In August, the Titans sat down as a team and outlined their five goals for the season.
On that list was earning a league championship for the first time in school history.
Thanks to Tuesday’s victory over the Indians, the Titans clinched the Continental Conference crown, and they can now check that goal off their list. However, South wasn’t the only team that had something to fight for on Tuesday. The Indians were hoping that they could upset the Titans and put themselves in the running to potentially set up a four-way tie for the conference crown along with North Penn and CB East. With so much at stake for both teams, it was no surprise that everyone played with intensity for the entire 80 minutes.
The Indians had some chances to get on the scoreboard, most notably midway through the first half when they were awarded a penalty kick. Titans’ keeper Matt Weigner made the big stop on the kick only to hear the whistle and see the referees reset the kick because he moved before the shot. The Titans’ sideline was tense as the Indians set up for a second chance at their penalty kick, but Weigner turned that attempt away as well.
The game was back and forth for much of the time, but the Titans began to take control in the second half. Still, neither team could find the net, and overtime was looming. Finally, in the 76th minute, Pat Berneski had the opportunity to take a penalty kick, and he cranked it past the Indians’ keeper for the game-winner. Weigner earned his 10th shutout of the season.
The title is the first in coach Don Brady’s nine seasons at the helm, although six of those seasons ended in postseason play. According to the Titans’ coach, the players want to revisit states after a disappointing loss to Conestoga last year in the quarterfinals.
Brady, however, didn’t leave the season up to luck and skill. He focused on instilling self-belief and being positive throughout the season. At various points in the season, the team would sit down and discuss how they could make their season better. Brady recalled when, earlier in the season, one of his players received a red card, which did not fit with his philosophy for the Titans, so the players discussed how they would focus on the things they had the power to change. Brady encouraged them not to get hung up on the way the referees are calling a game or the way the other team is playing. Rather, he reminded the players to concentrate on things they could control like their tempers, their play and their level of intensity.
It’s been a long journey since the early days when Brady recalls the team not even having a building to call home as South was still under construction when the Titans’ first season got underway. The Titans hope their lessons of self-belief will help them check off another one of their preseason goals - advancing to the state playoffs.
