MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington freshman Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) finished seventh overall at the Messiah College Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 28:15.6 on the 8K course. Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) finished 30th with a time of 30:36.2. The Nittany Lions finished fifth out of seven teams.
Ursinus freshman David Slade (Abington) posted a time of 33:14 at the Jack Saint Clair Memorial Cross Country Championship on Saturday. Ursinus finished 10th in the team standings.
Junior Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) was Penn State’s third runner to cross the finish line at the Greater Louisville Classic last weekend, finishing 72nd overall with a time of 24:56. The Nittany Lions finished 10th as a team.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington team captain Megan O’Farrell (Pennsbury) finished 48th overall with a time of 30:31.4 in the 6K race at the Messiah College Invitational on Saturday.
Ursinus senior Gina Brienza (Central Bucks East) was third on her team with a time of 27:45 on Saturday at the Jack Saint Clair Memorial Cross Country Championship at Belmont Plateau.
Bloomsburg’s Lauren Bond (North Penn) finished fifth overall with a time of 24:33 at the Jack Saint Clair Memorial on Saturday at the Belmont Plateau. The Huskies took home the team title, scoring 25 points.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, in No. 18 Drexel University’s 4-3 win over No. 21 William and Mary on Friday. The Dragons fell behind 3-0 but scored four unanswered goals.
Fleischut earned Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week honors last week for field hockey after scoring the game-winning goal in the 79th minute of play to help Drexel edge No. 15 New Hampshire 3-2 last Sunday. In the win, Fleischut had two goals and an assist. She also scored a goal in Drexel’s 3-1 win over Towson. Fleischut leads the team’s offense with six goals, including two game winners, and five assists for 17 points. She ranks fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association in goals, assists and points.
Sophomore Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) scored an unassisted goal with 14:43 to play to lift La Salle to a 1-0 win over Lock Haven in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams on Saturday. It was Kempf’s fourth goal of the season.
Freshman Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) scored the game-winning goal in Delaware Valley’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over King’s College on Saturday.
Freshman goalie Morgan Brozena (Souderton) stopped all four shots she faced in Washington and Jefferson's 2-0 win over Kenyon on Sunday. The shutout was the second of the season for the rookie goalie, who boasts a 4-2 mark on the season. The win was the fourth in row for Washington and Jefferson.
Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) had a pair of assists to take her career total to 56 in Lebanon Valley’s 6-1 win over Albright on Saturday. Junior Alyssa Tourdot (Wissahickon) scored Albright’s lone goal. In Lebanon Valley’s 8-2 win over Widener, Vasey extended her program record with her 54th career assist to move into a tie for 11th all-time in NCAA Division III history.
Freshman Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) contributed her team-high fifth assist in Villanova’s 2-1 loss to crosstown rival St. Joseph’s University on Wednesday.
Junior Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) scored a pair of goals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 5-0 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday. Senior Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) also scored a goal. In Friday’s 4-3 overtime win over FDU-Florham, Karidas scored a goal and assisted on the overtime winner for her 100th career point. Freshman Katie O’Neill (Norristown) also scored a goal. In Tuesday’s 14-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.), Karidas scored a pair of goals and also had two assists. Gorenflo also had a pair of assists.
Senior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) scored a pair of goals in Rider University’s 8-0 win over Lehigh last Sunday.
Kierstan Ryan (Harry S Truman) scored her first goal of the year in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s 6-2 loss to Utica on Wednesday.
Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) played the entire second half and earned the win in goal in third-ranked IUP’s 3-2 win over Mansfield on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-1 comeback win over Slippery Rock, Varacallo split time in the cage, combining with her teammate for five saves.
Becky Ely (Council Rock North) scored a goal in No. 7 Messiah College’s 6-0 win over Stevenson University on Saturday.
Senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in Scranton University’s 4-0 win over Susquehanna on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 5-0 win over Keystone College, Kempf had a goal and an assist. In last week’s NCAA Division III statistical leaders, Kempf was listed in a tie for 39th in points per game average (2.44) and tied for 40th in goals per game (1.00).
Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) scored her seventh goal of the season, tying her for the team lead, in Quinnipiac’s 2-0 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday.
Samantha Facciolla (Council Rock South) scored a goal in fifth-ranked Bloomsburg’s 3-2 win over top-ranked West Chester on Saturday afternoon.
