philadelphia University, Fossile scored his first goal of the season, connecting for a goal in the 13th minute that turned out to be the game winner.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) scored her second goal of the season in Holy Family’s 3-0 win over Dominican College on Saturday. The first goal was scored on the rebound of a shot by freshman Stephanie Fischer (Pennsbury). In Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to Wilmington University, Kisselback scored her team’s only goal.

Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Elizabethtown’s 3-0 win over Arcadia on Saturday.

Patty Squicciarini (North Penn) scored a goal in Widener’s 4-0 win over Hood on Saturday.

Jen Hutchinson (Neshaminy) scored an unassisted goal in No. 4 West Chester’s 2-1 win over No. 24 Gannon on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 win over Mercyhurst, Ashley Saylor (Central Bucks South) contributed an assist to set up the game’s first goal.

Junior Michelle Pool (North Penn) contributed an assist in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 1-1 tie with Cabrini on Saturday.

Freshman Paula Jurewicz (Council Rock South) scored the first goal of her Temple career in the Owls’ 1-0 overtime win over Marist last Sunday. The Owls and Red Foxes fought through 96 minutes of scoreless action until Jurewicz buried a shot in the lower left corner of the net to give the Owls the win. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) made her first start since Sept. 2 and turned away all eight shots that came her way to post her second shutout of the season. In Saturday’s 1-0 loss to St. Joe’s, Murphy turned away seven shots.

Ashley Schoellkopf (Pennridge), who split time in goal,had one save in IUP’s 5-2 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday.

Senior defender Cara Dembrosky (Souderton) contributed an assist on the game-winning goal in Eastern University’s 3-0 win over DeSales on Saturday.

Alicia Roberts (Upper Moreland) scored a goal in Wilkes University’s 3-0 win over Delaware Valley College on Saturday. In Wilkes University’s 3-0 win over Susquehanna on Wednesday, Roberts contributed an assist.

Junior goalkeeper Gabrielle Pakhtigian (North Penn) earned her fifth shutout of the season in La Salle’s 1-0 win over Duquesne on Sunday. In Saturday’s 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure, Pakhtigian recorded three saves in the shutout.

Senior forward Ashley McKenna (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in No. 16 East Stroudsburg’s 2-0 win over Clarion on Saturday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) was forced to make just one save in Penn State Abington’s 5-0 win over Wilson College on Saturday. Benedict and the Nittany Lions’ defense has now recorded over 293 minutes of scoreless ball as Penn State Abington posted its third straight shutout. In last Sunday’s 3-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill, sophomore Samantha Whalen (Central Bucks South) scored the game’s first goal. Benedict recorded four saves in the shutout.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
Gwynedd-Mercy junior Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) won the number one singles flight title for the third year in a row at the Goucher College Open this weekend. Corina Davis (North Penn) was part of the second doubles flight that went 2-1 in its three matches. In Thursday’s 9-0 CSAC win over Cedar Crest, Fein earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at number one singles and was part of the first doubles team that earned an 8-0 win.

East Stroudsburg sophomore Belinda Nguyen (Norristown) was 1-2 in ‘D’ singles and had a 6-2, 6-3 win over Samantha Smith (Bloomsburg) at the Bloomsburg Fall Invitational this weekend.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) recorded her fourth double-double of the season in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Baptist Bible College on Saturday, posting 32 assists and 11 digs. The win was the ninth in a row for Cabrini, which upped its overall record to 11-4 (4-0 Colonial States Athletic Conference). In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Marywood University, junior Kristy Riley (Hatboro-Horsham) had seven kills, and Koenig had six digs to go with her 29 assists. In Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Immaculata, Koenig had 24 assists.

Abbie Keating (Neshaminy) had a team high 17 kills in Cairn University’s 3-2 loss to Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday. In Cairns University’s sweep of Delaware Valley College and Gwynedd-Mercy last weekend, Keating had nine kills and 12 digs against Del Val and 11 kills and 17 digs against Gwynedd-Mercy.

Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed four kills and four blocks in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-1 win over Bryn Mawr on Saturday. In F&M’s 3-1 win over Swarthmore on Wednesday, Harvey had 11 kills and four blocks.

Freshman Leah Brown (William Tennent) had 16 assists and five digs in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 loss to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday. In the Nittany Lions’ 3-1 win over York College (N.Y.), Brown had a career-high 29 assists.  Kate Schalck (William Tennent) had 12 kills and three digs. In Wednesday’s dramatic 3-2 win over the College of St. Elizabeth, Schalck had 12 kills, three blocks and three aces, and Brown had a game-best three aces in the win.

Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) had nine kills and three aces in Lebanon Valley’s 3-1 win over Arcadia on Tuesday.

Senior outside hitter JeanAnne Carey (Pennsbury) had 11 digs in Moravian’s 3-0 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday. Teammate Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) had three blocks. In Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Juniata College, O’Hara had six kills and two blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had seven kills in the University of Connecticut’s 3-0 loss to St. John’s on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman libero Deanna Bianchini (Wissahickon) had 13 digs in Chestnut Hill’s 3-1 loss to Caldwell College on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-2 loss to the University of the Sciences, Bianchini had 10 digs. In Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Philadelphia University, Bianchini recorded 15 digs to lead the defense.

Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had eight kills in Kutztown’s 3-0 loss to Fairmont State on Saturday. In Kutztown’s 3-2 loss to Millersville on Friday, Stringer had eight blocks to go along with eight kills.
