MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington freshman Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) finished in first place overall to claim the individual crown at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships, posting a time of 29:05. His time shaved 10 seconds off the course record.
Ursinus College junior CJ Wacker (Plymouth Whitemarsh) posted a time of 28:57.3 and finished in 79th place at the 2012 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. Ursinus finished ninth as a team.
Widener senior Ryan Gallagher (Neshaminy) earned first team all-conference honors after finishing third at the 2012 MAC Championships on Saturday, posting a time of 27:04.19 at a pace of 3:23 per kilometer. Widener finished third as a team.
Penn State junior Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished 37th with a time of 24:39 at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday. Sophomore Chris Campbell (Council Rock North) ) finished 49th overall with a time of 24:54. The Nittany Lions finished sixth as a team.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown’s Ashley Underkoffler (Central Bucks South) finished 29th at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship on Saturday. Elizabethtown captured its sixth consecutive team title.
La Salle’s Anne Areias (William Tennent) posted a time of 20:17.0 at the 5K Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championship race at the Belmont Plateau on Saturday.
Shippensburg freshman Gabby Brackett (Bensalem) finished ninth with a time of 24:03 at the Lock Haven 6K on Saturday. The Red Raiders won the team title.
Temple sophomore Chelsea Carleton (Central Bucks South) posted a time of 19:56.6 in Saturday’s Atlantic 10 Conference Cross Country Championships.
Penn State Abington junior Megan O’Farrell (Pennsbury) posted a time of 26:31, taking 34th place at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. The Nittany Lions finished fifth in the 10-team field.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Alyssa Tourdot (Wissahickon) scored twice in a span of 2:22 to carry Albright to a 3-2 win in Saturday’s season finale. Tourdot also added an assist and fell just one shy of the school goal-scoring record. She finished with 26 goals, one short of the mark set in 2005.
Senior Taylor McGarvey (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed an assist in Cabrini’s 5-2 win over Immaculata on Wednesday.
Senior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Rider’s 4-2 win over Bryant last Sunday.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute junior Kiersten Ryan (Harry S Truman) was named to the 2012 Liberty League Fall All-Academic Team. Student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 to be selected.
Maura Hennigan (Central Bucks West) scored a pair of unassisted goals within a seven-minute span early in the second half of Franklin & Marshall’s 3-2 overtime win over Dickinson on Saturday.
Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) saved a penalty stroke with no time on the clock in IUP’s 1-0 win over Slippery Rock in a quarterfinal game of the PSAC Field Hockey Tournament. In last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Slippery Rock, Casey McGowan (Central Bucks South) scored the game-winning goal with just over three minutes to play. Varacallo played the entire second half in goal and had one save.
Senior forward Gretchen Kempf (Central Bucks South) had a goal and two assists in the University of Scranton’s 3-0 win over Vassar College on Tuesday.
Freshman Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) tied a single-game high of five points with one goal and three assists in Villanova’s 5-3 win over Georgetown. In Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Penn, Kenney contributed an assist and now leads the team in assists with six.
Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) recorded an assist in Quinnipiac’s 5-0 win over Siena on Friday.
Junior Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in No. 5 Penn State’s 6-1 win over Michigan State on Saturday. For the first time since 2008, the Nittany Lions have clinched at least a share of the Big 10 regular season title. The Nittany Lions ended the 2012 regular season with a 15-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the Big Ten.
Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) earned her 12th victory and was credited with four saves in No. 2 Princeton’s 2-1 win over No. 7 Virginia on Sunday. In Saturday’s 5-0 win over Cornell, Maida recorded three saves.
Taylor Prichett was named Delaware Valley's Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 15. Prichett scored the game-winning goal with 1:21 remaining in Del Val's 3-2 win over Manhattansville College that clinched a Freedom Division playoff berth for the Aggies. The freshman also assisted on an earlier goal in the game.
Sophomore forward Jessie Accurso (Central Bucks South) scored an unassisted goal in Yale’s 6-1 loss to No. 23 Albany last Sunday.
Senior captain Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) scored a goal during corner play in No. 23 Drexel’s 3-1 win over Hofstra on Sunday. Fleischut leads the team with 10 goals – including three game winners, six assists and 24 points.
Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) scored her ninth goal of the season early in the second half of La Salle’s 3-1 loss to #16 Richmond on Sunday. Her nine goals are the most since senior Becca Chylack (Souderton) had 11 in 2009. Shoemaker finished the season with 19 points, which ranks 11th on La Salle’s single-season list. In Friday’s 4-3 win at Saint Louis, Shoemaker and Chylack both scored goals.
FOOTBALL
Linebacker Dave Damirgian (Council Rock South) had five tackles and two pass breakups in Monmouth’s 28-27 win over Duquesne on Saturday.
Shawn Leo (Souderton) connected on his school record 30th field goal in West Chester’s 59-14 win over Cheyney on Saturday.
Pete Panichi (Upper Merion) had 38 yards in Lebanon Valley’s 31-10 loss to Delaware Valley on Saturday.
Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) caught a 52-yard touchdown pass in fourth-ranked Bloomsburg’s 49-42 loss to 10th-ranked Shippensburg.
Senior fullback Teddy Conrad (Central Bucks West) ran for a touchdown in Ursinus College’s 35-17 loss to 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday. Senior tight end Joe Hoy (Central Bucks East) had three catches for 24 yards, and sophomore wide receiver Josh Williams (Central Bucks South) contributed four catches for 52 yards. Freshman kicker Eric Boyer (Upper Dublin) kicked a 23-yard field goal and was two-for-two on extra points. Senior punter Derek Giannetti (Upper Dublin) had four punts for 160 yards, and junior linebacker Kevin James (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed five tackles.
Sophomore John Sibel (Pennsbury) caught four passes for a career-high 81 yards to lead Lycoming to a 38-7 win over Wilkes. Teammate Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had 78 yards on 21 carries, which included one touchdown.
Kutztown’s Kevin Morton (Abington) was named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week after setting the school record for passing yards for the second straight week as KU picked up a 59-33 win over East Stroudsburg. Morton threw for 490 yards and three scores. He completed 35-of-42 passes (86 percent) without any interceptions. Three of his receivers topped 100 yards in the contest. Morton ended the game with 111 touchdown passes, 10,675 passing yards and 11,354 yards of total offense. He is third all-time in the PSAC in passing yardage. His total offense is now third all time in the PSAC. Morton’s 111 TD passes are tied for ninth in Division II history while his 10,675 passing yards is tied for 16th and his 11,354 total yards are 14th. It is the second time this season that Morton has won at least a share of the PSAC weekly honor.
In Kutztown’s 59-3 win over Millersville on Saturday, Morton threw for 344 yards and three touchdowns on 21-of-26 passing. It was Morton’s sixth 300-yard game of the year. He extended his career records to 852 completions, 11,019 passing yards, 114 touchdown passes and 11,696 yards of total offense. He ranks tied for seventh in Division II history in touchdown passes, 17th in total offense and 16th in passing yards. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) had a 10-yard touchdown run. Myron Miles (Wissahickon) led the Marauders with 74 yards rushing on 15 carries.
GOLF
Penn State Abington sophomore Bobby Crawford (Council Rock North) shot a four over par 76 at the Whitford Country Club on Monday to lead the Nittany Lions to a 322 and a tie for second place in the 13-team tournament hosted by Immaculata College. Crawford started three over on the front nine before finishing with a one-over-par back nine to close out his round. His score of 76 was good enough to tie two other players for first place in the tournament, but the tie was won in a playoff by SUNY Delhi’s Chris Braim. Sophomore Dylan Amin (Neshaminy) shot a 78, good enough for sixth place alone in the tournament. Senior Tim Anderson (Hatboro-Horsham) finished tied for ninth, shooting an even 80.
Temple sophomore Matthew Crescenzo (Cheltenham), who shot an even-par 71 to tie for the overall lead after last Sunday’s first round, carded a six-over 77 on Monday to finish the 2012 Barnabas Health Intercollegiate with a 148 and tied for ninth. The Owls finished third.
West Chester’s Erik Slawter (Upper Merion) placed 17th overall with a 154 at the 2012 PSAC Championships, shooting a 79 in the second round Sunday after shooting a 75 on Saturday. West Chester placed third as a team.