Coutney Wolff (Pennridge) posted her first goal of the season in top-ranked West Chester’s 5-0 win over Kutztown on Wednesday.
FOOTBALL
Sophomore Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had 51 yards on 14 carries and two catches for 22 yards in Lycoming’s 42-7 win over FDU-Florham on Saturday.
Senior Brandon McManus (North Penn), who had his streak of 59 made PATs snapped in the first quarter, connected on a 50-yard field goal to end the first half of Temple’s 37-28 win over South Florida on Saturday. The field goal gave the Owls a 9-7 edge at intermission. McManus also had seven punts for a 42.9 average with two landing inside the 20.
Kevin Morton (Abington) was 18-of-25 for 221 yards and three touchdowns in Kutztown’s 56-7 win over Cheyney on Saturday. He also established a new school record with his 734th pass completion. Morton, who ran for 25 yards and a TD, ended the game with 751 career completions, surpassing the previous mark of 733. The senior QB now has 9,706 career pass yards and 10,413 career yards of total offense. He also moved into 14th place in Division II history with 105 career touchdown passes. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) had a 17-yard touchdown reception, tying Dom Mele for fifth place at KU with 18 career TD catches. Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) had a tackle for a loss.
Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) had two catches, including a 28-yard touchdown pass, in Bloomsburg’s 38-14 win over Millersville on Saturday. Lou Brown (Upper Dublin) led Millersville’s defense with 10 stops and two pass breakups. Jeff Buchanan (Upper Dublin) had a 27-yard pass reception for the Marauders.
Sophomore cornerback Andrew Coyle (Souderton) came up with an interception on the third play of East Stroudburg’s 35-28 win over West Chester on Saturday.
Junior defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) had a 15-yard sack in the third quarter of Shippensburg’s 36-20 win over LIU Post on Saturday. Junior Mike Goode (Norristown) had four tackles.
JD Dzurko (North Penn) is the starting left guard for the University of Delaware. Saturday’s start against the University of Maine was his sixth consecutive start. A redshirt sophomore, Dzurko also is in the two deep lineup as the backup center. In the first game of the season against West Chester, Dzurko lined up against fellow 2010 co-captain Mike Culbreath (North Penn). In last week’s game against New Hampshire, Dzurko and Jay Colbert (Neshaminy) squared off much of the day. Colbert is the right defensive end for UNH. Also playing for UNH was Souderton’s Cody Mueller (Souderton).
MEN’S GOLF
Philadelphia University’s Ed DiRugeris (Pennsbury) shot an 89 in the Rams’ tri-match with Concorida (N.Y.) and Cabrini on Wednesday. The Rams finished with a score of 334. Concordia and Cabrini were deadlocked for first at 319. In last weekend’s Griffin Invitational, DiRugeris shot an 84 to finish tied for 22nd.
Bucknell sophomore Zach Pogust (Plymouth Whitemarsh) followed up his opening-round 78 to shoot a 76 at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y., on Sept. 23. The Bisons finished fourth as a team, 12 shots behind champion Binghamton.
La Salle junior Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) fired a second-day score of 75 (+3) at the ECAC Championship last Monday, giving him a 36-hole score of 151 (+7) and placing him fifth out of the 25-player field. Sophomore Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) shot an 81 (+9) for a 36-hole total of 164 (+20) to finish the tournament in a tie for 18th place.
MEN’S SOCCER
Erik Riefenstahl (Wissahickon) was one of four keepers to see action in Elizabethtown’s 6-0 rout of Hood on Wednesday night.
Senior Matt Howard (Abington) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 4-1 win over Lancaster Bible on Monday. Senior Julian Ward (Abington) contributed an assist. With the win, the Nittany Lions improved to 7-0 on the season and remain atop the NEAC standings.
Sean Bonner (North Penn) played a critical role in controlling the midfield, and freshman Jonathan Nazon (North Penn) scored his first collegiate goal in Eastern University’s 5-0 win over Manhattanville on Saturday. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Eastern.
Sophomore Ryan Roedel (Neshaminy) scored his first goal of the season in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 2-2 tie with Cabrini on Wednesday.
Senior keeper Andrew Foran (Council Rock North) saw his first action in a month and made one save in Shippensburg’s 6-1 road victory at Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday.
Anthony Manero (Council Rock North) scored the game winner late in the second half on a penalty kick to give Bloomsburg a 3-2 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.
Jidell Roach (Abington) converted a rebound in the 97th minute to propel La Salle to a 1-0 win over Fordham on Friday night. The play was set up after teammate Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) attempted a shot that was blocked, but Roach was there to pick up the rebound and fired it into the left side of the net for the game’s deciding goal and his first goal of the season.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Stephanie Fischer (Pennsbury) scored her first collegiate goal in Holy Family’s 2-1 loss to Philadelphia University on Wednesday.
Junior goalkeeper Gabrielle Pakhtigian (North Penn) recorded eight saves in La Salle’s 2-1 win over Atlantic 10 foe Richmond on Friday night. Entering this season, Pakhtigian was ranked in the top eight in six statistical categories. Through 11 games, Pakhtigian stands atop the Atlantic 10 leaderboard with four shutouts.
Millersville freshman Megan Kelley (North Penn) scored the equalizer with five minutes to play in regulation, forcing Charleston to settle for a 1-1 tie in Friday’s contest. Jenna Gould (Hatboro-Horsham) tallied the assist on the game-tying goal.
Redshirt senior Tara Murphy (Council Rock South), who started Temple’s 1-0 loss to St. Bonaventure on Friday, stopped both chances that came her way before receiving a red card in the 61st minute for tackling.
Sophomore midfielder Alexis Haug (Central Bucks West) scored on a rebound in Ursinus College’s 1-1 tie with Haverford on Wednesday.

Alicia Roberts (Upper Moreland) scored both of her team’s goals in Wilkes University’s 2-0 win over FDU-Florham on Saturday.
Junior Michelle Pool (North Penn) scored a goal in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 6-0 win over Valley Forge Christian College on Thursday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Junior Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) notched her 100th career win in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 9-0 CSAC win over Baptist Bible on Saturday. Fein is now 53-4 at singles and 48-3 in doubles for her career.
Fein was named the CSAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1. In the preceding week, Fein went 4-0 in singles play, including a 3-0 stint to capture the #1 flight championship at the Goucher College Open, a title she has won for the third year in a row. She also swept singles and doubles against Cedar Crest to keep the Griffins perfect in conference play. On the season, she is a perfect 12-0 at singles and 9-0 in doubles for Gwynedd-Mercy.
Gabriela Durand (Council Rock North) was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-1 win in West Chester’s 7-2 win over Clarion University on Friday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) recorded 41 assists in Cabrini’s 3-1 win over Cairn University on Saturday. The win was the 11th in a row for the Cavaliers. In Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Wednesday, Koenig made her impact felt from the service line, serving for the final nine points of the second set. The freshman setter finished the match with 31 assists.
Abbie Keating (Neshaminy) had a team high 12 kills in Cairn’s 3-0 loss to Cabrini on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Marywood, Keating had 13 digs.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) led the offense with 15 kills and four blocks in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-2 loss to Haverford on Saturday. In F&M’s 3-2 loss to Richard Stockton later in the day, Harvey had 14 kills and six blocks. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Johns Hopkins, Harvey had 11 kills and four blocks.
Kate Schalck (William Tennent) had five kills while teammate Leah Brown (William Tennent) recorded a double-double with 15 assists and 15 digs in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 loss to Lancaster Bible on Saturday. In the Lady Lions 3-0 loss to Penn State Berks later in the day, Brown recorded her third consecutive double-double of the weekend and her 11th of the season, recording 17 assists and 15 digs. In Penn State Abington’s split with Gallaudet University and Penn State Harrisburg, Brown contributed 18 digs, 40 assists and four aces in the two matches combined. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Montgomery on Wednesday, Brown posted 35 assists while Schalk posted a game high seven solo blocks.
Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) had 10 kills in Lebanon Valley’s 3-1 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday in the Middle Atlantic Conference Crossover Tournament. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Elizabethtown, Godfrey contributed a seven-point serving run in the third set.
Senior outside hitter JeanAnne Carey (Pennsbury) had 11 digs in Moravian’s 3-1 win over Gettysburg on Saturday. In Moravian’s 3-1 win over Swarthmore, junior middle blocker Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) had five kills and two blocks.
Mara Berzins (Pennridge) had six kills in Ursinus College’s 3-0 win over Hood on Saturday.