MEN’S SOCCER
Senior Julian Ward (Abington) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 win over Gallaudet on Wednesday. In Monday’s 2-1 loss to Eastern University, senior Matt Howard (Abington) scored the Nittany Lions’ lone goal.
Christian Benner (Souderton) scored a goal in West Chester’s 3-2 overtime win over Millersville on Saturday.
Senior goalkeeper Andrew Foran (Council Rock North) had four saves in Shippensburg’s 2-0 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 2-1 OT win over NYIT, Foran made four saves in 49 minutes of work.
Jidell Roach (Abington) contributed an assist in La Salle’s 1-1 tie with Saint Joseph’s on Friday.
Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) scored his 10th goal of the season in Bloomsburg’s 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday night. Miguel Diaz (Central Bucks East) contributed an assist, and Matt Zima (Council Rock North) scored an unassisted goal. In Thursday’s 4-1 win over Goldey-Beacom College, Miller led the Huskies with his third multi-goal game of the season, contributing two goals. Zima was credited for his role on defense that allowed the Huskies to control the ball on the back line while breaking up most of the Lightning’s attacks.

Redshirt senior Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) closed out her career by turning away 10 shots in the final 65 minutes of Temple’s 0-0 tie with La Salle on Sunday. Her career save total is 227, which is fourth most in program history. Murphy finished the season with 82 saves, which gave her a new career high. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Fordham, Murphy tied her season high in saves with 12.
Keeper Gabby Pakhtigian (North Penn) recorded five saves on the way to her eighth shutout of the season in La Salle’s 0-0 tie with Temple on Sunday. The North Penn grad is second in the single-season category all-time.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) recorded nine saves in Penn State Abington’s 4-1 loss to Ursinus College on Thursday. In Wednesday’s 6-1 win over Gallaudet, freshman Nicole Kidd (Abington) scored a pair of goals.
Cait Mitchell (Central Bucks South) was part of the defensive unit that recorded its eighth shutout of the season in Eastern University’s 0-0 tie against Salisbury on Tuesday.
Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) contributed an assist on the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute of Elizabethtown’s 1-0 double overtime win at Widener on Saturday. The win propelled Elizabethtown into the Commonwealth Conference playoffs. In Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Lycoming, Cerankowski scored her sixth goal of the season. Teammate Amanda Fisher (Abington) contributed an assist.
Brooke Edwards (Harry S Truman) contributed her third assist of the season on the game-winning goal in Wilkes University’s 1-0 win over King’s College on Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) tied a career high with 47 assists in Cabrini College’s 3-1 loss to No. 21 Eastern University on Friday. In Thursday’s 3-0 sweep of Cedar Crest College, Koenig served up 36 assists.
Abbie Keating (Neshaminy) had 14 kills and 27 digs to lead Cairns University to a 3-2 win over Kean University on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 3-0 sweep of Cedar Crest, Keating had a career-high 19 kills to go along with two assists and nine digs.
Setter Leah Brown (William Tennent) contributed 35 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-2 win over Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday. In last Saturday’s North Eastern Athletic Conference Crossover Tournament, Brown recorded 39 out 116 assists on the weekend.
Sarah Godfrey (William Tennetn) had nine kills in Lebanon Valley’s 3-0 loss to Gallaudet on Saturday.
Sophomore outside hitter Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) recorded her team leading ninth double-double of the season with a 13-kill, 13-dig effort in the University of Connecticut’s 3-2 win over Seton Hall on Sunday. In last Sunday’s 3-1 win at Pittsburgh, Maugle posted a match high 17 kills and 17 digs.
Junior middle blocker Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) had four kills and two blocks in Moravian’s 3-0 win over Lynchburg College on Saturday. Senior outside hitter JeanAnne Carey (Pennsbury) had three kills and three service aces. In Friday’s 3-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan, O’Hara had four kills and two blocks while Carey had eight digs and a pair of service aces. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Muhlenberg, Carey totaled eight digs, four kills and two aces while O’Hara had three blocks and four kills.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had a team high 14 kills in Kutztown’s 3-2 loss to Millersville on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to Shippensburg, Stringer had six kills.
